    13 is actually my family's lucky number. I don't know exactly why my dad and sister chose it, but I distinctly remember why I did.

    Friday the 13th and we're at the pool. I'm young, probably five or six at most. I want a coke but can't find my parents or they don't want to give me the money. I am staring at the coke machine with my sister. I hit the grapico button out of desperation.

    One comes out.

    I hit it again, nothing happens.

    Someone else got their money eaten by the machine and I got their drink. This is fortune distilled into its purest form: a child getting a no-strings-attached sugary beverage.

    And thus 13 became my lucky number.
