It could maaaaybe be argued that the emperor as he was might had been a net benefit on humanity, but what the imperium turned into after the Horus Heresy could only be called such by sheer weight of what would happen to humanity if they stopped.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

That's what I get from playing this and the NEOCORE WH40K ARPG (where I thought only that Psyker was an Inquisitor - like that was THEIR class and the others were like Space-Paladin, Cyber-GeekSquad and Gunlady). Maybe not Nazi's (obviously) but they clearly aren't the "good guys" (if such even exist in this universe). Like these mutants are clearly bad, but "the Emperor" and his sycophants are obviously not a net-benefit for humanity (there's gotta be Trump/Emperor memes unironically out there).

It honestly sounds like a cool setting, but there's no multimedia on this right (like an animated show or something); feels like it would translate INSANELY well to a genre show in some format (maybe not live-action because that seems like it would be expensive as hell).

The 40k universe though is sufficiently horrible that as bad as the Emperor and his sycophants are they are probably a net benefit. The alternative (the chaos gods, orks, Necrons, Tyranids etc) are much much worse, corrupting technologies are 13 per dozen and no single solar system can stand against the magnitude of the threats faced.

Yes the 40k human empire is nazis

You don't have to explain the lore, they just are theocratic nazis

The whole franchise started out tongue in cheek satire (of british society under Thatcher? Of wargame players?) and over the decades since they switched to playing the satire parts completely straight

I'm enjoying the challenge of darktide so far. Like I enjoyed vermintide, but the balance feels better in darktide for difficulty and like mechanics of switching to melee and ranged plus all the f'ing specials so many specials.

    French aristocrat psyker life!

That's what I went with in the end, in the earlier beta I played the Crazy Beloved one, but that voice would drive me insane eventually.

Yeah I'd seen other people play the crazier person and with the deluded prophet person the french lady sounded more my style.

Plus you know popping heads. I just like how she'll be on about manufacturing or some shit and the ogrin will say "you still talking?"

Also I'm sure I'm the only person but I kind of like how loot is random and not like just given at level ups? it makes getting something feel more meaty and have weight. I will of course hate this later when I'm not getting shit and just having to buy upgrades

Would like to play, but I'm disconnected before I'm halfway to the mission terminal.

The Imperium of Man is in no way racist, all races of men are treated equally, as ammunition to be fired at the enemies of the Emperor.

xeno scum on the other hand...

Look, if you want to sing kumbaya with the Tyranids you're welcome to it, but if you come back with an extra appendage you're getting the bolter.

Actually there's a lot of xeno races that live peacefully within the empire and trade with it.
    Most notably the Techno Monkeys.

sometimes they're smart and do team up/use xenos against other xenos/chaos

I kind of hope we eventually get some DLC that introduces some of the various xenos though, a Dark Eldar level would be rad and fit with the style they're going with IMO

EDIT: although thematically a genestealer cult DLC would make more sense with hive city levels

It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Dark Eldar to use the opportunity of massive instability in a Hive city to pop in for a good ol' fashioned flesh harvest.

Genestealer Cult is also a pretty obvious one to do too if they wanted.

Gameplay wise I think DE would be more unique than the GSC compared to what exists now in terms of enemies.

Though I do remember at least one story (probably many, many more) that had Dark Eldar, Genestealer Cults, Chaos cults/Chaos space marines, Orks and hapless humans all fighting it out in a Hive city. So there is precedent to go all out if they wanted to. Honestly they could do most factions without much issue. The Tau would be a bit harder to justify, but that is par for the course for them. Hell, you can add Imperial factions as enemies without any real fuss.

On the other hand heterochromia is seen as a sign of Chaos corruption and gets you immediately purged.

There are limits, is my point.

FYI if you're getting crashes try just turning off ray tracing completely. I was crashing to desktop last night every mission but after turning off ray tracing I haven't had a single crash since.

So after about ten hours or so of play, I think I'm done with this until private lobbies and/or solo play is a thing. Right now, there's no sense of discovery because communication in your random group is non-existent and people seem to be doing their own thing. There's no time spent where you're able to dig into the finer details of the map to complete the secondary objectives or to be methodical about encounters, it's just run straight through the corridors and aggro every fucking thing on the map. The EXCELLENT gameplay is just ruined by this turn of the century approach to game sessions.

There's also just an absolute ton of mechanics explanations that is missing from this game that honestly blows me away. Like there's no details whatsoever on what some of these traits mean on items or how to know if you're making progress on your build. Games just needs quite a bit of work to bring the core excellence to the surface.

I recommend anyone with an nvidia card that's not a 40xx series, and feeling the game is not running too well, drop back to pre-40xx drivers 517.48.

Also starting to get that look going.

Game is fun but it sure crashes regularly and runs poorly, gonna be surprised if that is fixed in time for full release.

Wait, there are no private lobbies? Are they coming with 1.0? I was planning on picking this up with some friends and have the AI fill unfilled roles like Vermintide.

Is it going to have the Vermintide 2 problem where level grinding is a huge thing that will quickly fragment the player base?

Current favorite voices: manic German psyker that sounds like the TF2 medic, Cadian Christian Bale impersonator, big Ruski ogryn, and Robin Atkin Downes

Special mention for the psyker “Savant” voice which reminds me of that guy from Castlevania

I just think the use of the word nazi has connetations that don’t go 1:1 with the imperium. Like space authoritarians yeah, but like there’s a bit of a gulf. I think the nazi thing more comes from the iconography of eagles and black uniforms, and the iconography of Roman stuff and use of Latin words also dovetails with that because nazis drew on the same imagery. But it’s less that it’s all 100% definitely a commentary, and more that it might have started as a commentary but it doesn’t always get used in the same way anymore. I don’t think gamesworkshop today is writing the imperium as if it’s still a space nazi comparison.

It’s a militant religious authoritarian regime, the shorthand of space nazis always just makes me tug my collar a bit. There are specific beliefs and systems when you refer to nazis that the imperium just doesn’t really reflect.

I've had one mission join hiccup, no crashes though. Thus isn't the complete version of the game, it's core feature stess testing. And it's good. Fun times, just, pay attention to your wounds and health bars please I'm not an apothecary

I just wish this game wasn’t a left 4 dead style thing, everything about it looks cool but I’m just not into these coop grind shooters. It’s not how I like to play shooters, I like to slowly make my way through a level and like complete a game. The idea of bum rushing alongside 3 randoms over and over again for loot isn’t appealing, but everything else about the game looks great

  • WeaverWeaver Breakfast Witch Hashus BrowniusRegistered User regular
That's fair Prohass, I wish I could could stand around and look at the scenery etc too, I often lag behind at start doing that.

I would say bot matches are good for this, but since it borrows the director structure of Left 4 Dead, it tends to spawn hordes to kill you if you stand around too long

I do wish there were more time to gawk! The environments are really incredible, the presentation is superb throughout
