Finding Life Insurance Policies on Father?
MichaelLCIn what furnace was thy brain?ChicagoRegistered Userregular
Something I've been meaning to look into for awhile for my mother. Looked around a little, but could not really find anything. Or more specially, found nothing helpful.
Father passed away in 2021. He worked for Motorola for 20+ years from 1970s to late 90s? Any recommendations on how I might find if there were any polices on him? Moto was a good company back then so assume there's something out there. Thanks.
some states have programs where unclaimed money goes into their stewardship and is held until a correct beneficiary can be found
some companies use this because they want to get the money off their books and close out their accounts, etc
i'm not sure insurance would be applicable to these programs, but it's worth a look
in the florida one, you supply your name (in this case, probably your father's, unless you were a named beneficiary) and some other identifying information and they will tell you if they're holding any money, from who, and how much
Not sure if this is helpful, but I should think that if your kept a life insurance then bank statements would show payments made to an insurance company. Now the statements likely won't say what sort of insurance the payments covered, but they should tell you where to go and ask.
Also, but I would think this would have gotten sorted automatically. Many pension plans can include life insurance or at least I know they do here in Europe, but maybe it is worth looking into.

I believe every state has this. I've looked for free money for all 3 states I've lived in.
The web address for flordia one definitely makes it look like a scam, but it ends in .gov so it's probably real? Unless desantis is doing more bullshit down there than I regularly read about in the national news.

That was part of the trouble, I couldn't find HR to email. Every office he worked at - and essentially the company - is gone.
So I picked like the head of global benefits from LinkedIn and just asked. They did respond with a negative which is an answer at least.
Think i just needed a push to resolve, thank you.
I'll repeat what I say with every question I've asked about this - for the sake of your family, please keep good records. Unless your family is terrible then eff them.

I want to second or third going to your state's unclaimed property website. I've had a hard time getting my family to use those sites because like you, they think the sites look "Scammy", but they're 100% real and run by state agencies.
That website also gives other possible sources to find missing money (like the dept. of labor's website for unpaid wages, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation for unclaimed pension).
I have found missing insurance money (for one of my grandmothers) on the unclaimed property website for the state where she died. I found unpaid wages for one of my sisters from back in the 1980s! It's still there, because she refuses to use the website (again, fears of it being a scam).
The first place the above link sends you is unclaimed.org, where you can find the state unclaimed property websites for all 50 states. This is again from the government, even though it has a .org domain. And that website confirms that Florida's unclaimed property website is fltreasurehunt.gov.
The searches for each state allow you to search by just the last name if you want - very helpful if you have an uncommon last name and you can't be sure how the name was written on the policy. When I found the unclaimed insurance for my grandma, her stuff was under three different spellings of her first name.

Here's the .gov website that explains about them:
