I called her this morning to make sure she was okay. She found out about 30 minutes ago. According to her, he was in the hospital last year, seemed to be doing better, went out for a couple shows in the spring, then canceled later ones and has barely been heard from since. She suspects cancer.
She commented on how he never really got the recognition he deserved for being a great songwriter, never getting Kennedy center honors or into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. I wonder if his fans being the way they are influenced that.
Personally? I've barely listened to his stuff... but I will always associate him with her. And that means something.

I think he doesn't get recognition for being a skilled songwriter because his biggest hits sound like novelty songs compared to a lot of the rest of his stuff.

He's a huge fan. When I moved out, his going away gift to me was his record collection (he had just gotten rid of his record player), including his six buffett albums.
