the most important thing i find with to do lists is to have them somewhere easily editable (aka your phone or a notebook)

there's no point in thinking of something that you've forgotten about again you've gotten to your list because you forget most of the shit you think about

i always think of the mitch hedberg line about joke writing
I write jokes for a living, I sit at my hotel at night, I think of something that's funny, then I go get a pen and I write it down. Or if the pen is too far away, I have to convince myself that what I thought of ain't funny.

Hello landlords, please sign up for my new service, Colludify.

With Colludify's price fixing guarantee, we will automatically set the prices on not just your property, but most of the properties around you as well, leaving your prey nowhere to run.

With Colludify, you will squeeze every last drop from your tenants, until they're desiccated husks forced into homelessness at the end of each rental period. But don't worry, our auto-listing service will help you find your next victim too!

This is stressed to me a lot by the time management book I try to follow. Yet I find having a pad and pencil near me at all times was.. well, I wouldn't use it like I should. My phone isn't great for it either because I hate typing on that keyboard. I use Obsidian on my work PC, but I haven't tried just adding a generic task list to it before now.

i guess my input here wrt to the phone is "get over it"

you shouldn't need to type much for a to do list, a sentence or two

maybe try something like simplenotes that'll sync between windows and your phone if you want to actually do a proper writeup when you get to a keyboard but you're overthinking it if the ergonomics of typing on a phone is interfering with your list making

I recognize this. :) Like what I think I'm really trying to do is build a backlog, then decide what to work on from that. Getting over it is the story of my life.

Also obsessing over finding the right productivity and organizational tools is very classic avoidant behavior, and at some point you have to cut yourself off and just use something simple and accessible that you already have.

I admit that I am bad at documenting stuff now but when I was in the office I used a mix of paper and color coded google keep.

Now its mostly using our jira board for big things, and then notes.

Writing things is how I remember to do them anyway.

I write my lists on the notes app on my phone for personal things that will take weeks, a sheet of printer paper for like a big chunky task that might take a day or two at work, or on my whiteboard at work for big long visionary plans where I have some momentary clarity on the task as a whole and I don't want to lose track of any of the moving parts.

@Fuzzy Cumulonimbus Cloud My job involves a ton of technical writing but it is very clear to me that the technical writing serves to clarify my thinking and understanding and to enable me to make funding recommendations, and/or set sensible requirements.

Some of the writing feels stilted and formulaic but handing it over to an LLM would be a disaster for us because bypassing the writing process would cause us to bypass *thinking*, and we would make worse decisions as a result.

I have found chatGPT useful in trying to figure out certain technologies, like when I just needed to ask it so many questions about certain optical techniques cause I was starting from zero there and all the reviews I was reading were either too technical or skimmed over the details and focused on applications. However my role as a writer was not to summarize the technique, it was to make a recommendation about which parts of a novel program were good and feasible and which parts were risky (but ok) and risky (but bad and should be changed). An LLM might be able to make that recommendation but I don’t think we wish to let it make that recommendation and it obviously wouldn’t reflect our personal idiosyncratic priorities, which is what we are being asked as experts to bring to the table

(relatedly NIH people have been asked not to use LLMs in reviews lol)

Everyone at work (my boss) wants me to use jira for my plans and task lists and it's so awful I think I might die if I tried.

I will only use jira for this shit when forced and cornered in a planning meeting.
