My favorite announcement from the direct, and I can't fucking believe it's real. MvC2 alone has been in IP jail for like 9 years? And 7 games for $50 with online and lobbies and rollback etc... is a deal.

I know, right. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Absolute jaw-dropping moment. I got such an itch from the announcement that I was happy to find Capcom Fighting Collection on sale for cheap on Fanatical, and picked that up and have been playing it on my Steam Deck, both handheld and on my TV. That collection is focused primarily on the Darkstalkers series (but with a bunch of other games too including Hyper SF2 and Puzzle Fighter, 10 games in total). I've been impressed by it so far, with good emulation and features, and if MvC FC is as good (MvC already has even more features announced) then I'll be happy. Granted I've not tried online - as I understand it the playerbase is gone now anyway, but I'm old and have always preferred fighting games in local couch multi. Unfortunately I no longer have anyone to play them with... but that's another problem

Pretty much all the 2D MvC games, all of which are in this new collection (again, pinch me!), go for a small fortune now for legit copies. Even more so the Sega Saturn versions of the first four which were markedly better than the PlayStation ports of the same era. $50 (so probably £40 here) isn't cheap for a retro compilation, but it's absolute chump change compared to getting these games elsewhere.

Gonna be dope! Honestly probably not gonna play it much but I'll buy it and be glad to have it.

Also, while the inclusion of The Punisher is very cool, I think it's wasting the opportunity to include the X-Men arcade game, which has been unavailable on any platform since at least 2014 except in an Arcade1UP machine.

  • BigJoeMBigJoeM Registered User regular
That's Konami. So Capcom couldn't include it.

Somehow that had escaped me. Thank you for clarifying that! (Oops.)

At least Konami finally seem interested in video games again. So fingers crossed.

The best team is Ken/Cyclops/Cammy, because you just bum rush everyone and keep them down on the ground.

People who use Sentinel and Magneto are losers, I would love for it to be patched with a fuck you of making Sentinel old pre SF4 Dan bad.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
Dan was intended to be bad, right? I remember with the friends I used to play fighting games with in the '90s, winning with Dan was always worth a bit of kudos because he's deliberately nerfed to the point of being an effective handicap.

I haven't played SF4 or later to know they'd changed him.

He is a joke character, made to be silly and usually weak. He’s a parody of the main characters from Art of Fighting because Capcom thought one of them was a mashup of Ryu and Ken. Sometimes they accidentally break him, as happens with all fighting games, but generally speaking he’s supposed to suck.

As regards the price, I've just gone looking; and despite the surprise that apparently a copy of X-Men: Children of the Atom would be significantly cheaper on Saturn than on PlayStation here, it would still cost me several hundred pounds (UK) to get these games together, several of them into 3 figures per game. To say nothing of re-acquiring (and of course maintaining) old hardware, and dealing with - certainly on PS1 - significant corners cut in the unfortunately iffy ports as well (Saturn versions, where available, would be much better).

Yeah, I want Simpsons and X-men somewhere as well. TMNT already had their revival with the Cowabunga collection, maybe we'll get some other kind of Arcade Collection outside of the classics.

Hori makes a fight pad for the Switch, so it looks like I'll be dusting off the ol' Nintendo for this one. But then I think the wifi netcode will suck, so now I'm thinking maybe just go for a PS5 then, fuck you Microsoft seriously.

With this reveal and Unicorn Overlord and the Elden Ring DLC I'm actually feeling UwU about games this year, but I don't know if it's drop five hundo good...

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
Can always run a Switch with wired internet... when it's docked at least.

I really hope we get a statement soon from Xbox and/or Capcom, I'm sure both companies have taken note of the outcry on the socials. I really really hope they get their shit together and find a way to get the thing out on Xbox as well... the very non-specific (so far) date of "2024" makes me wonder if options are being left open. It'd suck in a different way if it were to come to Xbox later than the others, and it would be utterly insulting if the Xbox release announcement were to come after the launch on the other platforms.

So my guess is, sooner rather than later if it's just not coming to Xbox at all, and later in the year if somehow they can get it together. There's already no crossplay so could it be done on RE Engine on Xbox, say, if MT Framework is the problem... so much is up in the air and so much unknown about what's going on. But the intentional vagueness of the release date has me wondering if stuff is going on behind the scenes.

I assume like the rumors we are hearing from other devs, it's a cost analysis thing. Why release a game on a system that nobody seems to care about, nobody is buying, and those who do buy the system don't buy games because the platform pushes a subscription service?

I wish someone would stick their head over the parapet and at least say "this is why: <reason>" and scotch the endless speculation churning from the rumor mill. This is why I didn't dwell on it in the OP, there's several possible reasons here, it's extremely noticeable (it's the main topic of conversation about this collection besides "holy shit it exists"), and it's only made more apparent by Capcom announcing other forthcoming titles - including other retro collections! - that are coming to Xbox! So clearly they're not writing off the platform entirely.

Although obviously the ideal solution would be for MS and Capcom to work it the hell out, and before launch on PC/PS4/Switch at that so people can change pre-orders if they need to (which is why the lack of a release date is so damn curious). The series has a strong and appreciated history with Xbox machines from MvC2 onwards, after all. The noise on the socials cannot have escaped MS and Capcom's notice.

I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I've dreamed of this kind of release for literal YEARS, if not longer, so the announcement of this game made my day, and seeing no Xbox logo ruined it just as quick.

Since then, finding out that there are adapters that will allow me to use my Xbox controller on Switch instead of dealing with Switch's crummy Dpads has left me content enough, even if not fully satisfied.

I can't imagine a world where Ace Attorney Investigations would be considered less risky and more profitable than Marvel vs. Capcom. And if it's an MT Framework thing -- then why are they still using an outdated engine for it while other collections are using RE?

As for Xbox, upon seeing that this is coming to literally everything but their platforms, leadership should be asking themselves two important questions:

    1) Why?
    2) What can we do about it?

Even if it's not going to be a triple-platinum seller or whatever stupid metric is used to gauge success these days, it's just bad optics, and they don't need that right now.

It's also the second time this has happened (albeit WAY bigger than the first), and I get the feeling it won't be the last.

    Recent Xbox snubs:
    MvC Collection
    Rocket Knight Collection
    Animal Well

And probably others. Limited Run Games seems to be a culprit, but they're not the only ones.

Still no release date, but there's a "game spotlight" trailer up for X-Men: Children of the Atom - so hopefully ones for the other games will follow soon.

Because beat em ups are literally games about fighting and the characters continuously crossover.

    That is a great collection.

I am interested in what they are doing with alpha 3 upper. Are they emulating Naomi boards or is it a new implementation a la PSP alpha 3?

If they are going to do actual new implementations of stuff I would love a version of Alpha 2 with all the Alpha 3 upper characters (because the actual system is much better than alpha 3), but I know that’s a pretty niche ask.

I know they won't do it cause there's no money there, but I still really want them to go back and clean up the SF 30th Anniversary Collection. That or just do a new version of it in-house like with the fighting game collections they've been doing.

So, with this, there's still Star Gladiator and Rival Schools, but besides that, what's left for Capcom fighters?

    I've got:

    Final Fight Revenge
    Street Fighter EX 1-3
    Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

And I'm honestly a lot more optimistic about those last two now than I would have been just a year ago.

Oh, and I guess by this point, maybe SSFIIHD Remix/Ultra Street Fighter II, SFIV, SFV... all the modern stuff, really.
