I've had Kingdom Hearts explained to me a few times. I try to keep those times fresh in my mind because they taught me what I imagine my wife feels like when she asks a question about Star Trek and I say, "Pause it I'll give you the short version."

Am I the only one who thinks Kingdom Hearts is overrated? I can deal with the gimmicky aesthetic, but confusing story notwithstanding, the combat can be really clunky and the camera can be super janky. At least the music is good. And some of those Heartless designs can be really creative.

The janky camera/mechanics are a part of the "charm" of the series for sure.

Anyone who grew up/played the games when they first released just grinned-and-bared them so they could get to the story.

...and oh what a story it is.

The first game had a janky camera and controls. But it was a PS2 game and that was pretty normal for it's time.

3 didn't feel janky at all.

I pity that one collector that searches for invididual software revisions of snes carts including Street Fighter.

The Kingdom Hearts story has its head so far up its ass that it emerges from the other side like some kind of mobius strip or ouroboros.

I loved Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. However, 3 was a big disappointment. It was almost entirely comprised of re-used worlds from previous games and had very little new worlds to explore. Maybe even none at all. Meanwhile, there's still a ton of great Disney classics to be tapped for content, such as Robin Hood, Lady and the Tramp, The Great Mouse Detective, and the Rescuers.

Trying to start with KH3 due to a friend looking forward to it at the time, it was a hell of a trip

I believe the word you're looking for is "ouroborass."

I’ve been having these weird thoughts lately

Like does setting the camera to manual rather than auto make any difference, or not?

What? The Tangled, Toy Story, Frozen, Monsters Inc, Big Hero 6, and end game lore worlds were all new. Reused (Disney) worlds were Olympus, Pirates of the Caribbean (completely different and much better in 3), and 100 Acre Wood. 5 new worlds vs 3 old ones is a pretty good metric, I'm very curious what game you were playing...

(Important lore locations like the Destiny Islands and Yen Sid's Tower return because... they are important locations.)

    kingdom hearts... is light!

i'm replaying BBS right now because it finally came out on Steam.

the story is so unbearably cringe that it wraps all the way back around, and the gameplay's only janky in KH1.
perfect series in every way, especially the bad ways.

I am also of the opinion that Robin Hood in particular was a tragically unused property for this franchise.

I would have also accepted the Rescuers - Sora Donald and Goofy in mouse forms for that world would have been kind of adorable.

Tycho is asking all the wrong questions in that second pannel. As Gabe said, it doesn't matter, just pick a random one.

Isn't the plot of every KH basically: "The bad guy from the last game was actually working for / being mind controlled by the badder guy of this game"?

Long story short, no. Various villains are versions of the same guy, but they all have agency and just agree to work along similar lines, for the most part. In terms of characters being directly controlled, there's basically two: Riku in KH1 and Terra for most of the series (but that's actually more akin to his ego being completely removed from his body and replaced by someone else).
