We don't even have a title for this one yet but I'm pleasantly surprised with this one.
We still don’t know much about the former Uncharted writer’s latest project other than that it’s set in World War II and will likely feature a mix of grim battlefields and stealth espionage. A stylish trailer sporting old-timey music shows a few clues about what the game’s story might be about, and ends with a quick glimpse of the King of Wakanda himself:

The camera pans over a reference to Hydra, Marvel’s generation-spanning paramilitary terrorist organization, and eventually settles on an image of Black Panther and Captain America. The first is flanked by a soldier and the Eiffel Tower, while the second is next to a Wakandan warrior and a seeming image of that nation’s capital. So far, though, we still don’t know the game’s official title or a projected release date.

    Characters revealed:
a later press release revealed to be a young Steve Rogers; Azzuri, T’challa’s grandfather and the previous Black Panther; Gabriel Jones, a soldier; and Nanali, a Wakandan spy.

    More deets
The World War II setting was picked because it was a formative era for Steve Rogers, something they thought might be fun to cross over with Black Panther. Nanali, meanwhile, is a character who only appears briefly in the comics, but that’s exactly why Skydance picked her. It sounds like they’re going to take it as an opportunity to flesh out the fledgling spy’s background. Gabriel, they emphasized, would explore what it meant to be a Black man during this Nazi-meets-Hydra era, and what it might feel like for him to interact with Wakanda. As they put it, Skydance wants to explore the idea of four unlikely heroes—two of whom are superheroes, two of whom aren’t—all brought together by global conflict.

Hennig spent a long time talking about the studio’s desire to make the game approachable to everyone, to the degree that they consider it one of the four major pillars of the overall project. “We’ve got this franchise and this IP, that is universally loved, but we’re gonna put it behind this sort of walled garden where if you can’t hang, if you can’t get good, then it’s not for you?” she posed, trying to point out the absurdity of that hypothetical scenario. “We want everybody to feel like they can experience this,” she clarified. “They can put themselves in the shoes of these heroes, the controls are simple, contextual, intuitive, but also deep—for longtime gamers and people who have never touched a game before.”

It’s structured like a tv series—which they described as being a bingeable, serialized adventure. To achieve that vision, Skydance sought to put together a team of creatives with diverse experiences across media, such as TV, film, comics, and games. Fun fact: One of those includes former Kotaku writer and forever GOAT Evan Narcisse, who has also worked on some Black Panther comics. Hennig likened the group to the “Avengers” of people who tell stories. While Skydance aims to have a story-driven game, they want to make something that gives the player “second-to-second agency.”

While the game will take inspiration from go-to sources, like action-adventure games, it’s also pulling from pretty much everywhere. Hennig mentioned rhythm games, VR experiences, and mobile games, though it’ll likely be a while before we know how these things come into play. To cap this off, she reiterated her larger point about making sure anybody and everyone could pick up the game without studying a manual or memorizing combos.

Eh, I'd hope for something with more actual gameplay and less linear-game-design-disguised-as-platforming in between bouts of strongly mediocre and shallow 3rd-person gunfights. "Serialized adventure" makes a little worried as that sounds like "episodic content", which has only actually worked out for a small handful of games and is a sure way to turn of my interest until years down the road when the game is actually completed.

I'll also be surprised if Wolverine doesn't show up and they're just hiding it.

Meh. That's like... 90% movie scenes with pseudo-QTE to give the illusion of gameplay; the game is all but playing itself, even if it looks reasonably pretty. If I wanted to watch a Captain America movie set during WWII, well, I'd watch the actual Captain America movie set during WWII.

Something like the surprisingly awesome Wolverine game would a hundred times better. Skill and power progression to give you increasingly better tools of kicking ass, enough fun little collectibles to be interesting but not annoying, combat that is actually combat instead of rides, and plenty of space in the gameplay to give the characters room to express their style.

In particular, I've wanted for ages to have a Captain America game where you actually get to the awesome impossible shield shit Cap does all the time, with enough of a skill aspect to feel rewarding and allow for bonkers shit but smooth enough that you don't feel like a klutz fucking everything up.

I mean, Insomniac is making a Wolverine game already so I have faith they'll do a good job. And I quite enjoy Uncharted for what it was, even though upon finishing each I have no desire to replay them any time soon (similar to TLoU games)

As someone who just finished playing through UC4 for the first time on the weekend, yeah I'd be very happy if it plays in that kind of style, with more of a focus on stealth for Black Panther and Nanali sections and with Steve and Gabriel gameplay being more of the kicking-the-door-down variety.

And yes, if you'd watched me doing that section of the game it'd look a lot less like a movie scene.

    Shush.

This is the absolutely perfect person to be doing a game like this.

Worth noting Amy Hennig left after Uncharted 3.

She directed her own share of really awesome sequences though.

There are no pseudo QTEs in the entire sequence. You have to actually drive, you can easily fail or make it look good* and while parts of the chase are tightly scripted (notably the ending), it's still quite possible to play it different ways. If it's anything like my clean run I did, you actually do need to practice it a couple of times first because it's actually not easy to get right and you can easily stuff it up.

If you're going to have bad takes on things, at least have given me the indication you've played it first.

*And the reason you can say it looks like a movie scene with pseudo-QTEs is because this person has practiced it and nails it to a god damn T.

I got Uncharted 4 for free with my PS4, so I figured what the heck, I'll get the other Uncharted games as well. Slogged my way through the lot of them and burned out fast on Uncharted 4 when it was more of the same extremely heavily-scripted sequences interspersed with tremendously weak and shallow gunfights. I could all but see the guiderails most of the time because the player is so heavily "nudged" on where to go. I can get why people got enjoyment out of the games, I would just rather a game meant for me to actually play than a game I just sort of... participate in.

But I see now that they have a writer from Uncharted, so I'm not concerned. The only part of the Uncharted games I wouldn't object to being lifted wholesale is the various character interactions and whatnot, so good for the game that have that writer in the mix.

Huh, I had not heard about that. Yeah, after two amazing Spider-Man games I'd imagine they'll make a stellar Wolverine game as well. Combat system for the Spider-Man games could've been a bit better, but it was still really good.

Amy Hennig was the Writer and Creative Director of the first three.

Hennig is the director of the new studio and writer for the game, so chances are her gameplay preferences are going to still be there.

Whatevs. I choose to be unconcerned. If it ends up being another game-on-rails like the Uncharted games, I'll just... not play it.
