Strange Virus/HDD Corruption

Ok, so about a week ago, I noticed my computer was starting to act strange. Sometimes, when Windows XP would get through the loading process and show my profiles, I'd click on mine (the only one on there) and it would boot to my desktop, and then suddenly restart back to the bios screen only to do the whole process over again. Typically, after letting it do that, I'd have no problems for the rest of the day. I ran AVG and it detected no viruses. Adaware found 60 tracking cookies but nothing vicious.

This has happened about every day since then, but with increasingly volatile results. Yesterday, AVG told me "A very bad thing happened;" and proceeded to tell me the registry had to be repaired. That's really strange wording for a major Virus Scanner, so I was suspicious, to say the least. I ran some more tests and found nothing.

Today, I boot up and upon getting to my desktop, both Windows Explorer and iTunes Helper immediately give the "these programs have encountered a problem and need to close" error. My desktop goes away and comes back up, and I'm able to go about finding out what is the matter again, when I get another error saying "One of the files containing System Registry had to be recovered using a log or backup file. The Recovery was successful.

Something is definitely rooting around my hard drive. Help me exterminate it, H/A.

Run a scan disk, you may want to google your Hard disk make and model to check if others have experienced problems similair to this.

I personally do not think this is a virus, viruses usually try to sustain there own life by remaining hidden, not fucking up the PCs Itunes and File browser to indicate that they are setting up shop.

I used error-checking on the hard drive. Upon returning to windows I was still greeted with the "This system has recovered from a serious error" message stating it used a backup of the registry to recover. I'll try to scan the registry. Anyone know of a good free program to do that?

    Still stumped....
