The enthusiasm Mike talks about this game with has me convinced. Definitely going to try it out, and I'm kind of sad I didn't try it when it was new and the community was fresh.

The only thing I'm hesitant about is going into a community of grizzled veterans.

    I would download a car.

I sometimes wonder how any kind of game got popular despite this problem that player skill levels can be so far apart (even chess or soccer)

If the game is well designed and the barrier of entry isn't insane, you can become better at it fairly easily, even when the skill ceiling is very high. Sure, you won't climb from the skill floor to the skill ceiling in an hour, but each step is easy enough to take until you get really close to the ceiling, and along the way you will usually face people around your level.

This last bit is why games with no kind of rank matching suffer, and why players manipulating that system to keep themselves at a lower rank than they reasonably should be is so damaging to a game. Because you can have fun playing chess even if you're not that good, but if every time you sit down there's a 60% chance of a 2150 tank player sitting down, beating you in fifteen moves, and then rubbing his balls on your queen while telling you to kill yourself you're just going to quit.

I hate smurfing so much. Though nothing feels better than beating a smurf.
