I saw a fun combo earlier with All Will Be One and The Millennium Calendar and I love it.

That certainly seems like it might be a faster kill than building up to 1000 counters.

By combo you just mean having both in play ever right? That'll kill fast for sure.

Pretty much, if you get them both in play you're gonna be doing a shit ton of damage to your opponent real fast.

I snagged the Paradox Power (12th and 13th Doctors) commander deck this week for $35, which I felt was quite a steal. I think this one actually operates better than the others.

I've only played one game with it, it generated a big mana pool right away, and then I was suddenly cascading and taking extra upkeeps and doing all sorts of shit. I also got both 12 and 13 on the board early and so I was able to play like 20-25 mana worth of spells on turn 6.

Played Timey Wimey again, but I used 11 and Amy Pond as commanders this time. That's a fun combo, doesn't seem to do much, but it sneaks up on you. Eventually I had a bunch of 3/2's and 2/2's on the board and 11 lets you pay 2 colorless to make a power of 3 or less unblockable, so, I started hitting my opponents with 28 unblockable damage.

EDIT: Oh also I already miss the Extra Life event, those decks were fun to play with and I love smashing precons against each other like that.

Hell yeah. Extra Life was a great format. I didn't face anyone else running GB, so I don't know if the system avoided mirrors or no one else figured out that deck slapped as hard as it did.

Also helps me save gold until either the dog shit eldraine or all will be one limited formats shift.

The mode avoided mirrors, and GB absolutely seemed the best in terms of needing fewer pieces to work, having tons of interaction and ramp, and a ton of haymakers, and draw in the command zone also felt critical in the format.

Avoiding mirrors was probably implemented specifically because BW lifegain was a deck.

I liked the BR deck the most but I really loathed playing against GW. All those fucking planeswalkers and their planeswalker bullshit was a real pain in the ass.

So I'm definitely getting the vamps for ixalan, but trying to decide what deck my son would like. I mean dinosaurs seems like the clear answer, but I haven't seen a ton of preview information about that deck other than a listing on goldfish. Was reaction to the list...good?

Anyway, anybody have any fun/exciting brews for the no-bans event? Oko + Prime Time + Field and Turns are both pretty solid but maybe a little bit boring to pilot, especially with the lack of utility lands or insane lines that Modern Titan has.

E: Also it is extremely depressing playing No Bans, All Access and opponents just coming in with 250 card piles or draft chaff decks.

I wouldn't say I noticed necessarily any criticism, but I would say that for an enfranchised player, it's kind of just a pretty traditional Naya Ramp Into Big Fatties deck, with a dinosaur flavour. I've seen the play pattern here before and I don't feel particularly surprised by anything. It's a strategy that a lot of people like and they supported it. For a kid who presumably does not have my jaded gamer heart, this'll probably all be cool new stuff, and they say "dinosaur" on them.

I wouldn't say any of them do anything especially uncommon. You've got a naya ramp deck, a simic lands/counters deck, an orzhov aristocrats deck, and a grixis reanimator deck, all with creature type synergies. Although there's some really good cards for adjacent strategies in some of them (the vampire deck for instance also has good lifegain synergies with all the 1/1 lifelinkers it can dump onto the board). Still, there's nothing wrong with what works, and dinosaurs can do some really, really stupid things (Anyone who's ever seen Gishath get through for 6+ knows how fast that deteriorates)

Man I just could not make a rat deck work this set. It seemed so fun but I was clearly missing something that made it click.

LOTR scry decks are terrifying when they ramp correctly.

I kept modifying my rat deck throughout this set because I kept finding things that wouldn't give enough oomph or weren't as good as I initially thought.

But I'm still climbing each month to about Plat 3 or 4 with it, and that's through very casual play. But I also play Standard.

I like it a lot! I'm looking forward to watching my favorite streamers draft it and see how the limited environment plays out.

Yeah, I'm excited for the combination of a lot of little solid role player cards that might make lists (1 mana green explore dude!), some potential for the stuff that flips into lands, and Discover doing some dumb shit or value shit or dumb value shit

Planeswalker decks were by and large seen as a failure and are probably never coming back, if that's what you're asking.

  • BahamutZEROBahamutZERO Registered User regular
Did they call preconstructed decks planeswalker decks for a while? I don't check in on this shit more than once or twice a decade so I'm just confused old person wandering around, getting startled by unfamiliar fonts. What I'm asking is are there any preconstructed decks that are for the... old and busted magic format I guess? The one where you can have 4 copies of a card in the deck and there's no special legendary creature you can cast at any time?

They still make those but they’re called “Challenger decks” and they’re designed to be kind of like an intro to a constructed format for Standard or Pioneer.

The last set came out in 2022 but they seem to still be available online.

Or if you just want any preconstructed 60 card decks, there's starter kits that come with two decks.

Digging around, it looks like the set based Theme decks were replaced with Planeswalker decks in Kaladesh, and those ended in favor of Commander decks in Zendikar Rising.

  • BahamutZEROBahamutZERO Registered User regular
All the way back then?! Huh, I guess I just assumed they were still doing normal precons for expansions, I think the last time I actually looked for them was during the ravnica 2 block.

  • milskimilski Poyo! Registered User regular
The theme/Planeswalker decks had a lot of problems, but the biggest one is the inherent contradiction between needing a product to suck so that it isn't scalped or accidentally disruptive to a competitive environment and needing the product to actually be exciting to new players who don't want to immediately realize they bought a pile of boring crap.

The planeswalker focus was an attempt to make them more exciting with a flashy card type with a face character and reasonable consistency from the custom tutors, but that still failed, and Commander decks sidestepped all those issues because they can reprint a lot more exciting cards and make newer exciting cards that are a lot easier to make bad enough it doesn't get scalped but still fun for the very broad power band commander tends to be played at.

I think my thing with the set commander decks nowadays is that the Universes Beyond decks are so, so much better nowadays that I see little reason to buy other precons.

  • milskimilski Poyo! Registered User regular
Yeah, the UB precons getting entirely new art and a huge creative budget for new cards with an already resonant flavor makes them way, way better at feeling like a premium product than even the high end commander decks with barely any new art, new cards, or needed reprints.

    I ate an engineer
  • NobodyNobody Registered User regular
The main advantage to the set Commander decks is you can usually pick them up on a budget. I think I got my Witherbloom precon for something like $20? While UB decks are at least double that.

Usually, yeah. The 40K decks, in particular, are still bonkers expensive. The Doctor Who decks, by comparison, are very cheap. Grabbed one of them for $35.

Depends on the 40k deck. Necrons? Absolutely still expensive with like an $80 minimum, but I would contend that deck is stronger and more consistent in play than the Commander Masters precons that are over $100.

But, if you don't like mono-black or artifacts, the other 40k decks you can find from like $45-$60 bucks and are still fairly potent and well designed. Worth the premium price I'd say.

In a similar vein to "WotC is bad but people's criticisms of why are often stupid", the Commander Banlist is inconsistent and weird but the complaints about it are completely insane, just a bunch of people who hate the idea of a card being banned so much they ignore everything else.

Like, yeah, Iona sucks in cEDH and against 90% of decks, sure, but that doesn't mean that going back to the days of the one mono-color player being locked out while everybody else plays Magic are a good thing, and "just run Duplicant and All is Dust in every monocolor deck" was dumb in 2012 and is just deranged in 2023.

E: More broadly, most of the "does nothing except end games with a wet fart or creates a miserable experience" bans make a degree of sense with their banlist goals, even if those cards are very bad and worse than other "I win" cards.

And originally they banned Painter's Servant instead of Iona. You will note that nobody really plays Painter's Servant outside of a couple specific commanders (It's very good for Oona, it's a two-card infinite mill with Grindstone, etc).

I have a few cards I really think should be banned that aren't (Seedborn Muse isn't Prophet of Kruphix but it sure does feel like they're taking a new turn on everyone's turn with it still any time it shows up), but aside from bringing back banned as commander (/companion. Lutri would be fine in the 99) I wouldn't really remove anything on the list I think.

There are still a few brain scratchers on the Commander ban list, I feel, and there's a whole lot of cards I think should be swapped in if those are removed to prevent them from becoming immediately broken. Like, Panoptic Mirror is a sick card! It can do all kinds of fun and/or goofy shit. But as long as Time Warp and the 15 cards that do that are legal in the format, we can't have our cool artifact. But, somehow, the response was to ban Panoptic Mirror instead of the cards people find irritating to begin with.
