looking at lovecraftian movie lists, there's a movie called Sacrifice from 2020 and a movie called Underwater from 2020? But the one you're thinking of may have just not made this guy's list

They might be thinking of The Empty Man? I haven't seen it but I heard it was kind of about that stuff, in atmosphere if nothing else

I also get the sense the High Table may very well have punished Santino on their own but John did the job first. Which, again, they have to be seen retaliating to, because that isn't his vengeance to take. Some random gun for hire takes out one of your guys? You can't let that slide, even if Santino wasn't long for this world anyway. likely they wouldn't even admit that there was wrongdoing on Santino's part. The Adjudicator doesn't give any indication that the Table holds him at fault but that isn't anyone else's business

Is there a lot of sloppy writing in there? Yes, certainly. But it also very much rings true with me for how powerful, corrupt, ossified institutions actually operate. Rules for thee but not for me, and if a member of the elite actually does transgress beyond what that society will allow, it will be handled as an internal matter rather than leave it up to anyone lower in the hierarchy. Even when such nakedly self serving behavior is pretty stupid in the long run

The issue I have is, once you consider how the system functions in practice, John's actions make no sense in 2 and 3. Full plot discussion for 2 and 3 to follow.
Santino calls in his marker, orders John to make an "illegal" kill. John is fully aware of the consequences of doing this, so he refuses. Santino applies force. At this time, John should kill Santino. The terms of the marker, in fact, him having one at all, is a secret to everyone else. John should just kill him, having given him the chance to live with the first refusal. Any suggestions of John being "honor-bound" are stupid, because John would not accept him calling the marker to shoot himself in the forehead, for example. The marker as presented was that, just with more steps. The bargain between the two was "I will perform X jobs for you to live my life separate from the organization, with the addition of one more job Y to be performed at a time of your choosing." If job Y is "kill yourself", it violates what John actually received for getting into the bargain to begin with and nulls the entire thing. There's no deal if you say, "Give me X now and Y later, and in return you can have Z. Btw, Y IS Z, I will give you nothing."

But let's say John felt performing the illegal kill and then being targeted for elimination immediately afterwards was (somehow) the less suicidal option. The rest of 2 happens, John breaks the rules of the Continental and is excommunicated. He is now free game to be killed by any killer in the game AND can't use goods or services. The Adjudicator begins working against him, specifically calling persons and assets into play to kill him. When they are in the same room... John should immediately kill the Adjudicator. What possible argument is there AGAINST doing this? This person is a real, tangible threat to his life (so that removes the argument of John doesn't feel like it) AND they are harming John's remaining allies as the movie goes on. I get the sense that John doesn't do it because it's like... a rule. You treat them as just the mouthpiece for the High Table. But... they're not. They're making decisions and conducting an investigation to make things happen. If you kill them, the High Table has to send another one who lacks the information and preparations of the first one. There might not BE very many of these, you could conceivably kill ALL of them! And what, you're afraid to make things worse? Excommunication IS the worst! That's the nice part about it, there isn't a worse condition, so go wild, you moron!
Well, I think it's important to remember that the rules may be stupid and arbitrary but John and the rest seem to believe in them and enforce them, so them being stupid and arbitrary is kind of besides the point.

We're told that a marker is a really big deal, and we only see two of them in the films so far. So it makes sense that something about them means that yes, Santino can use one to have John kill his sister and he has to do it or be killed. And you're right in that the smartest thing for John to do would have just been to kill Santino. But John believes in these damn rules, so that option is out for him. So he's left with Winston's advice, which is to complete the marker and then kill him, which is perfectly within the rules. These are all assassin's and killers, the rules seem to exist solely so they can all coexist and do business. But they still want to kill people from time to time, so they make sure that they can so long as they follow certain protocols

Harrelson always had that vague idiot libertarian stoner vibe that made me wonder if it was a persona or he'd eventually pull this bullshit.

Fran Drescher is someone I have not heard anything about in probably 20 years.

Oh course Woody couched it in faux concern for “the crew”
“It makes me angry for the crew,” Harrelson continued. “The anarchist part of me, I don’t feel that we should have forced testing, forced masking and forced vaccination. That’s not a free country. Really I’m talking about the crew. Because I can get out of wearing a mask. I can test less. I’m not in the same position they’re in, but it’s wrong. It’s three years. Stop.

“As an anarchist, I don’t do well with mandates,” he concluded.

The dumb Harrelson monologue from SNL just reminded me that idiots still like to pretend that there was ever a "lockdown"

  • ProhassProhass Registered User regular
Also that lockdown made any sense as a conspiracy. Who does it benefit? It’s politically damaging to anyone who enforces it. I assume it’s just a case of people thinking that the puppet masters like to “control” for controls sake, because any logical goal behind the conspiracy eludes them, so they just assume moustache twirling

The Stunt Woman is an interesting one. It's this semi-biographical film about Yeoh and Sammo vaguely retracing their steps in the HK film industry with some intrigue and stuff thrown in. Ends up going down the tubes by the end because, very ironically, Yeoh breaks her back attempting a stunt---her career worst injury. It's a stunt that her character in the film is performing, and she's scared to do it too. It's also directed by Ann Hui, who's one of Hong Kong's most acclaimed and versatile filmmakers who doesn't get mentioned often in the West because she isn't known for action films.

To be fair.... how many times when discussing the current fascism of the GOP do we say "the cruelly is the point.". Conspiracy folks just don't connect that they are helping the fascist side (or they see it as a benefit).

I always get irrationally angry whenever I see some idiot millionaire libertarian call themself an anarchist and complain about being mildly inconvenienced by the needs/health concerns of others, since all of the actual anarchists I know make minimum wage or less (in tipped service industry jobs) and yet still find the bandwidth to organize mutual aid groups that hand out free narcan, sandwiches, toiletries, coats and tents to people who need them in their community every week. Oh and they do it while still wearing masks.
