There's an election going on innit

Next week's election week for us Yanks. Figured I'd make a thread about it so it doesn't spill into other discussions as we ramp up to Midterm Doomsday 2022 Edition.

I don't know if this is going to turn out to be a Red Wave like the infamous surge of 2010 (just a bad year all around, not only for electoral politics), but I'm sure it's going to suck.

Currently my state of Washington is looking safely blue a federal level, but there are enough swing districts at the state level such that the two chambers are going probably be closer in balance than they were before. I'm sure this will bode poorly for anyone who isn't a landlord, real estate developer, and/or a hypercapitalistic corporate taint-licker wanting to see meaningful legislation that does anything to address the incredible affordability crisis affecting myself and my fellow citizens.

Great country we got here.

    I dunno, man.

It ain't gonna be good. It either goes full red because voters are dipshits and democrats ain't done shit about shit to give anybody a real reason to be enthusiastic beyond "you don't want those guys back, do you?" or its gonna stay deadlocked right down the middle.

I'm doing what I can to get the result I would like via phone/text banking and canvassing but I'm also generally of the opinion that the average voter's mind is a whirling vortex I can't bear to look at directly much less comprehend so I wouldn't say I'm optimistic.

I live in MA so my I don't think much is gonna change here, but I'll be happy when I stop seeing those dumb "vote no on question 1" ads on TV that play several times in a row

There is some Trump-supporting ding dong running for governor as well, but he's been fucking up so bad on his campaign that I don't think there's much to worry about

I voted today, it was relatively painless

Fully expect Abbott and his cadre of goons to sweep every state wide office again, but hey, maybe I'll actually get surprised for once?

I actually purposefully sign up for political list things once in a while in addition to donating so I used to get a hundred begging emails a day and it's not been that bad after I spent like a while last year unsubscribing to tons of stuff. I expected them to pop back up, but it seems like a lot of the more annoying ones use shared lists that you can eventually extract yourself from.

Early voting turnout in Texas is like well below 2018 numbers so it's not looking too hot down here.

Guess the voter suppression laws are doing their job. For example my (suburban) county is above it's urban counterpart in early voter turnout.

Yeah like, if Democrats gain anything in Texas that's improvement and better than expected, and I don't think GOP sweeps down here is really a doomer thought, just is what it is here.

I had to forcefully unsubscribe from multiple candidates email lists during 2020 (I haven't even donated to anyone since 2012) because the volume was too fuckin much afterwards. I still get emails from candidates I've never heard of (who aren't even running in my state!) at my junk mail G-Mail account. Lucky for me I use different email addresses for different things so it keeps the noise to signal ratio down, but it's still more than a little vexing to have to clear out an inbox every week of the same spammy trash.

Wisely of me, I didn't use my personal phone number back when I donated, opting instead to give them the old front desk phone number when I was employed by my college's AV service. I like to think that they're still spamming those poor student workers every afternoon as they try to get through their shifts without falling asleep in a forgotten corner of the library. On balance I'd say it's even karma points for them spamming me with donation phone calls every year for their stupid Alumni Association.

I already voted, in MN, where I live, so I’m done with that task.

Over the summer I was getting a ton of texts/calls for the R side of the PA primary, probably due to my number still having a PA area code… and some jerk named Michael that put my number in instead of his own.

There's a guy running here that said he served in Afghanistan but maybe possibly didn't but also he said Ohio should cede from the union and was at January 6.

He's up against a woman who's represented this district for like 40 years and has a really good reputation for actually talking to her constituents about local issues.

Honestly not sure if she'll win this time because they've gerrymandered her district like crazy. Folding in 4 rural counties to the west in with Lucas county.

I'm not sure what else is on the ballot though honestly.

I had the most unrelentingly positive interaction I've had phone-banking recently.

They were like "Next Tuesday? Shit! Thank you so much for reminding me! I really just needed someone to call me, I've been so out of it lately and I had honestly forgotten about the election. I'll make sure to bring my husband too! And I should probably volunteer, I can do phone-banking. Wow, thanks again!"

I've gotten good folks before but never one quite so comprehensive.

I'm really anxious about Warnock v Walker in my home state. It's a close race despite Walker having multiple allegations of domestic abuse, violence, and forcing women to have abortions.

I mean, Warnock really hasn't been playing the hardball he needs to, but the larger share of the blame goes to the media's pathologic need to turn everything into a race that's so close oh boy, even if that means downplaying one side's previously-disqualifying fuck-ups and inflating the smallest gaffe on the other.

The new voting machines they're using are so ass and make things take about 5 times as long as the last time I voted.

Every individual selection is it's own page, so you have to tap the arrow to go to the next page, tap to select your candidate, tap again to go to the next page, etc, all on those shitty, unresponsive touch panels that feel like they haven't been calibrated in 5+ years

My precinct is pretty small and didn't have much local stuff so it was "only" 35 pages or so (so 70 touch panel presses), but I can't imagine how shitty it is in cities like Houston or Dallas.

And then after all that nonsense you still have to print out your paper result slip, and then go deposit that slip in a new, different machine. Absolute fucking madness

I will not vote to retain Judges because I feel it's wrong they run for office and politics when they are supposed to be impartial but there is no perfect system for Judges

When I used to live in Cheyenne it was disturbing that for many offices R candidates ran unopposed. It was eye opening to see with my mail in ballot there was two state level offices with Libertarian candidates running unopposed
There was a bunch of state level bond issues ranging from closing loop holes in funding education in the state. public library improvements, senior citizen facility improvements

Personally I do fear if there is even a minor red wave it is a step closer to the purge being real

Most important votes on my ballot are probably mayor of Los Angeles and sheriff for Los Angeles. My options for both are total shit but I'm at least going to try to oust Villaneuva from the sheriff seat.

This thread reminded me to check on my local early voting spot and it was closer than I thought so I voted last night. Not worried about my local races but the fact Zeldin is being given the slightest chance is concerning and I wanted to be sure to do what I could there.

I only had one day off from work, but not only did I forget to use it to vote, I don't know any of the people running. Except for fucking cretins like Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott, so I guess I could have voted for whoever might have run against them. Not that it would matter in this hellstate but c'est la vie
