Quick Thread: Selective Service/Draft?

No no, this isn't another "Should I go for teh military?" thread. I turned 18 about a month ago and it dawned on me that I have to sign up for the Draft. I haven't really read up on this too much but how should I go about doing this sort of thing? Should I just drive up to a post office or Library and sign some papers or is this something I can do online? Will I have to deal with recruiters or get anything in writing before I sign anything? Should I bring a Parent along with me or what? What should I look out for or what should I bring with me besides probably a Valid State ID. Any suggestions about this or is it pretty straight forward?

Sorry for the sloppy thread, but I don't have the time to really nice and purdy, sorry.

You need to sign up for the draft? What?

    This is news to me.

Yeah, you need to sign up, and yes, just do it online. As long as you currently reside in the US, and you're a citizen, you need to do it, and are eligible to do it online. All the info you'll need is on the US SSS website.

Maybe I did already or someone did it for me. I'm 24 now and don't recall ever doing it.

I think I was sent a card or something when I turned 18, but I don't remember for sure. You can use that site to check to see if you're registered.

If you're a guy and have any sort of federal student loans you're registered otherwise you couldn't get them.

Yea, most of the time they are good at reminding you when your filling out applications for student loans and other things. They also spam you via snail mail and also do it on your drivers license to? Or taxes?

Irregardless, you should sign up or you can get in trouble. I didn't have to deal with recruiters.

It's terribly simple, and I don't know anyone who's been bothered by recruiters after signing up. Just do it and forget it.

You can usually do this at the same time as you register to vote, just check the "register for the selective service" box or something. Quick and painless. Unless you get drafted.

I got mine automatically in the mail. I also pre registered to vote.

That might have had something to do with it.

Yeah selective service is also part of the voter registration form. Legally you are required to do it until you are 26 I believe.

Yeah, I did mine when I first had to sign up for federal loans for school. Wasn't anything that I had to worry about afterwards and I never got hassled by recruiters because of it. Of course this was back in 1993 so things were slightly different on the global stage.
