I do wonder what happened to his form. 2021 and 2022 he's arguably doing ok. He's never been exceptional, but he's in a reasonable place as a second seat driver that isn't supposed to be competitive and comparing to Max. 2023 he starts falling off in Monaco and while he's second in the drivers standings the resulting points is pretty trash with how dominant Max is. 2024 again starts off pretty decent and then falls off a cliff in Emilia. I guess looking at this it seems like maybe once he loses confidence for a season then he's done.

Barcelona 2023 was the race RB identified as when the problems with the car started. I still maintain, that at least a good part of Checos performance drop has to do with the car having those problems. Max is Max and even though the car was getting worse, it didn't catch up with him until midway through the 2024 season, when his performance also takes a nose dive and he only wins that WDC this year because Lando/McLaren made mistakes and Max dominated the early races. If McLaren had their act together any sooner, we'd be celebrating Lando as champion.

What I am saying is - because Checo isn't an all time great driver to begin with, the car problems affected him disproportionally.

It is funny that I open up the F1 website and there breaking news headline is currently Bottas going to be a reserve driver for Mercedes, and the Lawson news is a small story to the side.
