I liked Fast X, it was just dumb as hell.
I guess we have another 1-2 movies to get there but I am surprised that Dom didn’t bite it. He gave off such strong two days to retirement energy at the top of this movie. Speaking of, one thing that I always find hilarious in later Fast movies is how Vin tries to work in subtly flexing to look more imposing whenever he can. Like when he walks into Ames’ van with his fists balled up the entire time as hard as he can. I appreciate that Cipher’s haircuts get better with each movie. Speaking of, this movie had more women kicking ass than several of these movies combined. Letty vs Cipher ruled but I really appreciated Ramsey punching Pete Davidson out.
Jakob has had the hardest face turn of anyone in those movies. Cena really gravitates to cornball roles but this is the corniest motherfucker in existence. Or was. Even before the mid credits scene I was going “you know I haven’t seen a body” at his death and the plane with everyone else getting shot down. Gisele coming back sure was a choice. I feel like you can’t do two surprise resurrections back to back like that. Dante was a lot of fun even if his ability to always be three steps ahead is completely over the top.
For some reason I had gotten the impression they finally kill off Brian in this one so I was surprised when they didn’t even mention him once.

I just got out of Fast X and am in the camp of it was fine, but mostly because the action scenes did deliver, but the rest of the movie is definitely bloated.
I thought opening with the Fast Five climax was going to be a bad decision because it's an amazing scene and you're setting the expectation that they're going to top it, but it's important as there are tons of callbacks to it throughout the movie so it makes sense. The action doesn't quite hit those highs, but it gets pretty close. Loved John Cena hitting the FU through the floor on a goon. The street racing scene was the best one from the most recent movies and love to see the shot pull through the windows of each car to see every racer lined up. The final action scene was wonderfully over the top. I'm 75% certain that Jacob is actually dead, but who the fuck knows especially with Giselle returning at the very end.

I'm not completely sure what exactly Jason Momoa's character is, because it seemed to change from scene to scene, but he is definitely doing a lot of acting and a bunch of it is good, but I just think the concept for his persona is too much and honestly he's a villain we see too much of.

Leo Perry does a good job playing Lil B, Dom's son and John Cena is a lot of fun in this movie.

    Ending stuff
I knew it was part one of apparently three, but goddamn do they leave so many storylines just hanging without any kind of sense of resolution. Dom and Lil B are about to get hit by a flood from an exploded dam; Shaw left to get his mom nothing of that is resolved; Tej, Roman, Han, and Ramsey apparently got blown up, but I know they escaped we just don't see it; Giselle is back somehow and did save Cypher and Letty; Mia went to get Brian halfway into the movie and wasn't seen again; Hobbes gets taunted by Momoa's character and is set to return. They really needed to end with everybody together, but down and out instead of just cutting every scene off in the middle of it for us to wait to return to. Especially with how many flashbacks they had to stuff we already know, I'm not looking forward to seeing the first half of those scenes again in the sequel, but the run time of the movie was already too long so it's not like I would have wanted more movie.

The films biggest flaw was having the family split up for so much of the movie.

Show up to places you weren't invited. Put on a full concert. Refuse to elaborate. Get arrested.

Pretty great to see a band of that vintage giving airtime to pride in not a lolgay way.

Nolan promised that Oppenheimer is longer than Interstellar. He won't let the haters bring him down.

Oh, so finally saw the flash trailer “thanks” to Fast X, and it’s a shame bringing back Keaton as 80’s Batman is tied to such a shitshow.

To be fair, Dom has started the last 3 movies in “two days to retirement” mode.

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

I don't know if Blue Beetle will be good, but it's INSANE how much I love George Lopez in the trailer for it

Everyone talks about the absurdity of the F&F movies but

Imagine being the trucker that fought them off in the first movie.

Just get home like "Honey, you would not believe the day I had."
Then you flip on the news and
"Oh shit! That's them! They did what now?"

It took Spielberg a very long time to unpack his childhood, I think. It's part of what makes the Fabelmans remarkable, you sort of get the sense he looked back on some of his movies like, "Ah. Now I see why I did that"

This weekend, I ended up watching the other 2 big Japanese horror movies (that I know of) from 25-ish years ago, Ringu and Ju-On. My ranking is thus:

    Kairo
    Ringu
    Ju-On

Ringu is really good, but overall I personally prefer Kairo more. Ju-On feels more like a series of related shorts strung together by one super haunted house - mostly I was surprised by the body count in that one.

I can't imagine being excited to see any given particular Transmorpher after the last half dozen movies.

    Like, maybe morbid curiosity, sure

    But excitement?

I'm easy to please, give me Peter Cullen voicing Optimus and giant robot action.

As for the previous films, 4 & 5 were disasters, but Bumblebee was a step in right direction, and this seems more like that than 4/5.

Gonna be real here for a second

The 1986 Transformers is nostalgic, and it is an oddity in the way it fuckin murders all your toys to try and make you buy new ones, but I don't think it is actually very good.

I don't even know, honestly, if I would enjoy those even half as much if I didn't have a nostalgic love of Transformers, but the IDW stuff definitely reads better as a proper narrative than any of the old Transformers stuff.

80s cartoons (at least the American ones that I watched as a kid) were kinda across-the-board dogshit. Deliberately cheap, cynically designed to push toys, and never really intended to last in my opinion.

I can't think of a one that holds up. Things got a little better in the 90s, there are a couple of shows there that still work. But man were the 80s grim.

i strongly disagree. It's blatant on the marketing side, but it's a gorgeously animated film, and has one of the best OSTs of all time.

The OST sometimes feels like they're pulling a prank on the audience. Why on Earth is Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid the soundtrack to an action scene? Are they saying the scene is stupid? All the characters are? They... didn't read the lyrics and thought it sounded nice?

I outright wasn't allowed to watch them, my parents pretty much banned any kids TV that wasn't from the BBC or (Australian)ABC. But sometimes I'd be at the babysitters place, and she would put on some illicit material like Smurfs or Carebears or He-Man, and this would be tremendously exciting for all of about five minutes, until inevitably you'd realize: "oh this is actually not at all good"
