Berniedoodle question: does tail hair grow back?

21stCentury21stCentury Call me Pixel, or Pix for short![They/Them]Registered User regular
My mom has a berniedoodle (half Bernese mountain dog, half poodle) and her tail has some pretty bad knots. My mom is wondering if cutting them off would lead the hair to grow back or if it’s like one and done?

We have a labradoodle, which is probably close enough, and I've had to trim burrs out of her tail, and the fur there grew back just fine.

Yeah it grows back. I’ve had a couple poodle mixes and whenever they’ve needed shaved during grooming the tail hair comes back. I assume a bernadoodle is the same.

Poodle fur is actually hair, and so yeah, if you trim it it will most likely grow back fine

The danger is with double coated breeds like Aussie Shepherds where the fur will never grow back the same if you cut it (NEVER do this), but most doodles are genetically 90+% poodle

So yeah, regular trims should be a part of your routine for a poodle or poodle off-breed, to prevent matting and tangling

Consider taking them to a groomer if the matts are particularly bad, they'll be able to get them out with as little fuss or pain as possible
