I stopped playing the game because of some terrible camera problems. There's a level where you need to climb up the back of a ferris wheel or something, and the camera just refused to go into any steady position that would actually help the level. I got so frustrated that I turned the game off and never played it again.
That's the only part of the game I ever had any trouble with the camera.
Same here. Well, at least up until that part. But it just frustrated the hell right out of me. The camera angle would change midjump and I'd be fucked.
Wow. I stopped here as well. I remember spending almost 45 minutes trying to figure out how exactly I needed to move the stick to keep mario moving in the right direction while jumping. Then I realized what I was doing and put the game away forever.
Wha-what? People complained about this game being too hard? I rented the game and was able to get every shine presented in the levels (not all the extras stars though). I'm guessing some of the bonus stars must be super difficult.
This is one my least favorite Mario games because I thought the water pack made the game too easy. Being able to float via the jet back made much of the platforming less challenging.
The parts of the game where they take the jet back away are my favorite. It is just a giant platforming orgasim.

But I got past that level, and all was well with the world. I only got 80 shines or whatever, enough to "beat" the game, but not 100% it.
And yes, the special stages rocked. The FLUDD was fun, too.
sunshine is stupid if not just for the fact that like half of the 120 shines arent mission based and just a giant waste of time to get
you get absolutely dick for all 120 shines too
Just like in Super Mario 64 and every game where you have extra optional shit to collect.
No.
In SM64, you got up on the roof and Yoshi and the star-y jump for collecting all 120 stars.
and the majority by far were mission based. not collecting coins of 3 types like sunshine for 5 more shines per level
and it was the first game of this sort, so it was exempt from any bullshit collect-a-thon criticism unlike pretty much every 3D platformer that followed (DK64 I hate you)
In SM64, you got up on the roof and Yoshi and the star-y jump for collecting all 120 stars.
I am sure that is worth having to go through hell to get all of the damn stars. Yoshi's dialogue isn't even translated properly.
Going through hell? Dude were your thumbs broke?
You missed the point. At least it was SOMETHING.
And you'd already be decently close to getting them all as playing the game as it was designed would result in you having MOST of the stars.
In shine just playing as expected I found myself suddenly having beaten the game, 59 stars from "completion". So I look up what I would get if I got all these non-mission based out of the way ones... a whole bunch of nothing!
Who the hell wants to bother with that? Poor game design.
A cool thing I like about mario 64 was that you could pretty much get the stars in any order you wanted to. Not so much in sunshine.
Also, I thought sunshines graphics were awesome. Just the way everything look just fit right. I really wished the environments were more varied though, which is what made the other marios amazing.

You got a slightly different ending in Sunshine. What makes you think that they intended for the average person to get all of the stars? There is no reason to feel the need to get all of the stars. It is mostly there for the completionists who want an extra challenge.

many people seem to think it's changed. The only difference is at the very

I liked Sunshine a lot. My two main beefs with it:
1.) FLUDD. Specifically, its platforming applications. I felt like it was a handicap, and that the ease with which you could just hover across every gap was a band-aid fix for the precision issues of the Mario 64 platforming model. Not to say that Sunshine was easy, because the level design was a real bitch a lot of the time, but the game forces you to rely too much on your hoverpack instead of raw platforming skillz. I think it's more fun when Mario's movements are more fluid(ha ha), sort of like SMB1 is more fun when you charge through at full speed. I had a great time on the special levels because of that.
2.) The setting. The tropical paradise setting is nice for a level or two, but there's not enough variety. Mario Galaxy should be good for this since pretty much everything falls under the "planets" umbrella.
In SM64, you got up on the roof and Yoshi and the star-y jump for collecting all 120 stars.

The best reward ever in a game for collecting everything was in Sonic Adventure 2. Awful game - I hated it, but god damn was collecting everything totally 100% worth it. If Sonic 360 had the same kind of reward, I'd gladly beat it with a 100% completion rating.
Erased my rant. I'll just say, I really love Mario Sunshine. Not a huge fan of FLUD or Yoshi, but the controls are tight as hell. The move set is perfect. Its one of those games that you endure its few short comings just to play through the extra levels.

If you got between 50 and 118 Shine Sprites, you'll be presented with
a scene where El Piantissimo finds the magic brush.
If you got 119 Shine Sprites, you'll be presented with a scene of every
character is in front of the curtain in the casino at sirena beach, and
at the bottom of the screen, there is text saying "Have a great vacation!"
I've seen come complaints about Sunshine and I just want to say that 64 had the same exact issues. It's just the nature of the beast. One of the things that assists in the games difficulty.
I enjoyed sunshine because I didn't WANT another 64. I wanted the same platform system with something new. Well, I got it. I enjoyed it.
While I loved the retro platforming levels in sunshine, some of them were SO DAMNED HARD THAT I NEARLY BLEW A GASKET. AARRRRGGHHH!!! I never bothered getting all 120 shines in the game....It just wasn't as fun to me as Mario 64 was. But then again, Mario 64 came out right when I was exiting Junior High. Sunshine was when I was in College. I was a different person, and I had less time to play.
But still, it's a great game. I still have the beach towel I got for pre-ordering it at Toys "Backwards R" Us, too.
Also, I can't believe no one has said it:

You know despite their insanely hard bits.
The old school levels were by far the most fun part of the game. I'd spend hours on them swearing and whatnot having a ball.
I played through Mario Sunshine first, as I didn't have an N64. I played a bit of Mario 64DS, but pretty much my first real experience with the title is with the copy in the VC. With that said, I definately prefer Sunshine.
To me, the N64 levels having no connection to each other is a weakness - I liked having a theme run through Mario Sunshine. I'm not crazy over the random paintings as worlds - give me an overworld or some type of reason that I'm going from snow to the desert.
I also like the introduction of FLUDD. I thought the water squirting was really well done and addressed the fact that Mario's traditional attacks (fireballs and buttbumping) become much less effective in 3D. The water gun helped with that. Trying to jump on enemies in Mario 64 is far more of a crap shoot than it should be.
The real thing that pushes Sunshine ahead in my mind is just that overall, I had a ton of fun throughout. It never felt like a chore to play through levels - it was like a funhouse with something different and creative in each level. Mario 64 is actually slightly dull to me - alot of the stuff that was likely groundbreaking at the time is now pretty standard stuff and it leaves me wishing for more.
I loved Sunshine's controls (with and without pack) more than anything else. The easier "skid-flip" and wall jumps made climbing buildings a dream. And the missions were cool and funny (Cleaning an eel's teeth? Boo hotel? Sand-freaking-bird?). Some great bosses, too. Just not the final one.
I'm also of the opinion that the water is some of the most gorgeous ever rendered. It just looks real, almost out-of-place real.

Sunshine has the best controls of any 3D game, period. I love that game so much.
There are two parts I don't like:
The platforming section behind the roller coaster (this one was mentioned) and
The part where you have to go down the pipe to get up to the top of a wall to jump over to a fruit machine and hit the fruit machine over and over until you get the proper fruit (sometimes like 20 times) and then KICK the fruit over to a Yoshi just so you can spit juice (you barely have enough) at jumping Cheep Cheeps to make platforms that only stay platforms for like 5 seconds to get across to a star but if you fall off of the platforms or run out of juice you have to start the entire process over again omg.
I wish people wouldn't complain so much about the difficulty, because that's why Nintendo makes no hard games anymore.
Also, thank you for making this thread.
Anyone in the entire human race who thinks Sunshine was difficult is either retarded or has no hands. Seriously, probably the easiest mario game to date, well tied with Mario DS.
Maybe not the easiest, but there's one thing Sunshine wasn't, and it's "too hard". Sure, it was hard, but it was CHALLENGING hard, not omfg-this-is-frustrating-I'm-not-having-fun hard.
People complain about the difficulty? No way, 64 was harder. I don't even know what the fuck I'm doing for the last 25 stars in that one. I don't recall that being a huge problem in Sunshine.

I always have, and always will view SMS as an expansion to Mario64.
There just wasn't enough of a variation, even with FLUDD, that made the game worthy of its own.
I love both Mario64 and SMS equally, they both have pros and cons, but the games are just so similar, its hard to discredit one without the other.
I've never found either of the 3D Marios to be particuarly close to the originals in gameplay or content, but I've got to say, those no-waterpack stages were damn close.
A comprehensive and refined collection of those stages, perhaps put in the context of worlds, would be the greatest thing ever.
I love Sunshine for the amazing water effects (Which still blow me away to this day) and the first 3D rideable appearance of Yoshi. (Which was damn cute.)
Remember that mission where you had to pull the tentacles off a screaming squid?
Yeah, that made me fairly uncomfortable.
For me, that marks the point at which I realized that they could do literally anything in the Mario series as long as they did it in a cute way. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mario use a cute saw with a smiley face on it to cut off Bowser's head. It will be OK because the smiley face makes the saw look cute and flowers spurt out of Bowser's head instead of blood.

Add in some classic power ups, and bring back the growing/shrinking element. Bam. Mario 3D.
I think I must suck at 3D because I have no idea where you people are coming from with the love of the non-fludd sections of the game. They drove me crazy and I found them way to hard, they practically ruined the game for me. Mario Bros. 3 and Lost Levels? Pains in the ass but they are nowhere near as difficult for me and they are much more fun.

Metroid Prime-what? a FPS that doesnt play like halo?
I enjoyed sunshine because I didn't WANT another 64. I wanted the same platform system with something new. Well, I got it. I enjoyed it.
Win.
Also Sunshine felt very much, do this specific tast now I prefer '64's way of tool around however you want (to a degree) and find a star.
Sunshine also felt like a chore to find all those damm blue coins, I finished it but I never felt the urge to collect all the shines in it.
Also tick tock clock was inspired. These levels didn't have the same charm as '64.
Though their bouncy rope was fucking awesome.
