But there's already been like 10 guilty gear animes, and you could even play them.

I haven't played any of Guilty Gear, I've seen some people I knew in college play it in the lobby of the main university building at ODU. Most of what I know is essentially from cultural osmosis and a bit of my own personal research on a few characters that I saw and wanted to know more details about their back story.

In theory, if they get the right team, there is a fair bit of established stuff from what I know, that they could actually put together a pretty solid story and thus anime. Granted, animation in general both in the west and the east is littered with movie, video and series adaptions of games that had plenty in their lore that could have been used for a solid series, but ended up being mediocre or god awful dogshit. Then I want to say you also have a few oddities like Gungrave, which did really well IIRC and that had very little to go off of from the game.

I mean the Guilty Gear franchise sounds interesting and from what I know, I wouldn't mind if they have a solid anime adaption because the lore is pretty neat. I just worry that it'll just be another disappointing adaption that lazily shot to just check off fanservice points and get more people to look into the game franchise and by merchandise, rather than be a serious attempt at being a compelling piece of media in its own right.

the series is being handled by sanzigen and the writer of the guilty gear manga/light novels/drama CDs, so it's pretty much the best you could hope for outside of daisuke and arcsys doing it in house

like, no promises but the same team did this

I have never been able to get into guilty gear's universe. Like i try to read something about it since i dont do fighting games and its like " the protaganist Sol Badguy wants revenge on That Guy" and I just cant. Like I have to assume its a parody or something.

i like kobold-tsumi better than regular izutsumi, but then I like dogs more than cats. also, i imagine it's probably harder to animate a kobold's somewhat realistic head

still, it's been great so far and i am looking forward to the next season for sure

moment i was really on board was the living armor, my favorite episode was the copies episode, and not really any low moments

guilty gear is one million percent earnest in its Anime Bullshit

ymmv but i had a similar experience to it as the devil may cry franchise where i had only a passing familiarity with some limited direct exposure to it for years and years, and had somewhat written it off until i finally gave it a real shot and was like oh this Rules actually?? this has ruled this entire time??

Given the subtitle and the mysterious new character in the key art, I'd assume it's a new story and not just redoing the game.

Adapting the Guilty Gear Strive "story mode" would be weird. It features zero gameplay, and as such is basically already an anime.

The main ongoing plot of the games got resolved in strive so the anime might be a new adventure sort of thing, or a sidestory.

Watching Ranking of Kings since crunchy finally got the sub up. This is not at all what I expected.
I'm like 10 episodes in and I can't tell if anybody is bad or just maybe makes bad decisions. I thought mirror witch but now it looks like she might a tragic backstory.
Though I cannot understand how the stepmom ended up back at the castle. They were sent away because of assassination attempts so they rode with purpose for a while and then just came right back?

Hey I want to watch a new(released in like the last 5 years or so) cool dumb action show where cool dumb action stuff happens.

Preferably something more lighthearted with a bit of comedy and not too dramatic, and while plot is not a priority it is welcome. Any recs?

I already know about the big stuff like MHA and JK, etc.

The last season of Symphogear was 2019, so it might fit.

All-girls Power Rangers whose suits are powered by singing.

(this video is from the first episode of season 5, so may contain spoilers about who is on the team and such)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys099qG3HVY

SSSS.Gridman, SSSS.Dynazenon, and Gridman Universe (film) are all by Trigger and it's what they made immediately before Delicious in Dungeon (there's even a Delicious in Dungeon easter egg at the end of the movie).

These are technically a sequel to Hyper Agent Gridman, a live action series from the 90s that got adapted in America as Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. Seeing it isn't needed though (two specific episodes of it add more depth to two characters, but that's it).

SSSS.Gridman comes first, then SSSS.Dynazenon is a different cast dealing with different stuff, then the movie has both casts coming together.

(This video is the official music video for the theme song for the movie, however it only features scenes from the two tv series and they're flashing by so fast it probably won't spoil much unless you're really good at inferring stuff)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4vjI6InDJM

Deca-Dence is a world where most of humanity has been wiped out and the remainder live in a mobile city and fight off giant bug creatures. The main character is a girl with a prosthetic arm.

(this is the official trailer, don't look up much else about it or you may get some big spoilers)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDfCpGU5cgc

I was going to mentioned Assassination Classroom, but it turns out it came out nearly ten years ago, what the hell?

Oh, and of course there's always Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Parts 4, 5, and 6 all came out in recent memory.

You could also try watching only the spider scenes in So I'm a Spider, So What?

shonen isn't really a genre label, it's a demographic one. Everything for 'boys', which includes a bunch of genres. Like "young adult" in publishing.

a lot of popular series aimed at kids do tend to fall into the endless battle bucket, but that's not really a good signpost for where the boundaries are

looking into it I guess it's from Weekly Young Jump, which is seinen so whoops
MangaPlus kind of just lumps it all together tbh

(for those curious, Shonen is marketed towards the 9-18 range while Seinen is marketed towards young adult men)

Shangri-La Frontier, a VRMMO anime where when you die in the game… you just respawn cuz it’s just a damn game and the main characters enjoy playing it. Has some great action scenes and is funny without being gross.

This. It's really fun, and a lot of why it's fun is because it's obvious why you'd want to play the game everyone's playing.

The cast is colourful, there's zero fan service (does the main character being a shirtless and fairly ripped looking guy count? The bird head may be an argument against), the VAing is really strong .. it's just good! Even folks playing avatars that don't match who they are in real life is treated as completely normal, to the point I'd wait it's one of the most low key trans friendly shows out there - of the main cast, 1 guy plays a lithe punchy lass, and another lady plays a giant armoured hulk of a guy.

And it's got a second season coming this October, because it apparently blew the hell up.

The manga is really good too, with plenty of content to chow down on.

The other bit that's great is that while the protagonists are shown to all be very talented gamers, they're not the absolute best or have cheats or similar. They make mistakes and fail (often in hilarious or very believable ways. Poor sunraku and his eagle related trauma). They all have different strengths and weaknesses as players and feel like believable people. It's a show that leverages the fact there's no real end of the world stakes to tell stories where you get invested in the stakes for the characters, their egos and goals, etc.

    Great stuff!

Ideas hate it when you anthropomorphize them

Given how popular(and super high quality) the UY remake is, I had a feeling this was next. But just like UY, the original show is a tough act to follow.

Will be interesting to see what they do with it. I saw a few episodes like a decade ago. I kind of feel like some aspects of the series, the gender fluid stuff were probably ahead of their time for mainstream stuff and are likely to be better received on the rating end of things. I fully suspect the right will lose their fucking shit when they see it because those sacks of shit are deeply threatened by trans people.

Will be interesting to see what they do with Happosai because the dirty, shitty, pedophile old man shit didn't age well. At least the series from what I recall, didn't laud his bullshit, but I could potentially see a modern adaption looking to either rewrite some of his most problematic aspects or sideline him as much as possible.

I'll have to do some research because I can't remember if the reoccurring Chinese characters avoided the stereotypical designs that were often used for Chinese characters of that time or if it was one of the rare few shows that managed to avoid it. Initial research seems to indicate that they did avoid it, since that isn't popping up.
