So, school's out, and it won't be in for another 3 months. What do people usually do on their vacations from school to pass the time? Is summer vacation too long? Should more schools switch to the year around schedule so children don't forget everything they've learned during the boring and warm summer months? Personally, I'm trying to get a job and learn how to drive so I won't be bored.
Normally, I'd get a job, typically at Border's Books & Music, or at a coffee shop.
I would play volleyball 2-3 days a week, play untold amounts of Settlers of Catan (with ~$200 worth of expansions added in), and go to informal debates (about religion, other stuff) on Mondays and Thursdays.
Tuesday night if half off on sushi and martinis at two of my favorite haunts, and Wednesday is dollar pint night at a different place. I am also considering abusing the New York strip deal on Thursdays, one of these weeks.

- become a really good cook
- remember all that french i learned in high school
- progress in my photography hobby
- go to a lot of concerts
- get better at salsa dancing
- go rock-climbing a lot
- get better at classical guitar
- enjoy being single
This is my first summer actually home in a while as a free man (IE - not over in some godforsaken desert hellhole), so I'm kind of shocked at the idea of, golly gee, having some fun this summer.
Mainly I plan to work two or three shifts overtime down at the prisons ($30/hour. WHEEEE!!!), and head down to the forgotten beaches of Delaware and catch some sun. Hopefully I'll have the money saved up for a new fuel efficient car by the time Winter comes around.
I usually go to anime expo every summer. Sometimes I pick up working on models again now that I have more freetime. Going on long trips and vacations can be fun too.
Plans for this summer involve:
anime expo
Get a harmonica (or maybe a different instrument, still undecided) and begin to learn to play it.
Try to get my hands on a scooter or motorcycle.
Maybe pick up archery with a friend who used to do it.
I spend most of my summer reading, watching old movies, hanging out with friends and every couple years I visit Trinidad and Guyana. I usually lose track of time a few weeks in so get taken by surprise when its over.
I will read books and eat sushi on the screen porch.
Can I come over?
I too plan to read, and make a bunch of headway on my astronomy correspondence course, which I despise. Maybe I'll try to pick up a little Italian or German, too. I also plan to play large amounts of frisbee.
Man I really want to go back to Wildwood Shore in New Jersey. The boardwalk'ing and ocean swimming was one of my favorite things of the summer. I haven't been there for 3 years.
Instead, I'm going to:
-work my clinical engineering job with a passion
-take my physics class and revel in knowing everything already
-start fencing again (not until late July though)
-go rock climbing once a week like I used to
-hang out with my friends who are staying here over the summer
-catch up on my gaming backlog (M&M WoX, GalCiv2, Silent Storm)
-do some research into buying a motor scooter for autumn
-see if that crazy-intense-but-brief workout actually works when I try it
...And maybe I'll still be alive by the time summer ends!
I went to Vegas a few weeks ago. Going to Puerto Rico later this month.
I'll probably just spend most of the time working, chilling, or going out on the town. Summer isn't really all that different from the rest of the year, aside from the warm weather (which I love).
i'm still in school right now, but i get off in about a week. i'm gonna be doing a lot of gardening and working on my guitar skills, and jamming with some of my friends. i also make it a point to learn something new, and i've recently gotten a ukulele. i'm just becoming familiar with it at the moment, and i can play the same chords i play on the guitar. once i get more comfortable with it, i'm going to learn some ukulele songs, but i'm taking a more vihuela approach to it. me and my cousin are planning on doing a road trip. the summer break will be sprinkled with bits of camping and such here and there. also, i gotta find a job.

i want to get a job at borders, do you have any advice or what they expect of you when working there? i've never really worked at a coffee shop or a bookstore, i've worked at costco and UPS in the past, but i like the feel of book stores, and i'm going to be an english major/teacher, so as much advice or anything would be very cool.

Nothing really spectacular. It was a slightly more laid back environment than some other places I've worked, but nothing too crazy. The employees at my local Borders were totally awesome, but I'm not sure if that's just a local thing or characteristic of bookstores in general.
My parents owned a used bookstore, so I kind of had an "in" when they were hiring me. I don't think it's too hard to get in, though. I worked with a few total retards. Nice people, but retarded.

Subleting in Brooklyn with friends; working 10-5 M-Th in Manhattan, the rest of the time engaging in flaming hipster debauchery and going to free concerts
I work and don't get to do anything fun. I have a season pass to Canada's Wonderland though and went Saturday and the week before. Nothing big planned though.
The last time I was free during the summer was 2004 when I was traveling a little.
Usually my summer involves a lot of time spent down at the beach, surfing, scuba diving and lying around doing nothing. I try not to work much during the summer, but I try to do the stuff I never get round to during the rest of the year. Last summer I took up french lessons.
This summer I'm going to be in West Africa the whole time. The surf probably sucks, but hopefully my french will improve.
Doing some teaching in Senegal for a few months, then just gonna bum around with some English people in West Africa for a bit. A friend of mine worked at a refugee camp in Ghana for a while, and he might put me in contact with them.
On the side, translating a Gaelic version of the psalms to practice the language, visiting my girl/having her visit me :winky:, watching 24 season 5, playing games, a family reunion, a cousin's wedding, learning to cook and, for the sheer hell of it, to make some wicked mixed drinks as well.

You kids, with your summers. With your not working.
Learn to do something and practice it every day.
And stay off my lawn.
I'll be working soon! Soon I'll be a contributing member of society instead of just leeching. Soon.

That's disgusting.
He uses lard to make flour tortillas!
lard is in most foods i find delicious
Insofar as disgusting means delicious, you are correct.

The hopeful one is to build up a halfway decent lego collection and play Brikwars.
