    I'll ask. Who is that?

The Game Awards were extremely aggressive about cutting award speeches short because they ran so long last year. This culminated in Larian forgetting to announce Baldur’s Gate 3 launching on Xbox because they were told to wrap it up after honoring the people who died before they could see Larian win the award.

There there was quite a bit of drama and controversy this year about The Game Awards. Them rushing Larian off the stage while they were honoring their lost teammates, even if they did go over time.

Additionally, Christopher Judge made a pretty cutting remark about how his acceptance speech at last year's TGA was longer than the newest CoD campaign. The CoD devs actually got pretty upset about it and hit back at him on Twitter with some pretty lame replies about how their games sell more than his do. The whole thing was pretty childish on both sides. He shouldn't have said it, and they shouldn't have attacked back with equally childish replies.

Anyway, the whole awards show was basically the same as it always is. A bunch of cringe, with a ton of corporate pandering because that's how they make their money. The show is not really even about honoring the nominees and award winners. The show is about driving the marketing machine forward.

Pfft. Why shouldn't he have? If the CoD devs don't want people making jokes about their games, perhaps they should quit making their games a joke.

There were awards at the advertisement show?

Edit: to be clear, imo, its a Game awards show, they should probably spend the Majority of the time to the announcement of the award and the speech by the winners, especially at the last goty part when times not really limited

    No.

Ah so it's just a stage hand telling them to stop at this sensitive moment.

Thought it was maybe a Rick Roll.

I mean that’s the point. They are no doubt paid to broadcast the world premieres, so it’s an advertisement platform first and an award show as a distant second.

I mean people watch for the ads for the most part. If you seperated them the awards show would just have that one guy who gets overly invested in the oscars telling you about who won, and everyone else talking about the latest trailer.

Even then this year seemed to have kind of mid trailers? Only real wow moment was Monster Hunter and that shits 2 years away.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

The absence of E3 meant people leaning on TGA to fill that gap, and fill it they did.

If only there was some advertising platform other than a games awards show.

That's not a stage hand, but its the TGA guy: Geoff Keighley. He's famous among people who follow video gaming news.

As usual, Tycho's accompanying post is almost entirely opaque to those who don't already know what he's talking about.

Really? He says there is an event called The Game Awards, and then proceeds to describe what those events were like for those who didn't watch them.

I assumed the venn diagram between people who read Penny Arcade and people who are at least aware of TGA is a circle but apparently not.

The newspost isn't supposed to be actual news. It's comedy and editorializing, not journalism.

Yeah, I got the basic gist, but the details are hard to parse without context. For example:
I can't look at this smug goon mugging with puppets, and I can't tolerate how this goblin merely stands adjacent to incredible work, and some measure of that talent - that light - somehow accrues to him.

Are we talking about literal puppets, or figurative ones? And is the smug goon the same person as the goblin (presumably at least one of them is Keighley)?

Still, I did reread it and it makes more sense this morning. Maybe I've conditioned myself to skim his posts because I don't get so many of the references.

    Literal puppets.

Keighley spent several minutes doing shtick with Gonzo of the Muppets, which is kind of galling given how little time his show gave the acceptance speeches.

While I often agree that Jerry doesn't always mange to communicate with me in the newspost. In this case, I a person who has never watched a single second of a The Game Awards show knew exactly what he was talking about.

I could guess the general idea of what went on from the combination of the comic and Tycho's post, but i only got what exactly happened by reading this very thread.
I assumed he was talking metaphorical puppets, though.
Not the most opaque post he has made, overall.
