Total [Eclipse] of the Heart

zagdrobzagdrob Registered User regular
Eclipses clearly aren't real and can't happen on the back of a turtle and needless to say the media hype is a bunch of cowards.

Anyway, if you do believe in eclipses and are going to see one tomorrow, what's your plans and what are you seeing or experiencing? This is where we argue if it's happening at all, or anything else.

After kiddo goes to school at 7:30 I plan to head south and find a place to park and get good shots of totality. Home is 95%ish but I want to experience this once as an event.

Hey they see Eras tour, I get this.

We live in the path of totality and on top of that our skies will be clear. Our little town is being overrun by tourists. It's massively annoying! The traffic alone, we are not built up enough for this shit

I live in northeast Ohio, so my wife and I are going to sit outside in the backyard and grill during the eclipse. Hotels are filling up like crazy here.

One of our friends that lives in Bellfountain said they are basically a state of emergency, stay home and don't go anywhere. School cancelled, etc.

I will be driving 2 hours north to try and go to a lake. I will likely just end up pulling over in a parking lot, as it's likely any decent public viewing spot will be massively overrun. Still, got my tailgating grill and some eclipse glasses, I'm good to go wherever.

I'll be driving into Ohio, kind of worried about traffic but I figure the interstate should be okay and then country roads / side streets should be okay? Everything leading up to a park will be jammed, but aside from those choke points it's not like the bottleneck to a stadium, since you can just look at it from anywhere?

In 2017, going in was fine, since people trickled in over time.

Going out after, since everyone wanted to leave at once, is where the roads went to shit. A normally four hour drive took well over 12.

There's a big park behind the house, I'll just head out there.
it'll probably be full of mud and the last of the snow, so that'll be grim

We did totality in 2017 in Carbondale, since it's my alma mater. However it was cloudy, so didn't quite get to see the corona. Still really cool and interesting, and a ridiculous drive back. So this time around I'm fine with ~95% and will just take a late lunch and walk down to the river/ lakefront to see what can be seen.

Definitely looking forward to the YA novels set in Carbondale in the future, because there's no way two eclipses in 7 years doesn't get used by some speculative fiction

looks like the next one down here is in July 2028. So middle of Winter with the totality being south Island based.

Looks like I'm going to take the kid to the snow in 4 years.

Totally did the thing like "is that dust on my sensor?" and moved my camera around. Nope, the spot stayed in the same place on the sun

I played with my new filter and I'm not sure I'm gonna get any good photos.

I've heard your first total eclipse is a meditative experience so just don't worry much about pictures and focus on the special moment.

Finding it hilarious that the governor of Arkansas is declaring a state of emergency to deal with the influx of tourists for the eclipse.

I don’t know if it’s funnier that it implies that the government had no clue that this EXTREMELY PREDICTABLE EVENT would occur…

Or that they’ve never dealt with Arkansas being a tourist place.

Personally, while in the path of totality, it’s still iffy if it will be cloudy or not.

I have family who lives in the path of the totality so I just went to visit her. We aren't in the best spot, but by all accounts even a bit further north is getting completely over run. The watch at Vermont's infrastructure crumbles from people fleeing the wrath of the sun god.

I usually leave the office (VA) right around 3pm. That's right in the middle of things, according to maps I'm seeing on google. With the 87% coverage happening at 319p.

I fully expect people to stop in the middle of the road, and/or pull over. Traffic is going to be a mess on the beltway.

So I think I'll stay a little later today, and maybe watch things from the office courtyard.

Governments declare States of Emergency ahead of predicted events all the time? It unlocks powers, authorities, and budgets to deal with the entirely predictable amount of stupidity that is going to happen. Especially drivers.

There’s a billion alerts about “stay the fuck off 71 today” (the highway that basically traverses Cinci to Columbus along the line of totality)

We went to Carbondale for that one as well, but totality shifted enough this time that we don't have to leave our house ( a little west of Cape Girardeau)

And as bad as it's been so far, yeah once it's over? *shudder*. I have to bring my fiancee to work and of course its about 30 minutes after totality so the outflux will likely have begun by then.

It's funny because in Texas there's going to be bad/cloudy weather so no one can see it near it's super UwU path.

BUT, it's all ok, an old lady gave me this red egg like trinket and said if you wear this while making a wish during the eclipse it will come true! #blessed

    I know right!

Last one we got here in the UK with totality was in 1999, and it was awesome. The next one we'll get is 2090, so I'm not entirely sure (*ahem*) I'll be around to see that one!

For those of you inclined to a bit of classic heavy metal (circa 1982 in this case), here's a song for ya:

And if you like ancient computer games, this 1989 game (that used the same engine & gameplay style as Driller and Dark Side, with a very different setting) was a bit of a gem:

I'm in totality at my house so I could just walk out back! But we're gonna drive a few minutes down to the ranch and see it at 100%. Overcast here but looking like it'll clear up. Fingers crossed, I read an article from an eclipse chaser who was like "go try anyway, clouds are weird during an eclipse, I've seen low lying ones vanish along the path of totality before". So we're gonna try.

This little town has had two entire town meetings about the peopel who are supposed to be arriving, and they were right to do it - we're expecting the area to have an extra 200K people.....

Huh. I wonder if that has to do with the temp changes due to the sun being blocked.

I've got about an hour before it begins in the KC area. It's been a beautifully clear day so far and we're only going to get about 90% occlusion, so it ought to be fun.

Cooler land from the eclipse reduces the amount warm air rising from the surface. That warm moist air is needed for the clouds to form. But this temporary cooling only dissipates low altitude cumulus clouds. It's unfortunately not enough to break up heavy cloud cover.

Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.

It feels weird saying this, but there's something concrete about seeing it start. Like the first edges, and now there's about 5%.
