That's almost certainly how the ancient Sumerians and Babylonians counted! You count to 12 by tapping your thumb against your finger joints on one hand and then you use the fingers of the other hand to keep track when you hit 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60. That system is also why our seconds, minutes, and hours are sexagesimal instead of base 10.

I learned this a few months ago and when I thought about it my brain went "Yeah. . . OH YEAH THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE."

Today I learned that the Xbox 360 wired explorer is the best guitar to use for Clone Hero.

But they cost like $100+ now.

    Dumb

I had to pay 60 bucks for just the wireless adapter for my old ps3 fender rock band controller before clone hero even got to 1.0

TIL that Netflix will only display 4K or 1080p content on their app and Microsoft Edge. The rest can only stream up to 720p. I therefore also discovered the source of the artifacting in Dune Part 1 when I watched it just before it got rotated out.

    I did not know this.
This sent me down a rabbit hole, it's even more complicated it seems.

First, most Netflix produced and foreign content, and some tv shows displays in the correct resolution.
But most Hollywood movies don't. This appears to be due to their standard contract for movies having a HDCP 2.2 clause

On Windows only Edge supports this, on Mac only Safari or the Native app. The thing that other browsers can never be sure about apparently is if there's anything capturing the screen.
On Windows, all monitors and all cables need to be HDCP 2.2 compliant for this to work. Not just the one you're watching on.
And here's what seems to be the kicker: There doesn't seem to be an easy software tool to test what part is failing. Nvidia only tells you if your setup is HDCP compliant, but doesn't give a version number. What little forum posts I found suggest hooking up a chromecast running the Netflix app as a troubleshooter. (Because then there's no cables, only the screen directly into a HDMI port)
I found out that indeed, Baby Driver was in 720p (With the zany keyboard combo ctrl-shift-alt-D), but even though I believe my monitor, hooked up tv are both compliant, apparently something is failing. It may be the HDMI cable to the TV, which is from 2015 while the standard was upgraded in 2014..... or it may be that something is plugged into the wrong port.... I hate hardware puzzles. And it sure makes the high seas more interesting....

And Prime Video apparently doesn't care about this, so it doesn't seem something that is ironclad by the studios. Though Prime Video will only go to 1080p in full-screen mode.

    Wait

The pentatonic major and minor scales are the exact same shape just with the roots in different places? What the fuck.

Wait does it work the same way for the regular major and minor scales?

Does this mean I have way less shapes to memorize than I thought?

A Minor is the same scale as C Major, just shifted down a couple steps.

    Welcome to modes.

You can start on any note of a major scale and get 7 different modes. Ionian (major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian (natural minor), and Locrian.

You can also think of them as a major or minor scales with modifications.

    Lydian is major #4

    Mixolydian is major b7

    Dorian is minor #6

    Phrygian is minor b2

Locrian is minor b2 and b5, giving it a diminished tonality.

American's don't use the phrase "choc chip" :open_mouth:

  • chromdomchromdom Who? Where?Registered User regular
    It's true, we don't.
I kinda think the abbreviation has to be able to stand on its own, and choc doesn't.
People might know what you're talking about, but no one would it's a good shortcut.

  • tynictynic PICNIC BADASS Registered User, ClubPA regular
Australians use choc for chocolate all the time. Somehow we manage.

  • ChicoBlueChicoBlue Registered User regular
Yeah, but Americans love to eat chalk so it's confusing for them to get chocolate when they ask for chalk that they love to eat.

  • chromdomchromdom Who? Where?Registered User regular

I just said "choc chip" a bunch of times in a variety of terrible accents while doing the dishes, and I think Americans are bad at ending syllables with a hard C. At least in my accent, it's hard to get a crisp separation between the end of "choc" and the start of "chip." Kinda mushes together. I can feel what you're going for when I start pronouncing everything closer to the front of my mouth, though.
