For some reason today a comic book I read once popped into my head. I probably read it back in the early 80's. All I remember:
the possibly main character was a white guy who pulled melee weapons out of a pocket dimension, I think in his cloak. I think he had a black suit with a big orange cloak, but I'm not sure.
there was a big fight against demons in some kind of hell dimension
his wife, a black woman with a short afro, was being held hostage and he and some allies (including a friendly demon? who may have been a hero too) were tying to rescue her
at the end a demon who had been left for dead pulled a sword out of its body and went to stab the hero, the wife blocked it and was killed. Then it turned out that it wasn't really her, it was a drug addict who the villain had grabbed and illusioned to look like the wife. The villain couldn't bring themselves to threaten someone innocent, and considered the "junkie" worthless. I think the hero had possibly been involved with the death of the villain's family?
Google is being surprisingly unhelpful, anyone know what I'm remembering? It was a mainstream comic, so almost certainly DC or Marvel.
And wow, reading a synopsis of that comic issue, the writers must have been on all of the drugs. There is a lot packed in there. https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Defenders_Vol_1_104
