Urine oddity-- querying the importance

There appears to be some sort of particulate matter of darkish color in my urine, that passes painlessly. When it first happened I assumed I had just stirred up something in the water, but this time I checked the before/after and it was definitely something I had ejected.

How many days do I wait before I see a doctor? Is this a symptom of a serious problem, or just from eating something queer?

Can you describe it in more detail?

Do you have any other symptoms? Nausea, aches, vomiting, etc.?

The only darkish thing I can think of (though certainly not the only possible one) occurs when people workout too hard and their muscles go through rapid breakdown.

Certain foods or drinks - various types of foods or drink affect urine consistency and coloration is most likely the case unless you've been having unprotected sex or your kidneys are failing on you. It could be a urinary infection but all these cases fall on the rare side. Just drink plenty of water (not too much though) and see if these keeps happening over a number of days. Then you can be fearful and seek medical attention.

If it has something to do with muscles breaking down, that'd make a lot of sense. I haven't been able to eat well, if much at all lately, due to various constraints. I know that muscle mass is the first thing to go in starvation, and I've been losing about a pound a day, so.

    That might constitute "rapid."

It's hard to make out any other symptoms of aches or nausea in the mess of soreness I'm in at the moment, but I do think there has been some above and beyond hunger pangs. It's more a general soreness and exhaustion of the entire body though, but I'd attributed that mostly to lack of sleep as well.

    So. I guess I'm melting.

Pretty cut and dry, I guess. Thanks.

If you eat a lot of beats then it turns your poop a bright purple color.

a pound a day? that sounds pretty unhealthy.

in other news I had a biology teach who said the only color stool (poo-poo) to ever worry about is black. Black means you have internal bleeding in your intestines. Which is probably bad.

Your biology teacher is probably an idiot. There are a lot of problems and a lot of colours you should really be looking for http://www.enzymestuff.com/rtstools.htm

I'd suggest going to the doc if nothing more for the piece of mind.

They'll start with a urine test, which is quick, easy, painless, and not that expensive if you're paying out-of-pocket.
They'll check for things like internal bleeding, infection, etc.

The doc might want to "swab", this is up to you of course.
Swabbing means taking a long q-tip, lubing it up, and sticking it up your urethra about 1.5" (yes, that far).
Sounds scary, I know - but honestly it didn't hurt at all - it just felt very very weird.

I had to do this last year, as it turned out I had an e.coli bladder infection (which is apparently rare for men, and neither the doc or I have any idea on how it actually happened - i'm married and not promiscuous, my wife and I are also clean as a whistle from tests we both did prior to marriage).
However, I had small dark particulate matter as well (and not much pain/discomfort) along with some weight loss - which is why I suggest the doc.

Seriously, prioritise this above all else.

I'd see a doctor given this problem coupled with losing a pound a day. Also losing that much weight especially if you're not carrying a lot of fat is really really unhealthy. How long have you been losing that weight for?

"A pound a day" is half-exaggeration, it's between 3 and 4 pounds a week but I seem to have bottomed out around 126, as I am eating more. A lot of it is cheap, easy to prepare (read: open the package of) empty calories though, since I have no actual place to prepare any real food and it's too expensive to buy it pre-prepared. I am eligible for food stamps though, so I wager I should get on that to help address the issue. It really isn't that bad, and the dinky BMI thing says I'm just about underweight now-- 5'11", 127 pounds as of a few minutes ago.

Anyway, I'll schedule something with my GP, and I don't really want to talk about food or weight issues so I'm just going to preemptively bow out of anything like that. Thanks for the advice.

If you're stuck with cheap food, you should probably go for something like Burritos. You can get ten small ones for like $3. Plenty of calories, protein, and fats to keep you not-dead. Huge amounts of salt, though, so make sure you're getting some water, and aiming to move on to -real- food as soon as possible. But they'll keep the pounds on you.

chicken... that is a cheap source of protein and is fairly healthy for you.

Also cereal... get all whole grains, like Oaty-Os or just normal Oatmeal. Get the 'natural' stuff, or at the very least, the stuff that isn't packed with sugar... if it just says "Ingredients: Oats" then your on the right track.

Bags of Rice can get purchased for cheap... like a few bucks for a pound or two (that should last you awhile).

V-8 juice is good. Lots of vitiams for cheap.

Another tip when buying cheap food, try to buy 'raw' foods... by 'raw' I mean, with Rice for example, it should just say "Ingredients: Rice"... if it has 25 chemical names that you can't pronounce, don't buy it... just get the rice and don't worry about those fancy chemicals, they aren't part of a daily balanced diet.

Also this is probably bad for you, but I did this when I was hard up: generic frozen pizza. You can get them on sale for like a dollar. ten bucks equals 10 pizzas. It can't be good for you though.

Not saying this is the health list diet in the world, but it'll keep weight on you and fairly healthily while waiting to get some better food in ya.
