i think a lot of people's complaints about their lack of specific subject in schooling is actually you weren't paying attention

which is often due to parental engagement

which is a whole other societal problem that's only getting worse!

yeah this is definitely it; like I definitely had math units on interest and the stock market and I vaguely recall a personal finance section at some point (though I think things changed so rapidly in that area it wound up mostly useless.)

one thing I'll often hear/read is 'man I wish school had taught me to do my taxes' and it's just like, I struggle to imagine a topic high schoolers would've paid less attention to than how to calculate your house' appreciation

our high school was pretty good in most respects though so it's hard to generalize; we had a pretty robust humanities curriculum that (in hindsight) I can see was run by a bunch of cynical old socialists

having read Zinn in high school was a minor flex when I got to undergrad

    Basic cooking techniques.

My folks didn’t teach me growing up and it put me on a path to rely more on takeout and processed/frozen food. More expensive and less healthy. A simple class in school would’ve helped a lot.

There's a certain type of parent that is ludicrously entitled to their children's time and attention. My mother, for example, will sometimes try to call me when I'm at work, and will get angry when I tell her I can't answer because I'm working/busy. I'm sure it's only going to get worse as her mental acuity declines with age. I can't even imagine how bad it is for teenagers who live and die by the whims of their own entitled parents in an age with an omnipresent constant digital connection to all people and things.

I know at least a couple coworkers who have those spy apps on their kids phones so they can track where they are and what they do on the phone.

These are elementary age kids, mind you.

it's going to be interesting to look back on the first generation of kids who had social-media-conscious parents; there was social media by the time I was in HS/undergrad but it was in its infancy and my sense was that Adults(tm) were broadly unaware of it

reality is that until you own property taxes are dead easy, and if yours aren't the reasons are probably specific enough to be outside the scope of a high school course

like you know what school actually did prepare me to do, oddly enough? Enter data from a bunch of forms into other forms

Yeah. Doesn't need to be anything fancy either. A pot of chili is super easy, the ingredients are cheap, and it turns out a pot full of meat and veggies is pretty healthy.

Social media has been a scourge to the old and young alike, in vastly different ways. It's made the kids hate themselves and made the old people hate the world. Not an ideal outcome for anyone who isn't selling those groups commerical products to assuage their anxieties.

Yeah, some emphasis on "we're not teaching this stuff for the sake of it, these are transferrable skills" would be useful to contextualise stuff

Like how we would learn textual analysis in English, then apply it to newspapers to demonstrate that using language to create emotions isn't just done by Shakespeare and William Golding

Not a lot of art discussion so far, which is pretty telling, I think!

Graphic Arts classes should have a full unit on how to draw Goku.

I'm very excited/terrified about what next school year will be like when we have a phone ban because let me tell, you if you haven't been in a high school since smart phones became mainstream then you don't know anything about what it is like. It's bad.

This has been the policy in our state for several years now. The kids don’t like it but accept it. You know what isn’t cool though? Teachers that aren’t on board, then we’re fighting with the kids because, they let me do it, why can’t you. Because my class gets shit done in class that’s why.

None of the good suggestions here will be implemented until we (meaning mainstream culture) acknowledge that western education is focused on reinforcing an unjust status quo. It is the first and largest battlefield in class warfare, a propaganda effort that outdoes any others in scope and success rate. All the racism, all the abuse, all the revisionist history, all of it is meant to protect the wealthy class.

I know we have educators on the forum, and I mean no offense to them. Thier work becomes part of the foundation for our children to lead meaningful lives. But thier work goes against the stream. Look at where the money goes. Look at who makes the rules, why they make them, and how they are enforced. Look at the response to large scale disruptions in normalcy, like how we responded to COVID. Look at how we respond to gun violence. Look at the absolute state of post secondary education.

Oh boy, its a fucking nightmare.

And its one exacerbated by the fact that seemingly every parent wants their child to have constant, immediate connection to them via their smartphone.

Every god damn parent thinks they ought to be the exception to the policy and until the education system can just fucking shatter that belief system we're going to continue to have kids that are destroying their minds via their phones.

Until we handle the whole gun problem kids should absolutely have thier cell phones on then at all times.

Honestly, while smart phones are likely the biggest issue across the nation (for the United States), our current challenge with school absences is frankly obscene.

Within my own state, attending school is entirely optional for a child.

Absences is easily the single biggest contributing factor to students in my class failing. They simply don't come to school and thus aren't learning.

Honestly more stuff that’s just kinda fun and not a fucking drag. Arts, music, less conventional sports programs. General stuff that makes culture exciting.

Though my school also didn’t teach evolution so I should probably say evolution.

Critical Thinking, or at least the ability to discern obvious BS in the things we hear and read.

    For the US
A class on what you rights as a US citizen are. And what your rights as a non-us citizen in America.

A class on what the constitution actually says.

I mean, kids should be going to school, but I live in an area with inter generational poverty and these kids are working 30 plus hours a week to help (or to make ends meet themselves) I have kids who are fourteen that are homeless. I can’t really fault these kids not attending, I want them to, to help break cycles, but you need to look at the situation they’re in before we just punish people for not attending.

The basics of philosophy should probably be taught in middle school. What is knowledge, what is real, why society exists and the good it has done.

And then the evergreen one: layman statistics. What good data look like, what biased data look like, how to collect good data. The difference between a population/statistic and extrapolation/interpolation. Don't even really need to get into the math of it, just the parts that our logical brains can nod in agreement with.
