How do you store your DVDs? Not Blu-Rays, but DVDs.

DrezDrez Registered User regular
I'm thinking of storing them at the local landfill. I'm curious what everyone's opinions are on outdated media that weigh a lot and take up space and that you will almost definitely never want to watch again and also have no patience or desire to sell or give or bequeath or donate to anyone at all ever?

HBOMax has made us reconsider getting rid of physical media.

We’ve moved the majority of ours to DVD/CD books

  • DrezDrez Registered User regular
I think step one will be to remove the discs from boxes.

I really have to decide then if I want to keep them at all.

Have you looked into a NAS / media streaming server? DVDs are a lot smaller than Blu-rays, so they won't take up that much room, and then you can donate them or sell them to local media stores.

Your local public library may also accept donations.

Yeah, I dunno. Maybe. Mulling it over.

    Will think about that.

So I just moved to a really small town and didn't really think about that. I'll see if they accept donations like that. Thanks!

I mostly see large cardboard boxes of them on random street corners when walking my dog. Seems like a popular storage solution

Yeah, even if they don't put them into their collection, they might have something like a Friends of the Library group that periodically puts on sales where they sell the stuff donated to them to raise money for library stuff. Mine just had a massive sale and I actually picked up seasons 1-4 of The Office on DVD for $1.50 each.

Second the media server idea. There are a bunch of options out there to rip DVDs and Blurays you own. I personally am a big fan of Plex, and my wife and I buy any new movies we want to watch and just copy them straight to the server. You can then stream it to any of your tvs or mobile devices, pretty slick. You don’t need a high dollar machine to do this, I picked up a $200 used workstation years ago and it’s still trucking along just fine.

Blurays especially are generally higher image quality than 1080p or even 4k streaming of something like Netflix or Disney +, but even DVDs are usually decent.

I ripped all of mine onto a Synology server. They physical disks sit on some shelves in the home theater room I built in the basement but they mostly just sit there. The kids have an easier time loading them in the Xbox than navigating the media server, so that's when they get read the most. Having them on the server makes it very easy to download some to tablets for road trips where there's no wifi.

I found it a good workstream to rip a bunch of them and then encode over night in Handbrake, upload to the server and delete all the crap and start over until I'd made it through the collection. Because I'm a packrat I would probably sooner load them into a CD binder and toss the cases than dispose of them but I still buy CDs and rip them to my server, so I admit to being old fashioned.

Honestly, don't get rid of them. The last month has shown how fragile all this pop culture is and how easily deleted pop culture and different is.

I'd buy a few CD binders and tuck them into a closet.

Oh hey, I came across this problem during the weekend!

I now store my DVDs in the dumpster down in the garbage room.

I saw that someone beat me to it with a big pile of VHS tapes.

If you honestly believe you would never want to watch them again in any capacity I would just ditch them. You'll have a hard time finding a place that would recycle them, so if you want to be green I would suggest donating them to a second hand store.

If you have any that you may want to watch again in the future, make a digital backup and store it on a spare hard drive. No need to invest in a NAS right away, but could be a fun future project. Personally I still keep the physical discs as well, just in case of future hard drive failure. They are packed away in Rubbermaid totes in the basement.

Finally, you could find alternative uses for the discs. True story I once used an Ace Ventura DVD as a solar filter for taking pictures of sunspots. Not ideal but it worked in a pinch.

I have a couple tubs of them in the basement. I can't bring myself to get rid of them, because they are almost entirely full seasons of cartoons.

Others have suggested donating to libraries or thrift stores. You could also sell them to a local used media stores which would be a few bucks extra towards your streaming subscription fees.
Compared to VHS, DVDs still have decent picture/sound quality and to throw them out is truly wasteful.

    (Warning: Rant below!)

It really annoys the hell out of me some people are such mindless consumers that they won't bother to save their books, music, films or games. There seemingly isn't a desire to appreciate the art or talent involved in the creation of these entertainments when it gets in the way of the next thing. Are we so goddamned decadent that we will throw away our physical media? There is a glut of entertainments where the business model is clearly focused on the next new thing. But I say we should take a step back and appreciate what we already have from the media we enjoyed. You won't have to keep paying to have access to content that shuffles around in quality, price and availability on the whims of some rights holder.

I agree, but a big move will make you rethink a lot of the things in your life. Particularly if you're downsizing.

I run Plex on a Raspberry Pi, so you can get away with very little! It can only do one stream at a time, but I haven't run into any streaming issues, even with my ripped blu rays at full quality.

I found some CD/DVD holders on Amazon that look like old books; so I ordered a couple of those and went through a giant bin and uncased everything - and threw all the plastic cases in the recycle. So now they look decorative on a bookshelf, are easy to get to if needed, and easy to transport.

I also support the donation to the library idea. When I worked at a library, DVDs and CDs were great for movies vs VHS (which we carried as well) since after they got scratched up like someone used them to surf down a gravel road, we could just put them in our resurfacing machine and restore them to brand new. I think we could do that about 50 times before they became a plastic wafer.

These are now in my possession and they are awesome. Really sturdy. The frame feels very strong and the faux leather covers look great.

You can fit a ton of discs in each one. Right now I have one for games going back as far as PS1 and the other is DVDs / Blu Rays.

I was able to collapse all my collection into these except for the cool box sets I want to display.

The only problem I have is I bought some extra sleeves but they don't fit. You have to get the specific brand appropriate ones which is annoying.

But on the shelf they look tasteful and more importantly don't look like a stack of discs.

I still buy my music on CD, and some on vinyl as well, however the CD music I just rip to my server and then store the CD itself in boxes - the plan is to one day scan all the covers for easy access, but I can not see myself getting rid of the physical media.

Sometimes the CD's also include a DVD which I then rip and put on the server as well, however there is one DVD that for some reason I am having trouble with so I'm curious - what tool do you guys recommend for the job?

The DVD in question is one with a concert that came with the Prince - 1999 remaster box, it is a 5 CD + the DVD and if you like Prince I highly recommend it. The DVD is a simple one, no menu or anything just a concert video and playing it is fine, but ripping it it results in a video where the audio is missing from the last half of so.

I actually bought a second set of these things because I apparently have way too many discs.

They're cheaper on the Bellagio Italia website directly than through Amazon. The insert pages in particular are $5 cheaper.
