Old DF threadDwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. Created by the brothers Adams: Toady One and ThreeToe over at
Bay12 Games, Dwarf Fortress is one of the games that inspired the popular hits like Minecraft, Terraria, Rimworld, Prison Architect etc.
Today the game is available in a new premium version over at:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/https://kitfoxgames.itch.io/dwarf-fortress?
Published by Kitfox Games, the premium version features a full amazing soundtrack and ambience, as well as a huge detailed tileset created by Ironhand, Neoriceisgood, Caroart, Meph and yours truly. And on Steam - Steam Workshop integration!
The bay12games.com version remains free and will feature all the GUI improvements of the premium version, while keeping the classic ASCII display. But supporting the Adams brothers in their now 20-year-old endeavour to create the most complex fantasy world simulation game ever is appreciated. You can also support them directly at the Bay12 website.

The release of the new version is today, expect a lot to change. The game will now feature a basic in-game tutorial to help you start, but other than that, be on a look out for new content. The mechanics stay the same, but the way you do things will change a lot, what with the mouse UI and such. Utilities like DFHack and its derivatives (like Dwarf Therapist) will also not work until they're updated.
I'll try to update the OP with new stuff as it emerges. Strike the Earth!

Thanks for finding it! I was searching all over the forums for times between specific dates...I figured it should still be around somewhere.
I don't know if there was a thread somewhere in that 2009-2010 gap. I feel like there must not have been, since the new one after that made a clean break from the previous format.
EDIT: Yea, it was located at https://forums.penny-arcade.com/vanilla/discussion/116092

I knew it was from one of the PA threads but couldn't remember where. I had copied and posted it to my Facebook page years ago (everybody in my friend's list was confused by it lol) and got a reminder about it last Friday and it got me all excited about today's release. Speaking of, it should be out nowish!
edit: oooo, it is! $30 ain't a bad price either! Now I just gotta finish this 12 hour workday so I can go home and play
Strike the earth
My tutorial fortress of Clappedlances, in the world of Numthur ("The Windy Universes") is ready to go
I dunno, I've spent way more money on games that were way less fun and that I played for waaaayyyy less. Obviously that sort of thing is subjective, but I don't ever want creators and artists to undervalue their work. Especially when a third party like Steam is getting their cut
I understand the economics and logistics. Just in this age and what DF provides 30 bucks may cause some pushback outside of "our" demographic. Again I will buy it because it is DF but I am kind of scared to watch some of these big streamers and the general reaction about the price of it... especially from the mob.
Whereas I am surprised it's not at least $40. They are generous developers.

I've heard that the help has been overhauled and in some ways amounts to an in-game wiki? I plan on checking it out.
One stockpile is everything but wood, and one stockpile is just wood
Guess which stockpile I built the carpenter's workshop adjacent to
The first one?
Everyone is streaming the steam version today.
I've made so many splints and sceptres
Although I've got a dwarf in a strange mood asking for (I think) silk, which I don't have, so unless he can hold off for two seasons I think I might have my first fatality coming up
Workshop support as well, dear god help me.
Dwarf Fortress has always had workshops and supports.
A horrible way for those dwarves to die, but a good omen for the Steam release!

Umm, you want me to do a tutorial stream? (they mostly didn't).
I'm finding that the overall mechanics are all but identical to the classic version, the options are simply hotkeyed differently and tucked into different menus than before.
Case in point: assigning rooms. Instead of the old way of making a room from a piece of furniture, you designate and assign the room from Zones. So to make an office, you place your furniture, designate the space as an Office, then select it in the Zone menu and assign the owner from there. Some stuff is actually so conveniently placed now that, by standard Dwarf Fortress logic, it's counter-intuitive. Need to look at your stocks? No need to menu dive, there is literally a stock button at the top of the screen. Need to know the mood of the fortress? The dwarf moods are right there at the top of the screen. I'd say there still needs some work on the UI front, but it's now sort of bizarre how convenient a lot of this stuff is now. Instead of the build list being a pile of items, some related and some not, everything is grouped much more logically such as farming/food production stuff is its own whole sub-menu for construction instead of being piled in with all the other workshops.
Beyond things like that, I'm not seeing any mechanics that really differ significantly from the classic version. Do the basics of securing a fortress area, set up basic food/drink production and sleeping quarters, get some basic crafts going for early trade, and set up the bare minimum of worship/entertainment stuff. Then expand as your priorities are made clear by the environment.
Really love the graphics and music. I hate the mouse and hotkeys, but I'll get used to them.
