If I see someone doing this I close the gap. I dare you to try fucker.

We have some spots on our busiest roads where there’s three left turn lanes at a light. I have witnessed someone in the leftmost lane decide they no longer wish to turn, cutting off both other turn lanes to jump to the straight lane. This person is bad.

If there are construction signs telling you the lane is ending for the last 3 miles, and the moment lane ends you put on your blinker and casually try to merge in to me, I will not yield. Your plan works on me caring about avoiding an accident and you are 5 years too late buddy.

This one depends on how traffic is flowing to me. If it’s moving, then let em in, ain’t hurting anything. If it’s stop and go and they just wanted to skip the line, fuck em.

When someone attempts to cut into the front of the line of vehicles you are in you should apply 50-200 rounds from your coaxial 7.62mm medium machine gun and stand ready 120mm HEAT should this prove insufficient

    What's that

When two lanes constrict down to one lane, the fastest merge method is for both lanes to proceed all the way up to the constriction and then alternate. What most people wrongly do instead is to merge much earlier, as soon as they see a sign indicating the lane change, which is much more inefficient.

Oh yeah that... Kinda makes sense

But I drive on city streets almost exclusively so I often have plenty of room to simply get over early

Highways are fuckin scary still almost ten years after getting my license

  • KadithKadith Registered User regular
yeah in theory both lanes moving to the end is the most efficient pattern

in practice people who speed and swoop end up causing delays because someone has to come to a full stop to allow them in

depending on my mood sometimes i'll go at a slow speed in the closing lane until a late merge, but the point is to find a merging spot where no one has to slam on their brakes

There aresome studies out there indicating that the forward merge is, when done smoothly , actually more efficient for traffic flow that merging all the way at the back. But merging aggressively at the front in a way that interrupts already tight traffic is less efficient Because then the main column of traffic has to stop

I feel like I could be a lot better at driving

I'm not the worst or anything, but I feel like there's a lot of room between where I'm at and where the ceiling is. I wouldn't make it very far at all in a high speed chase, for instance

I'm surprised anybody makes it far in a high speed chase on Los Angeles freeways

  • SirToastySirToasty Registered User regular
In fine with that because of zipper merge, as discussed. What really bothers me is when someone tries to take matters into their own hands and straddle the line to block both lanes. Not your fucking job!

  • DouglasDangerDouglasDanger PennsylvaniaRegistered User regular
The zipper merge dream only works in simulations or other fictions

You'll always have an asshole wanting to get ahead and merge and drive like a goddamned jerk to do it, followed by someone trying to force everyone to merge early by blocking the lane

If you know how to signal properly, that already puts you in the top 5%

I sometimes do the Pac-Man not for things like these merges, but when everyone is waiting to go straight at an intersection with a red light, with a bike only lane to the right, and I see someone slow-rolling down a vehicle down that lane without a blinker. Because 9 times out of 10 that someone is going to attempt to gun it straight and push their way back into the lane mid-intersection to skip the line.

Depends how aggro I'm feeling that day.

Zipper merging is, in fact, better, and not using all available lanes is, in fact, bad.

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
  • DouglasDangerDouglasDanger PennsylvaniaRegistered User regular
Right, but no one zipper mergers correctly, at least not in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia or the Carolinas

I haven't driven enough in other states to have a definitive opinion elsewhere

Zipper merge works fine in other places. I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that 90% of Americans do not really understand how to drive.
The number of people who will stop in the middle of a roundabout in order to wave me in is frankly insane.

All drivers everywhere suck, yeah. Nothing works well anywhere.

related: I recently undertook an American Driving Exam, in order to add to my collection of horrible drivers licence photos.
Both the written and the practical test were alarmingly bare bones.

New Zealand - at least the last time I was there - has "Merge like a Zip" signs that we desperately need in the states.

That and a shit load of roundabouts. We're kind of getting there (at least in the Denver area) but no one knows how to properly fucking indicate in a roundabout (or in general really).

Living in two different Arkansan towns right at the point that they got their first roundabouts definitely reinforced the idea that southern drivers cannot be trusted.

Yeah they are putting roundabouts everywhere here now because some grant from or too the Ohio department of transportation specifically marked out for building not roundabouts...

They're fine but nobody fuckin knows how to use one particularly old people

Edit also the thing with merging is I'm extremely bad at checking my side view mirrors and my blind spots! And even worse at driving at speeds over like 45mph and being comfortable. It always feels like I'm seconds away from dying or getting someone killed at highway speeds.

Especially because highways are 65mph in Ohio and seventy fuckin five in Michigan.

It's actually a good thing to have a lot of room between you and the ceiling when you're driving. If there is not much room between you and the ceiling you may be driving inside someone's house.
