Anyone know any very extremely ultra-super sad [primarily] piano songs? Sadder then hungry kittens getting kick in the rain at the night... just utterly and truly sad. Bonus points for youtube or free [and legal!] mp3 links!
The main track from the movie "The Piano" by Michael Nyman. It's called "The Heart Asks Pleasure First". Great piece. You might be able to find it on iTunes. It's a very short track only about a minute and a half.

These are mainly links to youtube videos that I found but didn't watch/listen to because I'm at work. The songs themselves, though, are off the top of my head and are all good sad piano songs.
didnt Trent Reznor make some sort of all acoustic album? I'm sure there's good piano music on there.
Yes he did, he did an album called Still (available on the nin.com website) where he redid a few of his songs in piano (the highlights of these being "something I can never have", and "the fragile") and a few new, insturmental pieces (such as "GOne, still", "the persitance of loss", and "leaving hope")
"Something I can never have" and "leaving hope" are my favourites, and never fail to affect me.
Not sure if this is what you're looking for since the lyrics/music video are what make it sad rather than the actual music. Sadness may also depend on how much of teenage girl you are.
Being a burly masculine man, this song doesn't affect me.
I cry every time
EDIT: YouTube also has piano only versions, which upon review sound a lot more haunting than I had expected.
I second Coldplay " The Scientist" and Damien Rice "9 Crimes". I also suggest "Kuroi Namida (deep sadness version)" by Anna Tsuchiya. Its all in Japanese but the lyrics translated makes it one damn depressing song. And the guitar enters at the right moment so its not COMPLETELY piano all the way around, but neither is "The Scientist".

Most romanticists make depressing music, but IIRC Schubert wins the prize.
Unless you mean "sad" as in "really really really bad".
I'm not sure if this is the original clip however but the music still works.
Satans..... hints.....
Nick Cave - Into My Arms, Black Hair, There Is A Kingdom...more or less anything off The Boatman's Call

Also, Mahler's 9th. When a piece recesses from D major to Db major, heh.

There's a Chopin piece that's awesome as well, I think it's one of his Nocturnes. Someone mentioned the f# minor, that may be the one I'm thinking of.
Also "The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)"

pathetique...so depressing (I'm talking about Beethoven Sonata no. 8 movement 2, though)
and am I the only one who finds Greensleeves depressing as well?

This is somebodies youtube version, so you'll have to get the piece of music itself.
Oh, Pathetique is incredible. I remember I once had that on loop for about 3 hours.
I guess you could call it a piano song. It's definitely sad.
Doo do do, doo do do, Doo do do, doo do do . . .
Damn, seems like Ben Folds writes a lot of sad songs. I think this one might be my favorite of the sad ones though.
