Simple program to log network activity

My internet connection is being pretty shitty, and I just wanted to get an idea as to how shitty it is being. Is there some kind of simple program that will log all the activity on my connection, such as when it goes down, how long it was down for, that sort of thing?

I'm in no need of any more features than that, so any suggestions of programs that offer a lot of complicated abilities will probably be lost on me.

Packet capture or just general how much data is being transferred?

Wireshark will capture data being transferred, it's a packet capture program.

There is a program that can measure general network usage like ports used, activity etc. I can't remember it off the top of my head, it's commercial I think.

Even simpler than that. I just want to see when it's online and when it's offline (Because sometimes my connection just cuts out and I can't use the internet). I'd simply like to know how often it's going offline and for how long each time. I don't know the best way to tell that (Is it packet loss?) but I think that the majority of programs out there log way too much information for me to handle, when I want something so simple.

Well, you could open a command prompt window and type:

    ping -t www.bbc.co.uk

And see when you get packet loss etc. Course, you'd have to be sitting infront of it and note down the time whenever you have packet loss.

What I'd do is get a network monitoring program and then set your computer to ping google at minute intervals. Not sure which programs to use as I haven't had to do this, but thats what I'd set up

I think I know what you want this for. I had an unreliable cable ISP for a couple of years and it would drive me insane. I wanted to document the service's availability as a way of arguing for refunds to my bill. I can't remember what I used, I think it was Ping Plotter.
