I don’t really know what they’re talking about. The reviews I’ve seen have been pretty good and having played it for a little while I thought it was pretty okay and my 13 and 10 year olds, who are, ya know, the actual target demo, love it.

Exactly. This is just a repeat of Minecraft Dungeons, where people were angry it wasn't a hardcore Path of Exile clone with a Minecraft skin.
My kids tried it last night and were having a lot of fun. I have yet to dive in, but I'm sure I will.
And honestly, this is a super disappointing coming from the PA team. This game launched what, 20 hours ago? This comic was already in the can before the game officially released. They're definitely hedging their bet that people are going to be more attractive to anything that's shitting on this, versus giving it a chance.
But that's the internet for you.

There's a chunk of reviews that top out at about 80% (depending on the scoring system). Lots of 70s, some 50s. A few outliers way higher and lower than the average.
Then they exaggerated for comedic effect, as one does.
This doesn't mean the game is bad for you. Or your kids.

I've been looking into this game all day for some kids and it has been a sea of complaints about lacking basic features, severe bugs, poor gameplay, network issues, or just having a straight-up non-functional game on their hands. Nearly every post I've seen praising it has acknowledged that it has big problems.
And then a nuanced news post about how it is an introduction to a genre, for the kids. Sometimes they just want to make a comic about some ridiculous turn of phrase they cooked up and the actual game they're talking about is less important.
I have molting larvae at home - wet, writhing larvae - and I think it's important to have games that can teach kids what they need to know in order to grapple with traditional genres. I sorta wonder if this isn't the YA version of an RTS, which I imagine would make a grown person feel like they hadn't seen much. But kids don't know some of this shit. You can't just, like, start them out on C&C Generals.
Minecraft Legends is not an "RTS for kids", and if that is what people were expecting, they're going to be disappointed. It's not even what I would call a traditional RTS.
My spawns are also fans of classic RTS games. My now 8-year-old, for example, has over 100 hours played across the C&C franchise, over 50 hours in Dawn of War, and close to 20 in Rise of Nations. He's been playing RTS games since he was maybe 5 or 6 years old alongside his dad and brothers. So I'll go ahead and disagree on where you can and can't start young kids in the genre.
There's also a fantastic RTS series, 8-Bit Armies, that's not a bad place to start for the less tactically inclined that also happens to be 50% off on Steam right now.

I don't really think your kids are typical, though. If I was looking for a good intro platforming game for my 11 y.o., it's not going to help to tell me what your 11 y.o. who has been playing platformers for hours a week since they were 5 thinks is a good one.
Often, we adults use "kids" to be shorthand not just for people with less matured intellectual capabilities, but simply for people with less experience. So if someone was learning to read for the first time in their 30s, they might read "kids'" books first.

In the future, all games will be categorized by time.

It's made pretty clear in the comic that their only first hand impression of the game is from the trailer. And then they went and looked at the pre-release reviews, which are overall not great:

Mu favorite KLF song.
<yes the 'Mu' is a typo, but I am required by law to leave in a KLF reference>

Time-less.
