Controller for Steam Link App?

ZythonZython Registered User regular
So I've been using some holiday money to update my PC and living room area. One thing I want to finish setting up is couch PC gaming. For that, I have the following setup:

-A Sony Bravia TV with the Steam Link App (Wired ethernet connection to my router)
-A PC in an upstairs room (Also wired ethernet connection to my router)
-A PS5 and Switch in the TV room and a USB-c charging dock for controllers (tangentially relevant)

Given this setup, what would be a good PC controller to use? Which one would make the most use of the features it comes with (haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, etc)? I have a spare Dualshock 4 I can use, but I'm willing to upgrade to something better.

How does the steam link app handle controllers? Do you bluetooth connect them to the TV itself? I find PS4 controllers work well for PC games with controller support, though I cannot get them to connect to my PC via bluetooth for shit, I have to use USB, but from a quick search it sounds like this is not a universal problem and I just have a cursed PC. Perhaps dualshock 5 controllers' bluetooth works better.

It connects via TV’s BT, yes. I’ve got a physical Steam Link, but my den TV can get the app, so no point in it there.

I can try out my DS4 and Dualsense to see how they work, but I’m curious about the XBox controller since I don’t have one and I’ve heard they’re preferred for PC gaming.

They are preferred mainly because they're more natively supported by windows, DS4/dualsense do work though and work about equally with xbox controllers if you're using steam and its built in better controller support.

Steam can also work with switch pro controllers.

After some playing around with Steam Link and Moonlight, I decided to buy an XBox controller. While some of the games tested worked great with my DS4, others had issues (notably Tales of Arise who kept telling me to press the trackpad to continue, but would change prompts when done so).
