Lesser Known Mytholo[chat]

Everyone in the world knows Medusa, Anansi, and Paul Bunyan. Post a lesser-known subject from mythology that no one's heard about.

Have you heard of the Kelpies from Scotland? They either appear as horses or women who live in water and trick their prey into wading in a lake.

    Noooo my poooost

Brutally eaten by geth, poor little guy never even had a chance

I never figured out how to pronounce Cú Chulainn, Irish myth dude who fought off an army by himself. He was wounded in battle and could no longer stand so his buddies tied him to a boulder with rope, gave him a sword, and he kept on fighting.

    oh lesser known Mythology?

    Hershel of Ostropol!
Hershel of Ostropol (Yiddish: הערשעלע אסטראפאלער, romanized: Hershele Ostropoler, Little Hersh of Ostropol; 1757–1811) is a prominent figure in Jewish humor. Hershel was a prankster from Ostropol, Crown Poland (now Ukraine), who lived in poverty and targeted the rich and powerful, both Jew and Gentile. Common folks were not safe from his shenanigans, either, but usually got off lightly. He is also remembered by Ukrainian Gentiles as something of an ethnic folk hero,[1] who could take on establishment forces much larger than himself with nothing but his humor.

I mean, he's a real person and so not *really* mythology, but he's definitely become a legend and is used in parables.

As an example of one of his stories
Hershele was traveling along the road when he came to a small inn. He went up to the door and politely asked if he could have a bite to eat and a pile of hay in the stables on which to rest for the night. The innkeeper and his wife refused.

    - "Oh, really, you're going to say no to me?" snapped Hershel.
    - "Y-yes," stammered the innkeeper, beginning to get worried.
    - "You know what happens if you refuse me? I do what my father did when someone said no to him! Do you want me to do what my father did? Do you? Do you?"
    - "Give him what he wants," hissed the innkeeper's wife into his ear. "He's clearly insane. I don't know what his father did, but it must be something terrible!"

Agreeing with his wife, the innkeeper allowed Hershele to stay for the night, going so far as to offer him a large meal and a place at their table. After dinner, he offered Hershele one of his finest rooms, to which the vagabond happily agreed.

    - "So," he said as the dishes were cleared away. "Now that everything is settled, I'm curious: what did your father do?"
    - "Well, since you ask so nicely, I'll tell you," Hershele replied. "When my father was alone starving on the road, and he was refused anything to eat, why he'd go to bed hungry!"

Here's some fun mythology: Everybody's familiar with the typical image of the Buddha, whether skinny or fat he's always sitting in his temples looking very chill. Buddha's so chill that harming even insects is to be avoided if possible. Unfortunately some folks see a bunch of squishy monks praying to a dude who probably can't even do one pushup and they're like, "yes, these are definitely people we should rob."

For those guys, there's a different sorta Bodhissatva. Typically coming as a pair, they're looming statues outside the doors of the temple, holding up their hands in the traditional Buddhist symbol of, "Don't start nothing won't be nothin'"

    Agyo-Nio-Guardian-Fudarakusan-ji-Temple.jpg

    the-nio-statue-one-of-two-wrathful-and-muscular-guardians-of-the-buddha-standing-at-the-entrance-of-buddha-tooth-relic-temple-in-singapore-chinatown-2H5NERT.jpg

    kongorikishi-ni-o-japan-kamakura-period-14th-century-B8AFN7.jpg

While the Buddha sits and stares off into space in contemplation, the Nio guardians are absolutely yolked and ready to throw down, staring down furiously at you as you cross into the temple. They can be actually genuinely offputting, they're usually a bit bigger than life, like 7-8 feet tall, but with pretty realistic proportions, and it really kinda leaves your lizard brain uneasy that there's apparently a couple of very large angry men who both want to beat the shit out of you.

Shame, the Libra of Souls wrinkle and the way they did the chronology of the story timeline in the classic mode made 6 my favorite since 2.

English folklore says that the first person buried in a graveyard must protect it from harm

To avoid trapping a human soul, they would bury a dog first, which became a grim, watching over the graveyard and guarding against evil spirits

So don't worry if you see a ghostly black dog with red eyes in a graveyard, it's a Good Boy

Sure, in Yorkshire they're portents of death, but that doesn't mean they caused it

Finn McCool had beef with a Scottish Giant, grabbed a huge clod of earth and threw it. It landed in the Irish Sea, where it became the Isle of Mann. The hole.in the ground filled with water and became Lough Neagh. Also a tiny pebble fell off the clod and became Rockall

Very tired, and possibly doing round 2 on Saturday 🫠

The girl I was very nervous about meeting ended up being a total cutie who was very much on the same wavelength I am, and she made the first move so yay, awkwardness obviated.

But yes, lots of things in various places, much fun was had, also fancy booze and stuff

Getting mad about a F&F movie is like complaining about your local Burger King not being very good. You’re right. It’s not. That’s not why we’re there.

I think the F&F movies are awesome for people who like vroom vroom but the thing is I don't care about vroom vroom at all.

Like last summer I went to lake that my friends live on and they insisted I take a jet-ski that does 65mph out for a spin.

I did 65 from one end of the lake to another a couple of times and brought it back in and they were all "That's super exciting, right!?" and I lied and said "Haha yeah that was crazy!" but in reality? I got nothing out of it.

I would have rather been back at the dock listening to tunes and wading around with a drink in hand.

This is a big part of the writer's strike

The residuals formula for receiving payment for stuff you worked on has a built in assumption that content is syndicated and available to be taken up and shown on other networks (with a corresponding payment stream to residual recipients) - that is, there's a trade off between up front payment vs sharing in an ongoing revenue stream

But in the streaming era stuff just gets taken down and never made available elsewhere, so stops being an revenue source, which from the perspective of a person entitled to residuals is effectively a pay cut

I can think of two lesser known mythologic things.

    Näcken
I think this is really some form of spirit but it takes the shape of a nude man who sits and plays violin by a stream. Fairly sure this was something you didn't want to fuck around with.

    Skogsrå
This was a big fear of mine when I was a child. It is a woman/girl, nude because why not. Probably adjacent to a siren type of thing. Beautiful and humanoid but when viewed from behind she has a hole like a hollowed out rotten log. Some kind of anthropomorphized forest spirit.

To be fair, this is most of Scandinavian folklore.
