I think his build is just fine.

The issue is that 90% of his screen time was a running gag about how nobody could understand this whacky nonsense accent he was doing and that's going to get old before the credits finish if he's a lead character.

I get the joke, but I kind of agree with Gabe's take here. As much as I like Tatum, he doesn't really look like Gambit to me. Its kind of like how Marvel initially did extensive screen testing with Tom Hiddleston as Thor, an if you ever watch the Screen tests, he is doing some yeoman's work, but he just wasn't Thor. Taylor Kitsch did a less than stellar job in a horrible movie. But there was no denying that he looked like Gambit. If you were to force me to cast someone for Gambit today.....I'd probably lean towards a Glenn Powell type.

I said this in a movie thread at some point

But a Gambit movie would 100% work with that same actor and character.

You just pair him with Jubilee and make it X-Men 21 Jump Street.

Just constantly fucking up missions and having to go back and explain it to Xavier.

There are some casting choices out there that are just obvious matches made in heaven. Patrick Stewart as Professor X is the frontrunner. Or hey, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool since that is partly the topic.

Then there are those casting choices that sound utterly insane. Until you see them in action, then it's like... where the hell was this all my life? Like Heath Ledger as the Joker.

Channing Tatum is... almost but neither of either of those. I saw the movie. They fuckin' nailed the costume. He nailed the accent. But yeah, he looked like 2 sizes too jacked for what I usually associate with Gambit. Also, was Gambit always that crude? Like when he's talking about his daddy laying those buttery nuts all up in his momma. But that might have just been because it was also a Deadpool movie.

It's not my dream casting for the cajun at all. But at the same time, and in defense of Tatum, you can just feel his love and commitment to the role. You can tell as much in the interviews he's done since as well. That and the costume get him like 85% of the way there. So if he's going to be Gambit in future movies... so be it. He'd be great enough.

I liked Gambit just fine for the short time we had with him. Costume certainly helped.

Acting certainly could have been worse; get vin Diesel up in there mumbling in a bad creole.

You can't have this thread without mentioning Hugh Jackman as Tall Wolverine.

Back when Molina was cast as Doctor Octopus, a forum I was part of went into full panic mode. They didn't think he would be good for the role.

He was perfect for the role.

Not really, but bear in mind for a lot of us the formative experience with the character was back during the 90's, via the Saturday morning children's cartoon and back when the printed comic still tried to get CCA approved. So there was going to be limits on what dialogue would fly since the format was at best PG-13. I think this was the first time the character was used in a film format that was explicitly R rated.

That I know of. This is the internet, I am sure now that I have said that, someone will be along shortly to advise otherwise and directly or indirectly imply that I have brain damage or some sort of moral failing for not obsessively keeping up on every development.
