So I made what can ONLY be described as an impulse buy, with picking up an Oculus Quest 2 (its actually a party favor for this weekend, but was thinking "Well, if I really like it, I can just keep it instead of giving it away at the end as a gift") and after the first day of trying it out (read: fighting with the fucking thing to get it to work, angrily discovering that this was a closed platform and then cursing at how difficult it was getting SteamVR working) I was like "Who in the fuck is pushing this as a technology."….

The Quest 3 comes out in fall most likely. Nice upgrades on it as well.

Also get the Virtual Desktop app to stream from PC if you haven’t looked into it yet. Better experience and it has some little tools to make the picture better.

Skyrim and Fallout 4 are amazing in VR. There are some all-in-one installers for VR mod packs as well. I think Wabbajack is the name of that tool.

Check out the DrBeef and Flatscreen to VR modding Discords. Doom 1 and 2 VR are great.

One of my all time favourite VR experiences was playing Outer Wilds in VR…very well done.

As I was getting the thing ready to pack up (I was just going to return it thinking it wouldn't even make a good gift), I decided to give it one more go to try and get the thing working properly and was able to get SteamVR working consistently. Loading it up dumped me in ANOTHER room (this was really confusing as I thought the SteamVR room was the Oculus room and. . .yeah, I have never felt less "dialed in to technology" than when setting this thing up) and I halphazardly clicked on "Half Life: Alyx" thinking it was a demo for the game (it is instead just another "home").

Fucking. Sold. Holy shit. Like I messed with whatever the all-black VR that everyone had back in 2018 and while I was for sure impressed (SUBNAUTICA was sufficiently anxiety inducing and BEATSABER I almost fell over when one of those walls came speeding at me and I had my face turned away) I also was kind of like "Okay, this is fun for fifteen minutes." It still is fun for 15 minutes but if this DEMO is where VR is at right now. . .Jesus. One of my BIGGEST complaints about VR in 2018 was that awful "flick to move" bit (there was this robot game where it was like hard coded spots for you to "move" to); in tihs demo it still has it but you can ALSO move within your "Guardian Space" - like this LEGIT blew my mind when I saw how it worked in this demo. I literally thought "Wait, it's showing the 'Guardian Outline' - can I actually walk for...OH MY GOD!" I had drawn some rinkydink ass space on our living room floor to hurry through the setup process, but after futzing in the room/s we're gonna carve out a legit safe space in the living room (6X6 seems easily doable after I realized "You don't have to be facing the TV for this to work you idiot") to use this in.

Even graphically the demo looked good and was enough to get me to purchase ALYX (I had to clear out my filter and ignores because I wasn't getting anything popular that was VR as I was in the past sick of seeing those in listings, getting excited and seeing VR only) and some other titles (BEATSABER and AGE OF SORCERY or something). I was going to get THE ROOM VR - as ALL I could think about was "God damn, a 'puzzle' game would be amazing in something like this!" - but it's pretty short it looks like and I want something a little meatier. If anyone knows of any good escape room type games with good environment interaction (or any other non-FPS titles - doesn't have to be NOT FPS but can't just be that as that's kinda boring) by all means recommend.

. . .TLDR: very glad I didn't let my first impression frustration get the better of me with this OCULUS Q2 and committed to making SteamVR work (no chance I'm buying into the META storefront - no sir). I feel like Dean Pelton right now.

I got the 2nd worst headache of my life after trying the oculus for like 15 minutes at pax. I have no idea how anyone can stand messing with that.

I really want to get into VR but I'm going to try to hold out for a new index or something. If the quest wasn't Facebook I'd probably get one, but I just don't trust them to support it. We got one of those Facebook portals for free and it is constantly getting worse. As they have given up supporting it, apps that used to work like Microsoft teams have been pulled from the device. It's slowly turning into a brick.

I definitely can not marathon something like this, so was only looking for games that would be well suited for some drop in drop out trippy play. Like, I tried NMS and - forgetting that the controls were like operating a real fucking ship - I can't see that I could do the rote stuff in VR. I bet dogfighting - again, once I actually had a decent handle on the controls and how to properly get the VR view I wanted - is fantastic in the thing, and then you hop off after like a few fights and get back to work.

So . . . Dave The Diver is incredibly fun and charming. Anyone that keeps up with gaming news will be aware of that, but as is often the case, modern gaming sites are a bit off in their commentary.

Gaming journos have compared the game to Stardew Valley. While there is a somewhat similar whimsical and idyllic vibe, this does not capture the gameplay loop.

    It's Recettear . . . IN WATERRRRRR!!!!!!

I suppose the actual gameplay can be more directly compared to Moonlighter in that you have time slots in the day to use for diving to both explore and harvest fish and an evening timeslot for capitalism. And there's a good amount of polish and focus, something Moonlighter had but Recettear didn't. Instead of setting prices and haggling though, you're working at a sushi restaurant so it's more akin to any number of restaurant/bar themed games involve running dishes to customers. But unlike Moonlighter, there's still a lot of almost manic charm to Dave the Diver. There are a lot of systems and game mechanics to interact with but it never feels really hectic.

There are some rough spots with some mechanics really not well explained, mostly in the realm of the restaurant and what some of the stats on the staff you can (thankfully) hire mean, but so far it's generally been an extremely smooth and relaxing experience even if I've had to google things a few times. Different fish/plants live at different depths but you can't access that info in game in the middle of a dive. Also, any chef of worth should know that you don't serve shark with the skin still on due to how tough it is and frying it would only make it worse.

    But overall, it's highly recommended.

This is a feature that gets unlocked at a certain point. It's very stupid that you don't have access to it for like... hours. The overly-slow drip-feed of these mechanics is one major flaw in the game.

Good lord. I played about an hour of HL: ALYX (hadn't had a chance to get to it after grabbing it the day I got the OQ2) and now have to get a friend something else as a gift. Because I'm keeping this thing. Holy. Frijoles. Like I didn't even do anything (I got to the jump down in the quarantine after catching the ammo from Russel, which apperantly is a thing - got a 'cheevo - but was just the natural thing to do in the moment that I wasn't even looking to get rewarded for) but was just blown away by the effort that went into making this FEEL like a true YOU ARE THE CHARACTER experience. Other than some wonkiness (and the fact that you are Alyx, who sounds a lot like Julianna from DL) this is easily the best performing and immersive VR experience so far; I played a little of MYST at lunch and that one is good too (I like being able to read the books in the game), but this game is just on a whole 'nother level of immersion and fidelity. That elevator "scene" early on (I can't be the only one who had their hands up the entire time) and talking to Russel in his apartment. . .just excellent.

Also decided to check out and see if the Quest could reach into the basement with Airlink as we've got a ton more space down there and it does. Having more space to actually move around naturally in the world (with some manual "movement" adjustments with the controller) just makes the thing feel so much nicer to move in, and made all those little moments in the intro (this tripod looking thing stomping through out of nowhere, walking over to the window to greet your friend, and all the other little things they put in the world for no other reason than for you to try and interact with it) so much more impactful. And I haven't even shot at a single enemy yet! An added bonus is that the AC unit is in the basement and it is the coldest place in the house so no headsweat. Only issue is battery life, but with the powerbank I got for the SD that's an easy fix (just need an armband or something).

. . .overall the experience was just fun. What I'm really looking for, is someone to do an escape room or Myst like game with the level of fidelity in ALYX, though that might not be something a non-Valve company can commit resources to.

Would a John Wick VR game technically be in the escape room genre? Because clips like this from Bonelab mods have me doing back of the envelope math on the size space I could clear for roomscale VR.

Spoilered for violence, but the thumbnail makes it look far more gruesome than it actually is:

I expect you to die is probably the best VR escape room series, but it's very heavily stylized. If you want higher production values, there's the room, but it's a bit janky and the puzzles aren't as good. Also, I guess if you want something myst-like there is myst VR

I don't remember the name of the game (it was some sort of multiplayer shooter), but the absolute best VR gameplay clip I ever saw was where one player ran up to another one, hit the mag release on the other player's rifle, and then grabbed the charging handle and ejected the chambered round.

Imagine being in a gunfight with someone and they just run up to you and unload your rifle while you're still holding it.

Yeah I got MYST VR and I thought that might be a lunch break game, small little bites as I'm sure it's not going to take long for me to run into a puzzle roadblock. That game is definitely second best VR game I've sampled so far (after ALYX), but I might have to put it aside as I screw myself up with CYAN games and interrupting them (I've started OBDUCTION like 3 times because I keep forgetting where I am in a puzzle and what is outstanding to do) and I know I'm not going to play this continuously.

. . .and thank goodness I remembered there was a sale as I was going to wait to finish ALYX before picking up any other VR games; I'm grabbing VERTIGO Remastered (folks say its short and if you like it you'll dig the sequel which is a direct sequel), INTO THE RADIUS (this one I'm not so sure about as I'm not trying to, before really getting comfortable with the VR space and "sealegs" do some jumpscare tense stuff and some reviews are suggesting this is that - like STEAM recommended THE FOREST VR and I was like "Yeah, I played that in non-VR and never went out at nighttime. . .no thanks") and BLADE AND SORCERY (looks like it is close to 1.0 release). I refunded BEAT SABER - for some reason I remember that game being way cooler. Visually it just isn't that impressive either.

I also was going to hold off on IEYTD as some folks were mentioning the length is really short. . .BUT! It has a sequel (and a threequel if the STEAM page is to be believed) and for 20 bucks you get about 8HRS of what they are calling an escape room game; passing on THE ROOM as apparently, while it looks as good as the regular version of the game, its not as immersive, which is a damn shame (if they could put their puzzles into something like ALYX).

I spent like ten minutes on this balcony before moving on. When the pen actually worked (I didn't think it would). . .I'm sure I had the hugest grin on my face. There's so much in just the first section of the game that just works exactly as you expect things to work in a VR game, and something tells me that was the point (like the "Find something that represents us. . ." scene).

SHOTGUN KING is fantastic and has some excellent "trash" writing (there's like a tiny bit of lore but the writing for it is so comically bad its definitely intentional given the polish around the other parts of the game).
