Sewing. I can reattach a button or repair a seam alright, though my stitches are sloppy. But trying to do anything more complex (or not sloppy) makes my fingers tie into knots immediately.

Oh also, I want to make a backpack

specifically this backpack. Or a trapper nelson.

I am not entirely joking with this post.

No joke I’ve been focusing on learning basic self-sufficiency stuff (and teaching my kids) because I have less confidence than I’d like that society will continue much longer

Been thinking about getting into Historical European Martial Arts recently. I used to spend a decent amount of time around swords through theatre, and was overall decent at stage combat there, but especially now that I ain't acting anymore I've been thinking that it would be a good way to get some exercise (which I've got a history of weird hangups about so). And let's be real, it's also an excuse to buy more swords.

But also I am a lifelong dabbler, so most of the hobbies I've thought about getting into I actually have gotten into... for a month or two. A lot of it is stuff I can pick back up, more or less, but that's also a concern at a certain point with any new hobby - will it actually stick? Is it worth it if it doesn't?

I have thrown myself into most things that I have a passing interest in, the issue is not having enough time to really learn it

Getting better at hand drawing, game development, sewing, etc - I've got basics but not enough time to actively skill up in them

I do really want to test run some judo schools in the area once I've got pocket money again, and my boyfriend is also an extremely good indoor climber so I'll likely be taking that up despite/in spite of my fear of heights

I also gotta find more time for Irish Stick fighting training, but once again the money for lessons is my holdup

I'll agree with model trains. Once we have a bigger space, it's still something I might consider.

I really want to take a pottery class. I loved the pottery showdown on Max and keep watching adult ed listings to find a beginners class that fits my schedule.

Can I join the fictional band? I play ukulele but my current group is a bunch of semi retirees and we play far too much boomer rock and older.

I took a leisure class in knife making once, I would've liked to have gotten more into it. Pretty sure pounding on an anvil would not be welcome in the neighborhood though.

I've also been meaning to learn more knot tying techniques, which would be a significantly quieter hobby.

So the Sitcom tournament thread allowed me to post a recording of a Chuck Mangione song and it unlocked a core memory of heavy metal trumpeting- I arranged that for one of my college horn bands and learned/performed the whole Mangione feature part (while my best mate deafened everyone on the scream trumpet part)

I've got the same ADHD difficulty sticking to stuff deal that a lot of other folks here have, but I'd like to get into something kinda structured. It's too easy for me to drop a hobby if I have to rely on my own motivation and make time.

Like, Douglas' posts made me want to learn archery. I'd like to find classes for that. Maybe something where they supply/rent gear so I'm not buying more *stuff*.

I already play Yu-Gi-Oh online, but I am getting dangerously close to going to local events. I've been ordering the cards I need to complete my favourite deck so it's seeming inevitable, but I still have a number of concerns.

Playing a video game version has the advantage of tracking and calculating all the important information as well as applying the miriad of ruling nightmares correctly. Every local event I've glanced at seems pretty casual, but still.

I'd like to get into locals for fighting games too.

I go to EVO each year because it's fun and there's a lot to do and see, but it would be cool to start going to weekly events and hang out with people there.

One I've never tried but always wanted to: car repair

Like, I've changed oil and spark plugs and refilled fluids, replaced headlight bulbs and installed a radio, but I've never done anything really having to do with the parts of the car that make it a car. Engine. Transmission. Suspension. I'd love to just take an engine apart and put it back together one day, but I've never had the time, money, and space at the same time to do so.

-ttrpg design. This is recent since I’ve really started to enjoy reading about different design theory or playstyle, like moldvay (without the chud gg neckbeard stuff) or proactive roleplaying or the basics behind Mothership (I adore its simplicity). basics of world building, creating a monomyth, best practices for gritty exploration style games, how to make a versatile magic system that isn’t vancian and gives a player some creative ability while still including things like signature spells, rituals, and different types of magic that isn’t just a palette swap. Good examples are Whitehack in general, Legend’s take on Sorcery, BRP in theory

It’s just all cool and I got homebrew settings I’ve rolled around in my head for years but I can never find a 1:1 match with an existing system that doesn't require me to make compromises or isn’t learning curve heavy

For the longest time, I wanted to get into archery, I eventually tried it and loved it and it's like my thing now

So if you're interested in something and able to try it out, please do

I'd like to get into wood working, partly to go deeper into archery stuff, I have a garage, and a work bench I need to get some table clamps and files and and a sander

In my younger days, I spent so much money on buying musical instruments and gear (mostly guitar pedals).

Some of these things are built like tanks, and some... really aren't. I'd love to learn electronics and soldering so I could repair some of this stuff, and also maybe even make my own pedals. I think that would be really neat.

Time and space (and not knowing quite where to start) is the main hurdle, as well as being worried I'll spend a bunch of money on tools I might not end up using. I guess I could resell stuff or give it away if it doesn't work out.

Do you have a local makerspace or tool library? Sometimes they offer lessons, or have folks who are willing to teach. Sometimes you actually have to take the lessons to use the associated tools.

The tool library here for example has *so many tools*, and you can either pay an annual rate to get access to them, or pay in volunteer hours. Great if you want to try some out or just use a tool once.

I bought a cello a few years back

Never had the opportunity to learn a string instrument in my regular life, aside from some guitar lessons in college that fizzled out when my instructor realized he didn't know how to teach someone who was left handed

I've always loved the cello, but the one I bought was mostly a way to furnish the house I was trying to sell after I got divorced. Once my ex's stuff was gone the place looked too empty and I needed to fill out some square footage in a way that also classed up the joint in order to inflate the asking price

It worked, in that I eventually sold the house for way more than what it was listed for, but then I moved into an apartment that was too small, so the cello has been in storage for a few years now and I never actually learned to play it. Maybe someday...

    Honestly? First person video games.

I simply cannot play games from a first person perspective. It is a one way ticket to vomit town for me.

There's a whole pile of games that I would love to play and that everyone raves about that are forever out of my reach. Weep for me

Yeah, even walking simulators or third-person can be too much if I can't adequately adjust the FoV, camera movement, & refresh rate and turn off camera shake, head bob, & motion blur. A crosshair usually helps but not if the latter settings are fixed.

Not sure if it's migraines and/or a side effect of getting older, but there are now genres/formats I largely experience in peeks while I knit, as my partner or a streamer plays.

But that's not so bad, as we have a long habit of playing games together with one of us as the sole driver, or alternating on vibes or lives. So enjoying that experience has made it feel less of an onerous accommodation or deprivation.
    ----
My answer to the prompt is music theory, and string instruments.
My only real regret, ie not dumb anxiety shit, is not being ambitious or confident enough to pursue music as a career. I think I was good enough I could've made it in some orchestras with some development. But I am not built to hustle for the relatively few available flute seats, so whatever talent I have has foundered in the face of learned helplessness.

That's whatever, I have a therapist. But I do keep meaning to take a class or get a tutor to gain language and better articulate what I think I understand intuitively about music. (I was annoyed by scales because I didn't Get It, so it was just rote memorization.) I can immediately tell if a note is in tune, but can't identify it a la perfect pitch -- I have to hum my way to a match or play a reference. I used to have entire compositions float into my head, but with few exceptions, I was never fast enough in transcribing them before they'd disappear. Brain plasticity... maybe could revive that part of myself, but regardless, I do know it's important for my brain to have external structure and outlet for the things that make me feel alive.

And I just really love the lower registers, so while violin would be cool, I'm planning to take up cello or viola. Technically it's my partner's holiday gift to me, I just haven't followed through...
