The current Vice President Kamala Harris faces off against former President Donald Trump in the first head-to-head debate between the two candidates. No third party candidates will be present at this debate.

Who are the moderators?
ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis are slated to moderate the debate.

When and where to watch
The event will air at 9 p.m. ET for 90 minutes from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It will be streamed on ABC News Live, Disney+ and Hulu. There will also likely be streams on YouTube and other locations.

Thread Rules
The general D&D political thread rules apply here. In addition:
  • As this is a live watch thread, some amount of "livetweeting" will probably occur. Try to reference what is being reacted to, but we'll be a bit more lax about this, since this thread is made specifically for that purpose. Just be aware that conversations can be hard to follow if they don't have a reference to what is going on currently, as people may be viewing this asynchronously. Someone who is on a 15 minute or 1 hour delay should be able to follow along the thread.
  • Try to keep discussion in this thread focused on the debate. If discussion starts getting into the weeds of, say, Israel-Palestine, Immigration, Voting rights, or general Election coverage, take it to the appropriate thread instead.
  • The thread will remain open for a couple of days after the debate to tie up any immediate discussion, but further discussion probably will be shunted to the general Election thread.

One other thing to add up front: the whole campaign, and the debates specifically, are definitely a major source of anxiety for a lot of people, between the stakes, the way people rile one another up, and the way people rile themselves up. The fiasco that was the previous one probably didn't help.

If you're one of those people who's worried about how panicky the whole thing's going to make you tonight, I'm not going to make you stop participating in the thread (unless things go deeply off the rails), but I am going to ask that you consider finding some distractions for the evening if you're able to. Nobody needs to freak themselves out to the point of hurting themselves one way or another just to keep on top of the events of the evening, and doing so isn't going to change the outcome.

Basically, if you're worried about yourself, nobody's going to think any less of you if you keep your head down for the evening and catch up on the fireworks tomorrow instead of in realtime. The "be kind" exhortations in D&D don't just apply to other posters; they apply to you.

My hope for the debate is that Kamala does the same thing that Trump did and jabs at the other guy while her own mic is muted, flustering the other guy

I know it won't happen because she'll likely be reprimanded, but you bet your butt that Trump will do it and get away with it under the moderator

At the very least she needs to calmly continue talking over Trump when he's muted and continuing his verbal diarrhea

As a suggestion for those into making production lines as far as the eye can see, Satisfactory just left early access today. It's a lot better for your mental health than watching a presidential debate live.

I'll be playing Satisfactory instead. But I've also had a very bad day so it's definitely for my mental health.

Edit: I appreciate everyone who is watching and proving highlights / commentary.

I don't watch the talking heads much. Are these ABC people likely to call out bullshit during the debate?

ABC said a whole lot of words when asked about that, and those words translated as "we won't be fact-checking and we're being very careful to avoid saying so."

    Hi5 my fellow Satisfactory players.

My prediction for the debate is Trump just repeats his July performance and Kamala doesn't fuck up royalty, leading the media to declare a tie or a close victory for whatever candidate the think will generate the most hits.

I can stand listening to Trump and I don't really respect how presidential debates are run, so I'm just going to rely on this thread to get the highlight. Wish I could point people towards a good youtube channel that isn't ABC's, but the only way I can see denying them views, would be watching someone's live reaction and that is going to be a mixed bag because the youtuber is likely to start yapping at a point that results in you missing something that is said.

I hope that somebody asks him to clarify what he meant when he was asked in a town hall (or something) by a woman wanting some reassurance about child care costs being too high and he rambled about tariffs and how that would make it insignificant.

Elect me again and I'll make you rich this time! Promise!

I think everyone is wanting Harris to call out Trump on some meandering nonsense, something out and out racist or just something flatly mad - kind of feels that's the premise of the whole thing, with the moderators just stepping in case this doesn't happen dramatically enough.

If by bullshit, you mean lies then no. Moderators are intended to keep the debate on track and within the rules. They aren't fact checkers.

the thing that drives me crazy about these debates is that the coverage between like, sunday night football and this debate are not different enough to feel healthy for america

Yeah they're not journalists, they're at best theater critics.

ABC has been owned by Disney for almost 20 years

Edit: I'm sorry, almost 30 years

I've seen sports coverage that had stronger empirical footing than most political coverage. I remember some brain damaged football guy refer to a pretty high level statistics concept that his audience understood just fine from fantasy football, and I thought, why the hell can't we have this with our politics...?

Disney owns ABC, eh? Honestly why would you buy a network in this day and age lol... but whatever. They should have a Mickey VTuber intro the thing. Lean into it.

Because you can make a lot of money being a political hack, but not for being a hack about pretty much anything else.

Counterpoint, fuck those motherfuckers. I'm watching the Harris campaign's stream because fuck giving any media operation a viewer.

The Harris campaign said they will be fact checking in realtime with the debate. I doubt Harris will directly do that so she doesn't get bogged down in the weeds, but she will be able to respond back to what Trump is saying.

I'm unsure if they're going to do the simultaneous feed of both candidates on screen throughout.

No idea, they had staffers talking when I jumped in, and I'm gonna be watching on ABCs stream.

Edit: Though they currently are talking to Reince Priebus so not sure how good of a decision on my part.
