It's....complicated/tragic. A horrible thing happened to him, and he poured all his effort into revenge, leading to a state-wide policy that has caused a great deal more anguish (3 minor nonviolent crimes causing like....life imprisonment).
It's bad, much in the same vein as 14 year or "super predators" bad.
Man the phrasing on this quote here really gave me a different idea of what happened than when I clicked through and read.

i guess he was in high security with other sex offenders, which is a common practice since the particularly egregious ones tend to get stabbed in regular prisons.

Having talked to people that worked in corrections - over 90% of inmates hate the people that are in there for messing with kids, and of those 90%, An Amount of them are willing to kill or maim them. It's also not that difficult for the inmates to find out information about why people are in there, as those records are mostly public, and visitation being what it is...

To be fair, I suspect Reagan being the actor he is would shift with the party, and was simply as right as he felt he could get away with without turning off enough people.
He had to moderate given the country was still coming down from democrat congressional control and the few decades of actual progressivism
