What the fuck? I hear these isolated stories from people of NES or SNES games costing $70, and my only reaction is "your toy stores fucking sucked". Toys R Us sold games for $50 (sometimes cheaper if they were bad), KB sold everything for about 20% more than Toys R Us, and my local Fred Meyer (basically like a Target) was competitive with Toys R Us. Were some of these price hikes regional or just dicky stores or what? Like all data I can find has games MSRPing for $50 or less until well into the aughts.

I don’t know and I’m pretty sure it’s the only game I ever bought that cost that much too
I remember my dad buying me Chrono Trigger at Toys R Us and it was like $80
All taking the slip of paper for the game from the wall of plastic sleeves up to the register, then handing over SO MUCH MONEY holy shit I have like multiple 20 dollar bills, I must be a millionaire, then getting that sweet sweet plastic wrapped box, with an actual instruction booklet inside, then that torturous ride home where you could look at this game, this magic treasure in your possession, and do nothing with it.
I am awake at 6:30 am having spent the last 7 hours in bed with the worst night of restless leg in my life. At no point over that 7 hours could I get my right knee to not feel like "hey, you should really hyperextend me to relieve this" only to have no amount do anything to said feeling. It's the fucking worst. Like having an intense craving for orange juice, but in your knee.
Stretch both legs (but not too much or I'll pull a hamstring while I'm laying), roll to my other side, fluff the top pillow, sandwich other hand precisely between pillows and just underneath my head (but not too much or it'll fall asleep), hyperextend other knee into my chest
Repeat every five to twenty minutes for two to four hours every single night for the rest of my life
I realized a few months ago that I hadn't gotten restless legs in awhile (or restless lower back which is just the worst). I think that change coincides with us getting a sweet new memory foam mattress. Worth checking it maybe?

oh yeah the ADV Rider guys I'm on about are literally in like their 70s or 80s and have frequently been spending their retired life doing more miles in a year than I've done in five, not to mention probably riding longer than I've been able to walk

Back in the day when things came on cartridges, the bigger the game, the more memory on the cart they had to include, thus raising the price to manufacture. So big, long RPGs tended to be more expensive than platformers or the like, because they had to include bigger storage on the cart.
Also stuff like the Super FX chip, which was basically a little graphics chip that was IN THE CART rather than in the console itself. Stuff like that could inflate the price as well.
With the transition to CDs, manufacturing became more uniform (you just print more discs, which were cheap, than include expensive chips) so prices became more related to budgets and marketing.

Anyone else think this thread was maybe about Synthetic Orange's birthday or something.
I feel like I got in a bunch of petty slap fights with Synthetic Orange when I was a dumbass 16-y/o in my early days on here (but then I did that with a lot of forumers back then)
but I do hope that weirdo is doing well wherever they are
I remember when I would always defend Nintendo’s decision to stick with cartridges.
I was an idiot.
There were pros and cons. CD's were probably better in the long run, but good lord those early CD load times sucked ass.
yeah this is why the Chrono Trigger PS1 edition is so bad, the cartridge really could just blast the game directly to the console in a way that CDs never could catch up with
it's funny that with digital installation to SSDs, we've only finally come back around to that kind of instant loading as an option in cutting-edge video game design (and even then it's only taken for granted on like, PS5 exclusives)
My friend has a younger brother who recently graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and landed a job in the r&d department at a self driving car startup, where he designs boxes that other engineers can put things in.
I have no complaints about this. Well i have some, due to my thoughts on autononous cars, but theyre tangential. Box design is a noble profession. Square things are important in today's society.
My complaint is that he thinks we do (at heart) the same job. And he always asks me how my work is going and then nods along with "ah yes, research, it's a funny old game, right?"
This is so weird to me because I have this calcified mental framework that (new release/“big name”) SNES and N64 games always cost $50. (And Tiger Handheld games cost $20.)
And I’ve got specific memories of buying stuff like SMW2 Yoshi’s Island and having exactly $50 to be able to get it (my dad paid the tax).
Or when I wanted to buy Mario Kart 64, I only had $45 but I didn’t want it to sell out at Kmart… so I put a copy on layaway for the week it would take me to earn the rest I needed. (Which in retrospect was simultaneously wasting the money I’d put on a layaway fee, but also I was set on getting this game and could not have handled it selling out)
I joined this forum when I was 80 and today I'm over 115 years young thanks to a shot of vinegar on the hour every hour
Actually a real trick I have for continuing to feel young is that I had pretty rough chronic pain in college, like horrendous foot cramping and pain whenever I walked anywhere. Turns out my hamstrings were like 1000% tighter than they should be and I've since managed to undo that pretty well. So now I feel like Benjamin Button whenever I walk somewhere!

the first videogame I ever bought for myself was Morrowind: Game of the Year edition, at a Gamestop next to the Supercuts I'd get my shitty little kid haircuts at
it was also the videogame that made me upgrade my computer for the first time, because my rig just could not handle it

Weird how I'm now too old to be "young" but simultaneously not old enough to be considered a real adult by the antediluvian vampires that are sucking our world dry of blood while the sky burns around us.
I had to explain to people what Starsiege: Tribes was like to people a couple times recently, and I am pretty sure I developed some liver spots describing LPBs.
As the years pass, I find myself enjoying more and more Big Dog t-shirts. Is it ironic enjoyment? I sure as hell hope so

I'm in this weird limbo where I feel old because I remember cassettes, and only 4 channels on TV, and phone books, and my fingers are numb when I wake up most mornings, hangovers are awful, and I don't understand tiktok. But I also still feel like a kid because I've never had a career or my own proper home. Add on the Peter Pan effect of being trans and feeling like you never got to grow up, and being a trans guy specifically so everyone thinks I'm 15 years younger than I am. Feels weird.

Tribes! We set up a LAN in my Technology class my senior year and played a shit load of Tribes
I remember visiting a fancy mall in downtown San Francisco once in the 00s to see a movie, then checking out an arcade afterwards and they had a room full of what I think were Starsiege machines set up like arcade machines and networked together.
Or it might have been Starsiege Tribes, or some other game entirely and my memory is playing tricks on me.
