In Romance languages, Thursday is named after the Roman god of the sky (and thunder), Jupiter. In Latin, "Jupiter's day" would be expressed as "Jovis dies", because "Jovis" is the possessive declination (like conjugation but for nouns) of "Jupiter". That's why there's a 'v' in "jueves" (Spanish), and no "-piter" in "jeudi" (French).
