Willow, you idiot. The Willow Thread

edited December 2022 in Debate and/or Discourse
Here is the thread for the Willow series, the sequel to the 80's movie, Willow.
Here is a trailer:
https://youtu.be/uzn2izehkno

The sequel starts with a good 20 years passing and Sorsha is queen and Madmartigan has disappeared. They had two children, Kit and Arik.
Kit is gay for Jade a who is trying to be the first female knight for the queen. Arik is a womanizer that is currently infatuated with a cook named Dove.
There is also this guy in the dungeon that Sorsha knows that has a history with Madmartigan.
Something awful happens in the first episode and they all go on a quest.

https://youtu.be/da7BYWyvwO8

It is currently on the third episode and the show is considered woke just because it has two gay lead characters.

So far, I am enjoying it. Discuss.

    C/P from my Willow post on the not-Willow thread:

    I can acknowledge the weaknesses Willow the movie has, but I love it and enjoy it despite its flaws. It's got heart, it's fun. It has a snow sled chase. The hero wins not by suddenly becoming more skilled, but by being clever.

    Willow the series....I dunno. I already had to cringe when our first fight scene was at night, barely lit, and each shot lasting 2 seconds, like every modern action show and movie does fight scenes. Just, ugh.

    Episode 3, I could summarize as follows:
    (willow): Hey everyone! Where's Elora? We need to find her, she can't have gone far! We haven't seen her since last night, so make sure we walk around slowly looking for her! I mean, it's not like anyone could have kidnapped her or anything.

    <they find her anyway somehow>

    (bad guy): I'm gonna totally win.
    (good guys): No, you're totally outnumbered.
    (bad guy): Am i? (suddenly more backup magically poof into existence without making a SINGLE SOUND. Like, they're in ARMOR walking through a FOREST and somehow they have full stealth mode engaged?)

    ---

    (Silas): What are you doing?
    (Willow): Making a distraction!
    *poof*
    <all bad guys gone, Elora gone, horses gone>
    (others): distraction for whom, exactly?

    ---

    (willow): Hurry, they have Elora, and if they get her to Bad Guy Place, it'll be the end of everything!
    (also willow): Oh, look at the pretty clouds. Everyone stop for a scenic shot of us looking at the ominous clouds while I pontificate dramatically.

    ---

    <storm intensifies>
    (others): We should split up and try to catch up to them.
    (willow): No, the storm is to split us up and make us weaker to defeat us. We MUST stick together!
    <5 minutes later>
    (other): Fork in the road. Which way?
    (willow): No clue. Both should get us to the right place. We should split up!

    ---

    <Elora escapes her captors and runs through a DARK AND MURKY FOREST. But someone didn't tell the SECOND UNIT crew, who films the next scene in a BRIGHTLY LIT AND FRIENDLY FOREST>
    Elora: Hi I'm Elora.
    Hubert: Nuh uh.
    Elora: Yes! See this mark?
    Hubert: But aren't you supposed to be a curly red head?
    Elora: No! Thanks to a flashback, we established that I'm blonde and straight haired now!
    Hubert: Odd change. Why's that?
    Elora: They probably couldn't find any curly red head female leads to play me.
    <Jade glares from offscreen>
    Hubert: Well, we pledge to protect you and even die for you!
    Bad Guy: <Appears with Full Stealth Engaged> Okay.
    <Hubert dies>
    Elora: Quick, run to the first unit crew!
    <Elora and Anne run to the first unit crew and get caught almost immediately>
    Elora: Don't kill her!
    <they kill Anne>
    Bad Guy: This is your fault y'know.

    ---

    <Kit and Boorman are on one half of the path, walking slowly with their horses, because speed clearly isn't of the essence>
    Boorman: Hey, I know the world's end is being threatened, but let's go on a side quest!

    (editor's note: I called this out specifically while we were watching as a family, and my daughter pointed out that I completed every side quest in Breath of the Wild, so I shouldn't be allowed to complain about this one. I still did.)

    ---

    <BAD GUYS and ELORA arrive at the same place as the side quest for Kit & Boorman>
    <Willow and company arrive at the same place as the side quest>
    <Kit and Boorman come out>
    (Bad guy): Hey, it's super dark, no light, and now it's also raining. Let's fight!
    <they fight>
    (willow): I have to save my magic for something important.
    <Silas gets SHOVED a bit. It is FATAL>
    (willow): That might have been a good time.
    (Silas): Why didn't you use it sooner?
    (willow): Because this way you get an Oscar-Worthy Death Scene(tm).
    (Silas): Meh <dies>

    ---

    (Elora): It's hopeless, we don't even know where we are!
    (willow): I know where we are. <pauses>
    (others): where!?
    (willow): Walk around this rock and I'll show you.
    <they go around the rock>
    (willow): Nockmarrrrrr.
    (Kit): Nockmarr!
    (Elora): Nockmarr!
    (Jade): it's only a model green screen.

    ...Okay, maybe not so much of a summary there :/

    Addendum: the show has promise, and has an awesome cast, so I'm holding out hope. But the writing could...use some work, I guess. Can't quite put my finger on it yet.

    ETA: thanks for the thread @Krathoon !

    I dug the third episode, but agree with some of the sticking points.
    Willow says that the Crone is going to try and force them apart, which would be bad, presumably because they're more powerful together, but also, Willow doesn't seem to trust anyones capabilities. He's always trying to run distraction and it comes across as both fear that he's gonna fuck up, and fear that he's not gonna be able to protect anyone.

    When the group splits, I don't think Willow and Grey could have forced Boorman and Kit at swordpoint to follow them, and yeah, breaking away was stupid, but Kit is also uninterested in Elora at all.

    Regarding the changing of the weather

    It's... pointed out several times that a supernatural storm is brewing, and they're running towards it.

    Willow only doubles back when he gets the vision of where he's supposed to go, so it's not random, but his point was ultimately proven right; because Kit and Boorman peeled off, the group entered into a melee extremely disadvantaged, with Willow still trying to get everyone literally behind him, which also almost gets them killed when the wagon explodes.

    Instead, the corrupted knights started with the upper hand, and Silas unfortunately was thrown so hard against a wall he died. Which. You know? Maybe not fantastical enough for a fantasy show since I saw him slam the wall and go, "ah, that'd kill someone on - oh."

    I get why they dropped the first two episodes back to back, because if they ended on the third one with the approach to Nockmaar, that's a bit of a low point for the group.

    Ep. 1 and 2, A-, ep 3, B, but more curious than anything else what happens next.

    I do have to say I was kinda waiting for
    when Elora said maybe with the wand she could do it, Willow to look sheepishly back at the flaming wreckage of the wagon and be like "well...."

    Honestly I just hate how it feels like we have at least 2 separate supernatural moments of people withholding things for no reason other than conflict. Also the fight scene was such a muddled mess and ye gods why do a fight scene if that's what you're going to do?

    The Kit character is not working. I get the arc is supposed to be jaded annoying to believer but that's not coming across. Her dialogue is CW level and the actress is incapable of elevating it.

    Literally: "We're supposed to get married tomorrow. That's weird, right?" delivered by a SoCal teenager.

    Erin Kellyman is pulling it off in every scene, so I think we won't be seeing much more of Ruby Cruz after this series.

    I just hope the lesbians survive. It hope it will not follow the "Bury your gays" trope where one of them professes their love and dies horribly.

    So far, it’s seemed like a puffed-up CW show

    Pros:
    - gays!
    - good cast, good chemistry
    - nice costumes
    - excellent exterior photography

    Cons:
    - anemic story and flat dialogue
    - cheap af interior sets, completely sparse
    - bad interior lighting and photography
    - shitty pop music covers??? Why???
    - everything and everyone is always clean and spotless despite living in the woods

    I've only watched the first 2 episodes, but I feel sorry for the actor playing the princess. The character is so thoroughly unlikable. Spiderman's classmate is good though, how he makes notes when people tell them stuff is just so sensible, I wish we saw more of this in shows.

    I am wondering what they are going to do with Madmartigan. Val Kilmer did not come back for it. So, I assume he met some horrible fate that they will uncover.
    Maybe they will find his body or release his spirit or something.

    If Kilmer feels well enough and it's safe, covid-wise, I'm sure they'd find a way to get him into a second season, if it happens. The man looks terrible, can't talk, and is fragile, health-wise, so the conditions would have to be right.

    Episide 3 looked like two different partial episodes edited together.

    The dialog is about the only thing with less flow that the plot.

  • KrathoonKrathoon Registered User regular
    The editing in the third episode was really jumpy. It makes me wonder if they lost some footage and had to cover it up.
    That whole thing with the smoke bomb was suspicious.

  • GilgaronGilgaron Registered User regular
    Haven't watched the third episode yet but the kids enjoyed the first two. I thought it was odd how little they dwelled on the death of the party member or the garrison. Agreed that the castle felt fairly barren in ways that seemed surprising for a D+ show when they surely have heaps of medieval props in a warehouse they can scatter around.

    I wish they would just release all the episodes like Netflix.

  • KrathoonKrathoon Registered User regular
    I think the idea with the distraction is that Willow is not the best at strategy. His party did not know about the distraction he was creating and could not take advantage of it.
    Willow screws up sometimes. That was why Sorsha said he is not a sorcerer. He is not the wisest person.

    This show is one of my favorite things on TV right now.

    It really does share a lot in common with shows like Buffy/angel which.. well are some of my favorite shows!

    Its a lot of fun having a big fantasy epic that is so thoroughly ok with just be silly and fun above all else.

    And the DnD style group of characters is fantastic. Each with fun little twists on the tropes.

    Even the princess! Where they take the "im too cool for all of you" character and just.. acknowledge how damn obnoxious that really is.

    Yeah it was better than 3 more boorman of course, still felt like a bottle episode, except this time not for previous eps but for the movie. I dunno the show still feels like its missing something, like the writing feels too long and rushed at points.

    I fucking loved that episode, holy shit.

    About ten seconds after a shadowy figure showed up I went
    Oh that helmet and sword, is that General Kael's ghost?

    And then the captions identified the shadow as General Kael's ghost.

    Willow getting called out on getting lucky during the movie needed a little more room to breathe bjt the entrance of Kit, Boorman and Jade with the spirits of Sorsha and Mad Martigan was so nice.

    The final shot of the episode, man. What in the world.

    And I will forever love bummer covers of already bummer songs.

    Edit: Me and like four other people are gonna get really disaapointed when this doesn't get renewed.

    I got the feeling we were missing scenes since Kit also mentions a spiral staircase trying to eat her.

    It also helped add to the thematic confusion as to why no one was where they said they were going to be despite going in directions they knew.
