Hearing "it still has charm and jokes" is the big relief for me
I have significant beef with 16 because of how much it hates women, but even beyond that, lord that game is just so po-faced.
it's still so baffling to me because the initial pitch to the fans was "okay things have been kind of a mess around here lately, but we've got the FF14 guys making this one, and you all love FF14!"
and like, there is a lot about FF14 that you can criticize, but I would never call it dour
it's generally light-hearted, often goofy even, and utterly full to the tits with optional side content
and then FF16 apparently wound up being exactly the opposite of that???
the misogyny is consistent, though. that part wasn't a surprise

I lot of people (self included) thought when FFXVI was announced and the Creative Business Unit III logo showed up that Shadowbringers and Endwalker writer Natsuko Ishikawa would be penning the script. Not so! Turns out that A Realm Reborn and Heavenward writer Kazutoyo Maehiro was the head writer on the game and I'm not a fan!

A friend and I once spent a party in college trying to operate a lighter and then subsequently a book of matches with our feet
Were the matches chosen because you had given up on the lighter and needed something easier, or because you had mastered the lighter and needed a new challenge?

As well the blatantly unsubtle implication of what the bandits were about to do to Benedikta.
.... And the whole plot point of Barnabas sending Benedikta's head in a box to Hugo in order to enrage him.
You know it's a good name when the game's developers have to explain how it's supposed to be read
(Also it's finally coming out in 2025, with playtests later this year)
Benedikta was my favourite and most interesting character and Hugo was really compelling too. So of course they arent utilised at all and instead the entire last half of the game focusses on the most anime of anime antagonists barnabas. You know whats really compelling, a haughty bad guy who spends every over indulged line he has explaining how everything youre doing is part of his plan, and how unaffected he is and bored. By the end I was begging for death rather than listen to that character say another word
I enjoyed the first half of the game but man the second half was just a trudging slodge of anime nothing
I need to make Rebirth my last game i buy full price this year (except maybe space marine 2 at the end of the year), I buy way too many full priced games and ive got a backlog a mile long. I need to cut down on sales as well "But what if i feel like playing it and its not on sale!" then play the other 200 games you bought for the same reason prohass you prick, youre costing me a fortune

And honestly, I liked a lot of the anime bullshit! R3+L3 to Accept the Truth was fucking incredible.
I'm assuming it's meant to read "Two times K.O" or just "2X K.O" but yeah....
Big ol swing and miss on the name there going by the reaction everywhere. The gameplay and art itself looks amazing, those are some fantastic visuals - Iloai especially.
Gonna be interesting to see if they walk the name back or what

I've had a hankering for a Mon game lately so I'm deep into Nexomon Extinction. It's the second in the series but I in this case I care more about an improved sequel rather than getting the call-backs. The most important thing is that the mons are cool and the combat is quick, with some nice features like level scaling and the Pokedex just telling you when a mon evolves.
It does lack explanations for the elemental table (it follows some Pokemon logic, but subverts it in other ways, like Ghost being good against Normal) and status effects, Cassette Beasts solved this issue by explaining this stuff the first time it happened, and modern Pokemon at least tells you whether move is effective or not after facing Pokemon you've seen before.
My biggest knock is that the writing is pretty lame upfront - a ton of obvious jokes about the genre and fourth wall breaking "the developers of this game must have been on a tight budget", plus the tone is cynical early on (stuff like the move relearner being awful to you for no reason). But, the cynicism does come from the state of the world (it is subtitled Extinction after all) and once you save a town your reputation skyrockets, and there's more hope and sincerity, even if the other elements don't disappear.
Project L is now 2XKO? Thankfully they're not launching until 2025, so there's plenty of time to change the name.
I hope there'll be ways to interact during long combo strings. Having to sit helplessly during 10 seconds of combos or blockstrings is not my definition of fun.

I wish we had a The Mask game, where you could do like looney tunes style finishers and moves but it was violently realistic in other ways, so baddies just got horrifically mangled
im sure there are some games that come close to this vibe, but i want the full deal

There's a Guilty Gear style Burst mechanic where you can spend a resource to break a combo. Granted, it's a very limited resource.
My brother and I tried some MP Zomboid again. We learned about a command to teleport players to each other, so rather than spend hours stumbling around trying to find each other my brother beamed me to the house he was in. I went out the front door and found a group of about ten zombies attacking the car on the drive, panicked and ran. So my brother and I immediately got separated again. Led this horde on a chase around the neighbourhood, then some gunfire happened in the distance and thankfully lured a lot of them away and I was able to double back. Brother had moved to loot the neighbouring house by the point, so I went into the one on the opposite side of his spawn. A bit later he got swarmed and killed. I asked him "So, uh, what house were you in when that happened? I'm just curious how close all those zombies are to me." and he responded "Let me show you." and teleported me to his location, and I was immediately ripped to shreds.
I don't think the two of us are very suited to co-op gaming.

I just can't handle not doing anything during a fighting game. Once the Versus games came out (SFxXMen, MvC2, etc), the combos got longer and longer. I ended up finding myself staring at the clock and watching it tick down by 10-12 seconds while I sit there getting juggled into oblivion.
I gave up on big combo fighting games at that point. Keep it fast and simple, so I can stay engaged. Add air movement (even during juggles), combo breakers, pushblocks, whatever. Just let me play the fucking game.

So I tried "While The Iron's Hot" in GamePass - it's the blacksmithing game.
I'm liking it so far, but I'm pretty miffed because the cover art is neat, but the game itself - retro pixel style, pretty in its own right - has none if it anywhere. So far there's no cutscenes with it, all the dialogue scenes have the portrait sections be of the pixel art instead of the cover art, and there's none in the Codex/library or your status screen. It's not necessary at all gameplay wise, but it's still baffling to me. I feel it's a big waste.
Someone tell me I'm just missing a setting or something, or it'll come up in the future.
Also, another nitpick - like most games, you progress through better and better material as you progress. However, the fact that Iron ore is your first material (which you mine and smelt to make iron bars, and then mold to make other stuff), and the succeeding material after that is Steel ore... it kinda breaks my suspension of disbelief.
We generally don’t talk about things til they’re ready, but as you may have read, we’re making an exception. We’ve been working on a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later in year. We love our modding community and we want to support them. It’s coming.
We have a system but it needs to be tested and still requires work. We’re excited about it. I understand that it suck’s when the game is updated and mods break. Our community teams will start talking with and looping in modding community. For now, work continues
Further info from Discord:
We are working on official mod support, and have been for a while. We want the very best for you, which includes establishing a pipeline that lets mod authors release their mods across different platforms. Together with the platform holders, we are working on making this a reality, and are forming a team to support mod curation. We’re aiming to offer modding support for things like classes, UI, customisation, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics. As this is no small task, we hope to introduce the initial stages of modding support in our next big patch, which is still several months away. Frustrated as you might be now, we’re keen to work with you on this - and have plans to reach out to popular mod authors to talk further and work together to avoid issues in the future.

i don't even mind "Two Times KO" as a name, like it's nonsense but it's kind of nonsense in the way a video game name can be nonsense, and the alliteration of "two times" is a pleasing mouthfeel

Server woes are still there, so I would warn against buying it right now.
Otherwise, it really tries to be a bounded game complexity wise.
There are 5 classes with 3 specializations. These are locked choices, can never change.
Each of them gives you about 12 skills to pick from, of which you pick 5. Those 5 skills each have their own skill tree, where you get 20pts to spend. This you can change, but it takes time to recover the 20pts so a respec will make you weaker
And then every level is a passive point. You respec with gold.
It appears late game you can dip into another subclass to pick up 1 skill to cross over.
So that's a lot of total options but once you make decisions you're pretty committed.
This game does not want you to spend a lot of time in town.
Items sell for very little, and maps are not persistent. If you town portal the map gets deleted with anything on the ground.
It does want loot explosions where much is useless, some has potential, but you are limited by your crafting resources.
Learning where the efficiency there is probably a big skill.
For me right now the game is very easy because I dropped an item that makes my Falcon do 50% more damage, totally outscaling all non-bosses. So it's hard to say how the campaign is without a drop like that.
What really interests me about official mod support for BG3 is how much it'll allow more fully-featured side content, particularly because I don't think there's any way to make a new map. Although if it just allows an easy way to add in spells/classes/etc to the existing story that would still be pretty neat.
Though the fact they highlight changes to game mechanics makes me hope there's a possibility they let you do things like change how many actions people get or something, real base-level stuff.
Also! Solium Infernum is good! More people should get it so we can do an async game!
