I've been saying this for awhile now but like, search engines are the way we engage with the internet now in a way I don't think people fully appreciate and even before the AI boom we had an entire SEO industry devoted to setting it on fire for profit. AI was just a can of gasoline.

Recently I installed a new desktop and one thing I like to do is go find a bunch of art and put together a brand new slideshow folder. There’s always someone’s folio they’ve put up somewhere and you flick em a few bucks and you download hires versions of their art. It’s been a number of years since I’ve done this, and it just feels like it’s… dead. It’s all just AI dreck now

Maybe things have changed and I don’t know where to go or what to search, but I have had very little luck. There’s a big reddit community for wallpapers, but they’re not ever linking back to artists or what have you, they just repost the art and start yelling, “look at me! Look at me!”

The search function in gmail is literally worthless. I type something in the search field, and it shows a short list of some (but not all) hits. When I hit enter to list all the hits, it tells me nothing matches my query. 100% of the times I've tried.

I saw the list, google. Stop lying to me.

I've started having to just use the search to filter down to a time period of when I think I received what I'm looking for and then manually scroll. I've had this gmail account since 2004 so there's a lot of stuff that I never deleted because of the whole "just archive it" ethos they launched with. So that means that when it automatically does a synonym search instead of the words I put in the search bar it comes back with thousands of results where something almost but not quite is matched in email footers -- usually the registered address of companies in confirmation emails.

It's always worse on the mobile app, too. The "Top Results" won't actually contain what I'm looking for anymore.

    It's all shit.

There is a cascade of AI slop drowning YouTube right now. It is horrible, particularly for YouTube Shorts. Sad to say but unless a video has a high number of likes, or a channel I trust, or a very niche interest, I instantly disregard

SB 1047 had the backing of AI safety groups, responsible tech orgs and many unions.

By vetoing it, Newsom sided with Big Tech, billionaire-backed VC firms & the Chamber of Commerce.

    https://variety.com/2024/biz/news/gavin-newsom-sag-aftra-ai-bill-1047-artificial-intelligence-1236158405/
California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill on Sunday that sought to ward off catastrophic risks of highly advanced artificial intelligence models.

The bill, SB 1047, was the most controversial AI bill of the legislative session, with dozens of activists and AI companies lining up on either side. The authors warned that if left unregulated, AI models could be used to develop chemical or nuclear weapons, which could lead to mass casualties. Opponents argued that heavy-handed regulation would strangle the development of AI, and force AI companies to leave the state.

In a veto message, Newsom said the bill is addressing a genuine problem, but does does not establish the right regulatory framework.

“I do not believe this is the best approach to protecting the public from real threats posed by the technology,” he wrote. “Ultimately, any framework for effectively regulating Al needs to keep pace with the technology itself.”

Among the supporters of the bill was SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents Hollywood actors. A group called “Artists for Safe AI” also issued an open letter supporting the bill on Tuesday, with support from J.J. Abrams, Shonda Rhimes, Judd Apatow, Rob Reiner, Jane Fonda, Rian Johnson, Adam McKay, Mark Hamill, Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle and others.

The actors union has been outspoken on the threat of AI to clone actors and put them in movies or TV shows without their consent. This is the first time the union has weighed in on the bigger-picture risks, outside the entertainment realm, that could come from highly advanced AI models.

“It really stems from the fact we have experienced firsthand the dangers of one aspect of AI,” said Jeffrey Bennett, general counsel of the union. “This bill seems to be the one bill that targets only the incredibly powerful expensive systems that have the capability to cause a mass critical problem. Why not regulate at that level? Why not build in some sensible, basic safety protocols at this stage of the game?”

While announcing the veto on Sunday, Newsom said he would also convene experts to develop regulations to promote the safe development of AI, and that he would continue to work on the issue next year.

It’d be nice to have a society that wasn’t built around the sole purpose of sucking the dicks of a bunch of white supremacist, cishet, Nazi/nazi-adjacent billionaires whose open goal is the commodification of everything and the destruction of anyone below c-suite class’s ability to make a living for the things they want to commoditize and exploit

Harris is trying very hard not to have a public position on AI, but she "vowed to help grow investment in artificial intelligence and crypto if elected, pitching her economic agenda to donors in New York City on Sunday as one that would bolster innovation and focus regulations on protecting consumers and investors."

    This is disgusting if true

Among the missing in the Erwin, TN flash flooding form Hurricane Helene are employees from Impact Plastics, who were allegedly told to remain at the facility as flood waters trapped them.

Impact Plastics hasn’t commented. I cannot imagine justification for having employees going into work that morning with so many schools and businesses preemptively shutdown.

    https://www.wjhl.com/news/local/unicoi-county-families-still-searching-for-missing-loved-ones/amp/
“We’ve probably got over 100 people at this time in the I-26, Industrial Park [areas] are conducting searches, but there are such large debris piles that it will be very tedious and we have to be very careful during our procedure,” said Erwin.

The Industrial Park area of the county remains a high priority, according to Erwin. Families of workers who reportedly went missing from the Impact Plastics facility the day of the storms came to Sunday morning’s briefing, making a desperate plea for their return.

The families of Lydia Verdugo, Monica Hernandez, Rosa Andrade, and Bertha Mendoza were outside the high school holding signs, hoping someone would recognize them and say they were okay.

News Channel 11 has attempted to make contact with Impact Plastics for comment on the missing employees and will continue to do so.

    https://wcyb.com/news/local/desperate-unicoi-families-seek-answers-as-search-for-missing-loved-ones-continues
Unicoi County officials confirmed that there are dozens of community members missing and several of those are Hispanic and the community is desperate for answers.

‘I’ve been here since Friday from six am until 12:30 pm in the morning. Yesterday I came back at six to see if there was an answer or a result but there was nothing,’ said sister of missing person Guadalupe Hernandez Corona.

‘I’m searching for my wife and I’m desperate I don’t know anything about her,’ said husband of missing person Francisco Javier Guerrero.

Guadalupe Hernandez Corona and Francisco Javier Guerrero are just two of many who are desperate for answers.

Guadalupe has not spoken to her sister Monica Hernandez since Friday morning.

Their last conversation together leving her distraught.

‘She was saying they were inside the factory and that she was on top of a trailer and saying goodbye and telling us to call 911 and pray for her,’ said Guadalupe.

While speaking to family members they explained that before the flooding many of those working called their loved ones telling them they were worried about the weather.

Family members claim that factory officials did not ask them to evacuate in time.

She was still working when she called me and she told me that it was really raining and I told her to leave but she told me they weren’t telling her anything, said son of missing person Fernando Ruiz.

‘If they would have told them to leave earlier maybe they would still be here today and we wouldn’t be looking for them but when they tried to leave it was too late,’ said the community translator.

News 5's Yannia Nordelo reached out to Impact Plastics Inc. for a statement and they said they are currently working on one to release.

Guadalupe says community support is what is keeping everyone hopeful.

‘As Hispanics we are always united, we are always united in every situation, and in all circumstances, we want to support and search everywhere but we just want them to let us search,’ said Guadalupe.

Saying they won't stop looking until they find answers.

‘We are here we are not going to abandon you we are still searching, we are still searching for you, you are not alone, you are not alone we have all these people searching for you,’ said, Guadalupe.

Kris Kristofferson died on Saturday. 88 years old. Pour one out for a real one, folks.

He was one of the few people with the moral courage to stand against the racist, jingoistic bent that began infecting American Country Music in the wake of 9/11. He went so far as to tell Toby Keith to go fuck himself when Keith tried to tell him not to play any lefty songs, astutely pointing out that Keith had never cashed a check from his country issued to him for killing a man.

May we all endeavor to have even a fraction of that man's bravery and fortitude.

One wild thing about this - one particular white supremacist, cishet, Nazi billionaire who was pushing him to sign the bill is Musk. But Newsom just has to keep sticking his dick in the other wallets. Just a complete waste of space.
