I spent the first year of the pandemic playing "All the Yakuzas," as a project of sorts. I then moved on to playing "All the Final Fantasies," and I'm wrapping that up. I was considering what my next Big Project would be, and I briefly considered "All the Metal Gears," but it seems like even getting ACCESS to them would be a huge pain in the ass
@Poorochondriac boy you're telling me, I'd love a way to play 1 (or Twin Snakes) again without having a PlayStation or a GameCube
I guess there is a PC version of 1 on GOG, but 4 was never on anything but the PS3
Edit: 2, 3 and Peace Walker had that handy HD collection on the 360
Finally jumped back into Stray to finish it. Definitely misted up there at the ending. Absolutely loved the whole thing, had the perfect balance of side things to do, but not so many it tired me of the game.

how do you feel about IP theft, specifically from Konami, because there are easily available less than legal means to play ps1 and 2 games on your pc that you should definitely not easily search out due to being a crime
So I've played a good chunk of Freedom Planet 2 so far, and I've got thoughts:
- still just as fast and fun as the original, with more interesting level gimmicks thrown into the mix. a neat feature they've added that's designed to address the old sonic problem of running full tilt into an enemy or obstacle you couldn't see is a camera that automatically zooms way out once you start going really fast, and you can even set how fast you have to be going for it to kick in or if you want it to kick in at all. they've also taken advantage of the functionality by automatically forcing the camera further out when you face the larger bosses
- so the first game was always kind of half platforming focused half combat focused, and they've expanded on the combat half by adding a dedicated parry button. fortunately for folks like me who mainly just want the platforming bits, they've added a bunch of accessibility options, including the ability to just have your character automatically parry if an attack comes at you and your parry is off of cooldown. there's also whole unlockable loadout system of equippable buffs and debuffs, akin to the tonic system from yooka-laylee and the impossible lair, if you want to further customize things
- anyone who was put off by the first game's extensive story will probably bounce off of this one's too, especially since the sequel's narrative very much assumes you've played the first one and mostly know who everyone is. the tone, humor, characterization, and general sensibilities are all still the same, but for what it's worth, everything from the writing to the voice direction to the cutscene animations have been greatly expanded and improved. at the very least, someone clearly hired an editor for the dialog this time. it's staggering the number of actions and situations that have their own bespoke character and environmental animations, both in and out of the gameplay - the sheer amount of sprite work is clearly the primary culprit in the game's long dev time, but it's all truly a treat to behold. FP2 is just so fucking pretty
- speaking of the writing and sprite work, this game's story mode features numerous JRPG-ass towns where you can run around, shop, and just chat with random NPCs. there are a few repeated designs here and there, but by and large they've got a ridiculous amount of unique characters with interesting designs and dialog sprinkled all over the goddamn place. the character designers and animators went absolutely buck wild taking the concept of "furry sci-fantasy china" and just running with it as far as they possibly could
- the music is still very good but I don't know if I like it as much as the first game's? maybe it just needs time to grow on me. it features plenty of remixes of its predecessor's tunes and I honestly don't know if that's helping or hurting my reception to it.
- my first impressions kind of ended up more focused on everything that isn't the gameplay, but that's not because it's bad or disappointing or anything; to be clear I think it's fantastic, but it's also the most "if it ain't broke don't fix it" part of the package. the first game's alchemy of sonic + gunstar heroes + rocket knight still absolutely holds up and a second helping is extremely welcome after so long
TL;DR FP2 is pretty much exactly what you'd want from a sequel: more of the same, but expanded, more polished and better executed.
which is basically the game criticism equivalent of saying that america is a land of contrasts but eh what're ya gonna do

I once started explaining to my wife why I suddenly needed a Sega Saturn, a long dead console which I have owned and sold on 3 separate occasions, because I really wanna play Guardian Heroes again and it’s not so much that she shot it down as it is that the degree to which I sounded like an insane person actually registered in my own head. Like catching a glimpse of yourself in a mirror at the end of a particularly rough week and recoiling at your horrific visage before it registers that yes, you are the monster.

People talking about Ubi open worlds has me staring down the question of do I kick up one of those again. Out of the ones I own Syndicate or Watch Dogs 2 are the ones I liked the most, but I struggle to commit to them.
I mean you should definitely get a Saturn anyway to play some Dragon Force
That’s not the worst idea I’ve heard this week.

I tried out the eyetracker to see what I look at when playing Transformers Devastation but it turns out I mostly just look at the middle of the screen or my enemy and almost never look at other enemies to track their attacks.
I don't know if this is cos I'm using peripheral vision or sound or other cues but it's not what I expected. I feel like I'm seeing way more of the screen when I play, I must just be processing it without directly looking at it.
The eyetracker has very limited support (only really works with a specific set of games, I own a few so I'm trying it out) and also they removed it working with windows eye control (thanks for hiding that info so deeply it basically took a "Hey this doesn't work, I will google search "why doesn't x work with y?", I thought it still did), so I'm going to have to track down some third party programs to get it to work for what I wanted it for (CRPGS, Civ 6, maybe Stellaris, and helping with windows work, to help save my hands).
If none of them work, dunno what I'll do. There's a beta driver I tracked down that will let it work with eye control, but you lose access to the features that work with the games it works on. (You basically have to uninstall all the modern drivers and apps and just run the old beta)
It's great at tracking eyes. Hopefully all these third party things I'm finding now that I'm searching will help. I found one kinda cute one called Precision Eye Mouse, it's not super precise, but I didn't spend a lot of time fine tuning it.

It's been a a long time since I've fired up Peace Walker but I'm fairly sure it's fine single player. Having a friend to co-op with is a heap of fun and usually easier, but it's not out of the question to get through it alone.
A lot of times you might not be able to get a perfect score the first go, but you unlock/rank up to better gear and can go back and destroy the earlier stages at your leisure.

Rawhiiiiiide!
@Poorochondriac boy you're telling me, I'd love a way to play 1 (or Twin Snakes) again without having a PlayStation or a GameCube
I guess there is a PC version of 1 on GOG, but 4 was never on anything but the PS3
Edit: 2, 3 and Peace Walker had that handy HD collection on the 360
Easiest way to do it would be to get a PS3, You can get 1-5 and Peace Walker there. Granted I have no idea how the Ps3 version of Phantom Pain plays
Ah, sorry for the extra notification Pooro.
Steam
Explaining to my wife why I need a new, old console taking up space seems... Daunting. This project might just not be in the cards
So it goes!
how do you feel about IP theft, specifically from Konami, because there are easily available less than legal means to play ps1 and 2 games on your pc that you should definitely not easily search out due to being a crime
- my first impressions kind of ended up more focused on everything that isn't the gameplay, but that's not because it's bad or disappointing or anything; to be clear I think it's fantastic, but it's also the most "if it ain't broke don't fix it" part of the package. the first game's alchemy of sonic + gunstar heroes + rocket knight still absolutely holds up and a second helping is extremely welcome after so long
TL;DR FP2 is pretty much exactly what you'd want from a sequel: more of the same, but expanded, more polished and better executed.
which is basically the game criticism equivalent of saying that america is a land of contrasts but eh what're ya gonna do
Cleaning up old Humble Monthly codes.
I gotta be 100% honest
I been outta that particular game so long that I don't even remember how to play
Aside from "don't do it," of course, of course
You wouldn't download a walking tank equipped with nuclear weapons
yeah it was basically a hacked together piece of code icy did for fun when he was regularly on the forums, and since it wasn't part of the default package it just broke at one of the vanilla updates eventually
Not only can you, it's been on sale recently.
I should note it did not exist at the time, and yes, that has since saved me from my own impulses several times since that day.
Shining Force III, on the other hand…
That’s not the worst idea I’ve heard this week.

Found this dev post in their steam forums:
"Have posted elsewhere about this but the release date was a placeholder that we were unable to update but have had comms with steam about and should be fixed soon.

That's true of literally any game though
