Hi everyone my feel is that there is plenty of room for this discussion. But I think it would be good idea to lay out some common lanes and norms.

I have zero authority! So do probably you poster! And Geebs seems like he is really busy unfortunately so let’s respect that. Say what you think we need as a community, but also realise this thread isn’t going to change anything. If anything it’s our chance to crystallise our thoughts for the community right now.

Be as nice to people as reasonable. Obviously call out unfairness to people. But i think what this chat needs is some good honesty and introspection which I think we can all do so let’s all start with good faith I guess.

Something I'm really tired of here is how we put up with people who think that regular spaghetti pasta is better than angel hair pasta.

Angel hair pasta is the hair of angels!

It's better than your regular spaghetti!

    You g**se!

I for one think real angels would have thick hair

    How much hair?

    Nine

    Nine thick stalks

I mean sure Chico but I will start.

I genuinely think it is problematic that people are trying to have a genuine conversation about problems with moderation and then the conversation is locked by the person that people named. There is like a clearly a conflict for fairness here.

I'm pretty sure eating any part of the angel is considered a sin, even the hair.

So, you know, enjoy your angel hair pasta... IN HELL!.

Also it's a double sin if you don't use every part of the angel, so you're probably going to double hell.

I can't comment on the forum frustration with mods and locked threads because for whatever reasons I don't actually visit the threads where this shit seems to go down.

All I'd ask of people, and something I'm trying to practice every day, is to not assume the worst of someone's comment.

    Pasta is nothing without sauce

Which sauces do you think complement angel hair best

    - Red sauce
    - Brown sauce
    - White sauce
    - Mystery sauce

I read all 12 pages of that thread and audibly said "oh fuck off" when I saw who locked it.

That thread raised a good point I just never realized until it was pointed out.

I'm trying to not be cynical about the current situation, so I'll lay out how I see it so far:

Geebs knows there's an issue with the way things are. We've voiced our grievances as plainly and directly as possible, and it seems like his go to move is to wait until the anger smolders out and then move on with the status quo.

Nothing is going to change until our leadership is held to the same standard we hold ourselves. A fish rots from the head down.

Whippy is still here doing stuff behind the scenes, but doesn't post much and is clearly not getting involved in these discussions. I am not sure if she is intending to pass the torch and sail into the west after new mods are appointed or stick around though.

I'm not entirely convinced that it's useful to keep making these threads and I feel like they may be hyping people up and bouncing people off each other to exaggerate problems in each other's heads.

I actually found it pretty funny to read all these threads and posts about transparency and fairness in moderating when Tube's pretty explicitly stated position forever was that this was not a democracy, he'd do whatever the hell he wanted, and posters had zero rights. I'm not exactly sure what people think has changed that they're going to be listened to now, I don't think Geebs is really going to change that.

I am doubtful this thread will have much benefit, but like... Geebs did promise an update and to be more open and responsive, it's not really that weird that people expected something in that direction, and Geebs very clearly isn't doing the Tube-style "this is an autocracy, I don't owe you shit" strategy.

Make me a mod and I promise you I'll take it very seriously and try to not let biases determine my moderating and get burned out and bored in a week and then I'll stop posting all together and probably hit the road on the internet, drifting from forum to forum, never staying in one place for too long. I'll blend in, disappear, you'll never see me again.

Tube's schtick worked because he was active with it. It's not going to be effective without a proactive administrator.

Which is a way of saying Tube forced his style of community management to work through being active, very active. It wasn't something that will work with how geebs has handled things. At all.

    No I don't.

It also worked because it was a response to how the forums used to be, when SE++ really was the lawless land of brigands that some people still perceive it to be. That age is done and dusted and it's been gone for a very long time now.

First decree is there's no more GDSTs. Instead we'll do GDSSF and create a new subforum for every topic with their own moderating staff, their own chat thread, and their own rules.

Also like, it "worked" in some forms and not others.

I didn't get to post in the other thread but I definitely think the idea that threads are self moderated by people dogpiling on people is a terrible idea. A strong mod presence would be good for all the forums, though imo preferably not one that openly ridicules the community members. Ban or infract the jackasses, don't make a spectacle of it and shit up a thread.

That was the point of the original thread. We want a mod for SE++ so we don't have to do that kind of shit to self-moderate when someone is being a vile person. It's not that we enjoy doing it, it's literally our only option when reports aren't doing anything or people are concerned about getting infracted for using the report button, which is a valid concern considering several people have spoken about that happening in the last several years.

    Ok, serious talk.

There's nothing to be done if genuine constructive criticism about the forums is met with silence, empty apologies, or thread closings.

While I'd love to see this place improve, I'm starting to get more on board with the idea that besides riding out the last few years this place will have an active community before it's basically dead we'll just have to leave.

So basically hold on to your third space while you can, but don't be dependent on it, cause there's not the time, will, or manpower dedicated to this place to fix the various issues people have talked about.

I think it's generally agreed upon, and said by Geebs, that one part of the issue is that Geebs is currently in a position where he cannot move agilely or quickly to get forum issues done, and also needs to split his time between social issues and technical issues. The nature of this problem is such that is fundamentally cannot be solved quickly, because if it could, it would not exist. I get the frustration, but at the end of the day that's the filter that everything needs to get through first. Either you trust him when he says he's working on it, or you don't.

I don't think that he made that thread with the intent of it being purely performative, and I genuinely do believe something interceded in his life to place his attention elsewhere -- even if he can't be specific about what that might be.

But I do hope at least in the interim they're discussing who will be added on to the moderating team.

If this was a real job for me I'd consider:

Laying out an action plan for remedying specific repeated community demands that are reasonable - rough timelines for mods are a start but I'd really aim for some long-term, state of the forum one year plan shit with milestones

Offering transparency with rough timelines for when folks can expect these changes, and seeking ways the community would consider transparency to be improved so as to give users input on what would help (which could help lower the temperature considerably)

Providing firm comments on what isn't changing with real, understandable reasons behind them, but also weighing in with the input offered when those are posted

Explaining what I'd do about the visible issues in the other thread with a certain moderator and whether or not there will be changes to moderation style and enforcement guidelines to reduce the hostility between in-groups

This isn't my job though, I just loiter here, so I'll say Angel Hair Pasta is really good in a rose sauce, especially if it is gonna get covered in fruitti di mare
