Really wish that NIS had stuck with the HD sprites, they had so much character and looked great.

Big slap in the face that HD Prinny is the loading icon, too.

Or if they did something like guilty gear where it's 3d models but still kind of presented as a sprite. 3d chibi models were needed on 3ds and psp due to hardware limitations. They shouldnt be chibi on a capable console because the developers don't understand polygons and optimization.

Okay, no team attack animation is nuts. That goes all the way back to 1.

I'm almost done with the demo, and there's some really baffling changes at play here. Disgaea is starting to feel oddly... generic, and I'm not sure I like where the series is going.

This seems to incorporate so many JRPG gameplay tropes that it feels almost satirical. I didn't play 6, so maybe that started this trend, but I already saw elements of it in 5, which is so far my least favorite.

For instance, you don't have to worry about passing a bill to recruit new characters, you can just 'buy' them, and pay extra to buff their levels, but I liked starting from scratch and having tougher bills to try and make stronger characters out of them.

There's also the massive amount of sidequests, optional objectives, and other grindy JRPG things. Story sequences even end on this FF7-esque spiral into a random battle, and the segments themselves are just talking portraits, they don't feel as immersive any more.

Not to mention the aforementioned removal of team attacks. It's not even very clear what having team ups do anymore, since the damage output doesn't even feel that different.

The new attack animations are cool, but like with any JRPG over-the-top attack animation, they get old real fast, and it was fine just to have them play out on the map, rather than move over to a generic backdrop that feels distanced from where you're actually fighting at. (And the 3D models lack the charm of the classic sprites, but they tried their best, I guess.)

It's not all bad, though. D7 has some pros:

-I really dig the story and characters, the main duo are way more engaging and fun than D5's and even 4's(which I liked more than 3). It feels more like the wacky fun tone you'd expect from Disgaea. Even 2 had Rozalin and Adell's banter to keep the wackiness element to balance out the more serious stuff.

-I was worried about Tenpai Sato's absence, but the new music is great, no complaints there.

-The new geopanel triggering animation is super fast-paced, and I love how quick combos are now.

So yeah, it's a very mixed bag. I'll probably get it at one point, unlike 6, but the demo's made it very much a 'wait for a price drop' situation for me.

I've been enjoying it so far, certainly more than I did 6, and it does feel like their move to 3D will let them better reuse assets with each game so hopefully the transition pays off more dividends with their sequels and side-projects.

That said, I do love me some fancy sprites fighting it out and have high hopes for Ogre ba Unicorn Overlord.

99% of the quests you can pick up are just to get extra evilities you can mostly ignore. I'm also pretty sure just buying levels when you make generics was in 5. You just couldn't buy something higher than your highest character.

I don't like the cutaway from the map for abilities, so I turned them off after a little while. But they did put in an option called skipB which skips animations except the first time something is used.

I'd say it's so much better than 6 so far. I'm only on chapter 6 or so though before I made a left turn into some item worlding, power leveling, and unlocking martial training.

And aside from the normal anime cringe slapstick that they usually have, there are some genuinely funny lines as well that were probably funnier because I wasn't expecting them at all.

I finished the demo and have no desire to get the full game anytime soon, especially since I'm still playing the (vastly superior looking) 5. It's scary how it feels like playing a newer game.

Picked up Disgaea 5 recently, haven't played since a brief try of...2 I think? Anwyays, currently in the 2nd episode, and am a bit confused by the quests. According to a chart I found I need to kill 10 of something.. do they all need to be during the same fight? Re-running the same level multiple times, 4 targets per, doesn't seem to be doing anything.

    No, it's cumulative.

hmmm.. quest is 'Prinny Squad Tour' and from what little I can find, is like searching john smith.., I'm supposed to kill 10 prinnys. I go to the first zone which has 4 of them with the quest markers overhead. I've done that quite a few times now, but the quest doesn't complete. Just unlocked Item World so maybe those will count.

    Thx for the response :)

And I got it straightened out. Looks like you have to do how ever many runs altogether before exiting the dimensional selection screen. Either that or something changed, meh!

Were you perhaps throwing them? Because that doesn't count as kills.

That is definitely something they should put on a sign or something.. I DID do a few runs throwing before so that could have been it :(

Did Deathblow get nerfed in 5? It used to kill anything no matter what, now on some enemies it just doesn't work.

that is a pretty wild announcement, but you can literally see the slowdown and choppyness almost every time they go to targeting. ill wait until it comes out on ps4/5 or steam.

It's also using the ugly 3D models from the later Disgaea games. Not surprising, but still disappointing.

Yeah, this is definitely either a PS4/5, Steam, or Super Nintendo Switch game.

Im not a huge fan of the 3d models vs the older sprites. but the D7 models were a pretty big improvement over 6. Also, the few monsters they showed in the trailer were new/werent ones in disgea6 or 7, so since models are way easier to move around, they could be added to a future disgaea or whatever else they decide to make.
