How do I make an OSX boot disk?

I’ve been gifted an old MacBook that has had the hard drive wiped. I think it’s a 2016, so it’s old but should still work. When I turn it on I get this flashing question mark folder…not sure what I need to put on a USB drive to install OSX and get this computer working.

Do you have another Mac? Here are instructions if so.

I’m pretty sure if you do Cmd+R at boot, it will get you to a menu where you could download MacOS from the web. At least on my 2012 MacBook Pro it does that.

Oh yeah, that's a thing. Can't say I've needed to do that kind of recovery.

i've done it about 100 times with work and its absolutely painless

the only issue is sometimes if the laptop has been dead for a while, the internal clock is fucked so the machine can't connect to the apple servers to download. This website is great as it tells you the exact command to put in to change the time (as it can be a bit annoying to write the time in mmddhhmmyy format)
