[OOC] Cyberpunk RED - The Network Plague [PBP]

It's the ninth decade of the 21st century. The corporate wars are finally coming to an end. The numerous megacorps of the era have decided it's more in their interests to profit from collective bargaining agreements than to continue waging war with other. It's bad for PR. Besides, they have bigger problems than each other.

Up until now, Netwatch had been winning the war against the long-dormant DataKrash virus. Piece by piece, day by day, the network was slowly becoming more accessible. First to only the most elite agents, then less knowledgeable subordinates, and, after much oversight and peer view, the casual populace at large.

Then all their progress got brought to a crashing halt.

g36hlcksv9im.png

Murmurs of a ghost in the machine. Specters in the back of a netrunner's peripheral vision. Connections going dark, and unable to be resumed.

Those in the know say this is beyond anything that even the most high-end BlackICE could pull off.

As if this weren't bad enough, the problems didn't stop with netrunning. First it was thought to be a barrier meant to keep prying eyes away from delving too deep into the lost reaches of the network.

What's become most alarming is that the phenomenon is spreading out to affect a wider radius. Casual users accessing brain dances, news feeds, social media; all of them reporting recurring blackouts, connectivity issues, and in select cases, personal injury.

Whatever is happening, it's spreading. A rogue AI? An evolving virus? An elite netrunner spreading chaos in their wake?

The Megacorps are of a rare accord in one thing: it has to be stopped, and Arasaka is willing to pay dearly for anyone willing to step up to the plate.

Supposedly they have a line to a solution, but it's not anything remotely aboveboard. They're deliberately going to ground to find the right team.

Word on the street is that their fixers are ready and waiting for that group to come along. All you have to do is answer their call.

____________________

Ideally a good 2-4 person team would be good for the campaign. I think it would be easier and more fluid to run the game in real time(i.e. discord or whatnot), but I'm open to PBP if the majority prefer it.
(Edit: PBP it shall be.)

You should have access to the Cyberpunk RED book for character creation. Anything from expansions is up to my discretion.
If you don't have the book(s), read on for the abridged version, or feel free to ask me for help:
(I also found a helpful spreadsheet here that may help.)

Character Creation Basics
l0glg13pxfvk.png

Role:
Rockerboy(re: Johnny Silverhand, musicians and rebels), Solos(mercenaries, or... well, Solo), Netrunners(hackers), Techs(mechanics/engineers), Medtechs(Trauma Team, field medics), Medias(Reporters), Execs(corporate types), Lawmen(5-0), Fixers(the ones who make the deals), Nomads(Max Max, wanderers, vagabonds, call them what you will).

Lifepath
Culture (North American, Asian, etc.), Personality, Clothing/Style, Affectations, Motivations/Relationships, Background, Environment, Motivations, etc.

Statistics (62 points, must be <9 or >1, or can be defaulted based on Role
Mental (INT[intelligence], WILL[willpower], COOL[social skills])
Combat (TECH[technique], REF[reflexes])
Fortune (LUCK)
Physical (BODY[size], DEX[dexterity], MOVE[movement])

Skills (86 points, linked to statistics, must be <7 and >1) (p. 82-85) of RED sourcebook for the full list, let me know if you need these)
Awareness, Body, Control, Education, Fighting, Performance, Ranged Weapon, Social, Technique
(Must be level 2: Athletics, Brawling, Concentration, Conversation, Education, First Aid, Human Perception, Language(Slang), Local Expert(Residential Area), Perception, Persuasion, and Stealth.

Gear
Variable by class, or $2,550EB to start.
(Weapons, Armor, Outfits, Cyberware, etc.)

Some of these involve extensive lists of data, so if you need these broken down, feel free to ask or toss me a message for help. It's not as daunting as it looks, honest. :)
(Not compared to Shadowrun, anyway...)

Well that's only two, which I'm not sure is doable... but it might be, if you're both down for it, the worst that happens is I go full Mike Pondsmith and you both die horribly. :sunglasses:

So uh, thought I'd bump if there was any interest in this(uh, wow, almost two years later), since I got to play in a campaign and it was a blast. I'll probably start off with something (much) smaller in scope, and maybe 2-4 players instead(which is totally doable in Cyberpunk, and better for the GM's sanity).

Due to being on the other side of the world as you lot I might not be able to time it, unless it’s PbP, but I reckon I ought to play one last game on here.

I’ll figure out the rules as we go. B)

So how would I go about creating the Punk part of Cyberpunk and making a Rockerboy?

Should also note, there's a really cool app on phones that works wonders for character creation -

Probably on iOS too, I imagine.

A quick attempt at a character sheet!

Apparently that code is the export?

If not, I’ll be a Bosnian Tech immigrant named Krila to the everyone who needs to know, but Gabriel Gasnik on his passport.

Ok kewl. I’m thinking a netrunner.

    so..
I think I have the crunch worked out:
    ...
I would put the code here, but it looks like exporting the character exports everything to the cloud via the six character code.
    ...
I guess, here's the code, and we can check whether I've done this okay:
    LPUE91

All the fluff attached to that character is subject to change.
But it's largely stat buy and skill buy from that spreadsheet, plus the default Rockerboy inventory + a Medbag.

  • discriderdiscrider Registered User regular
I still need to work on my fluff, but just taking from an election thread over here:
Cyberpunk was supposed to be a warning, but we officially made the switch (I know the trajectory was already pretty much set in stone).

But you can still work on saving your community. Mike Pondsmith has some words of wisdom I think for the times.
He’s excited about the game and excited about the future, in general. Despite his cyberpunk misgivings. But we’ll have to work for it. “My wife thinks I’m a pessimist. But I study history and what I see is that humans generally screw it up every 60 years, but they get it pulled together,” he says. “We can have a better future if people aren’t lazy. People tend to like to coast. People tend to like to let somebody else deal with it. This is how we get dictators. People say, ‘I don’t wanna think. Thinking is kind of hard. I’ll let this guy on a big horse tell me what to do.’ But you don’t buy that for free.”

And that nails one of the big themes of Pondsmith’s particular brand of cyberpunk—the responsibility that comes with freedom. In his game world, anyone can be a hero because everyone has access to the same basic level of technology. It’s a point of view that’s bled over into the real world. “You’re going to have to think if you want a better future. With the tools and capabilities available to us, more and more of that falls in your hands,” he says. “It’s too bloody easy for people to decide, ‘You know, I think I'll just kind of go to my job. And, you know, I'll gossip on the internet, and I'll hang out, and I'll let some political party decide what I'm going to do.’ And the next thing you know, you go, ‘Where did my health care go? Why are we fighting a war over here?’ Because you didn't pay attention. Maybe you should have paid attention.”

In a world where people are feeling increasingly powerless, Pondsmith sees the message of hope inherent in the cyberpunk genre. “The thing that I love about cyberpunk inherently is that it's about paying attention, and dealing with things. If you use the technology and your knowledge right, you can make it better. You can’t just let the boostergangs roll over your community, or you’re going to let a microtech tear down your apartment building to put up a microwave tower,” he says.

“It’s never free. But the fight doesn’t have to always be violent. Sometimes it’s just about standing up and getting counted.”

Anyway, that sort of reflects what I've been thinking about the importance of the stories we tell ourselves recently.

Ok here’s who I got for my netrunner

    Hopefully the code works: QSA7XW

I will flesh out her background a bit more, but I like the idea of a twenty something wannabe netrunner who runs a side gig as an amateur urban spelunking/parkour influencer by posting vids from her agent.

That's almost eerily similar to my Netrunner's story, she's a runaway who's trying to make a name for herself because she's sick of being held back.

Maybe a look over to ensure I didn't screw up to bad? I just used presets in the builder.

Ok I had to recreate Kit but here’s the new charsheet. I took into account that this takes place later in the timeline, so neuroport and neurodeck, no cybereyes, pretty much all that changed. The cosmetics stayed the same.

Unsure if you wanted to tank Empathy that badly, but you probably want to swap out your radio scanner and radio communicator cyberware for the gear components of the same name. Otherwise you'd also need a cyber audio suite to use them.

(Empathy is reduced by installed cyberware, as Humanity starts at 10*Empathy and as you spend Humanity for cyberware, your Empathy reduces to match)

I will gladly take direction on character creation.

I'm looking to play a medtech that is good at most tech, sling a rifle (heat heist scene please), and does what she can for the poor health care wise.

Mostly I slowly absorbed stat selections and gear from the pre-constructed templates and then re-entered it all into the detailed character builder with minor modifications.
So mostly I can't help, but I did also get confused with cyberware having the same name as gear, and the Rockerboy also has the cyber audio suite as standard, so the radio scanner and radio communicator stood out to me in your list.
