My kids like gaming, but my daughter more than my son. He prefers games where big number goes big. So, being the awesome parent that I am, I got him Balatro on the Switch. Let's make those numbers go HUGE!

Turns out the game is not best played in about 20 minute sessions before you fall asleep on the couch.

Between games I like to do a case in an Ace Attorney game, as a little pallet cleanser. Almost done the one I'm on...

But now I'm eyeballing that February release date for Xenoblade Chronicles X, and questioning whether I have time between now and then to sneak in one of my backlog (FF X/X2, Unicorn Overlord, Ace Attorney Investigations). Oh hey, looking it up it's actually March 20th... don't know why I thought it was coming in February.

On to Unicorn Overlord it is... or maybe FF X?

Announcements generally get made in days there isn't much else going on, or else together with similar announcements, to get the most visibility possible

I've been playing Final Fantasy pixel remaster games in between other games. I'm playing FF5 right now which is the only one that I've never played in some form or another. Once I'm done with the pixel remaster, I'll start on the original Playstation Final Fantasy games which I have also never played before because they weren't on Nintendo consoles.

I had really curbed my game buying until the Mrs got me a Switch for my birthday. Now Im up to elbows with RPG backlogs alone. I knocked out Unicorn Overlord and Disco Elysium this year at least.
I am NOT taking it on holiday with me. Ive got a DS with HeartGold and FF Tactics Advance in the DS / GBA slots. Its a retro Xmas.

That March 20th release for Xenoblade makes me suspicious it may have some extra bells and whistles for Switch 2. 4K mode maybe?

My kids wanted Brothership, that game where Peach has a thousand costums, and a paper Mario game. My wife decreed there shalt only be one Nintendo game for xmas, so the one i want to play it is (Brothership).

I think I'm getting close to the end of Xenoblade 3. Put the story on hold to run around and fill in the missing spots in the hero roster before continuing. Hope the game sticks the landing because it's been great so far.

God, there are a lot of Wii U games I would rebuy on Switch if they were like $30 or something.

I've just started playin FF6 (the pixel collection version) for the first time (I've beaten the GBA version of FF5 some years ago). I love FF5, one of my favourites. I've also bean tempted to buy the Switch version of FF9, which is another favourite of mine, but I know I can get it on steam for much cheaper, but I don't tend to play play games on pc any more, I haven't even turned on my laptop in months.

FF5 is a struggle if you don't understand how the job system works, a great game to break over your knee if you do. Definitely a great time.

I think the only Pixel remasters I'd pick up are the ones of the NES games, as I beat the SNES ones on the GBA (seriously, why is none of the GBA bonus content in the pixel remasters?) Though I'm not sure if I'd rather play the GBA remasters of FF1 & 2.

I need to pick up FFIX and beat it one of these days. It was my favorite, but I got that "Need to do everything to prepare for beating the game" choice paralysis that caused me to drop it near the end. Just can't decide what to get it for.

I'm pretty sure both the GBA and PSP versions of FF1 and FF2 had bonus content as well that's missing from the pixel collection.

It would have been nice if the GBA content was in the pixel remaster however I personally think the PR is the best way for new players to experience the games, at least for FF6 which is the one I’m most familiar with. Autosave, quick save, auto battle, turning off random battles, area maps, and bestiary info makes for such a pleasant experience. The GBA version is great, but sometimes you wanna explore Narshe caves without getting into a battle every few steps, and sometimes you get party-wiped by a lvl5 doom spell and autosave will make it so you don’t have to do the whole dungeon again.

The extra content would have been great to include though.

So just like how Warner Bros. is removing various animated shows off Max, now they're delisting games for no real reason.

In this case Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, OK K.O. Let’s Play Heroes, Steven Universe: Save the Light, and Steven Universe: Unleash the Light. They weren't great games though.

My 6 year old is getting a switch lite for Christmas, this opens up the possibility of some local, non couch coop. Are there are really good options there? There's definitely a benefit of not getting confused about which side of the screen is which, so maybe Stardew or Minecraft.

It's not co-op, but Pac-Man VS is playable if you have two Switches and one of them can dock. It's part of one of the Namco collections, but I forget which one. It's competitive Pac-Man for 2-4 players (but I don't recommend just 2, as it really shines with 3-4 people).

Mario 64 is on the Nintendo Music app now. One new game every Tuesday is an interest way to drip feed this, but I get that it sort of serves to remind people that the app exists at all.

Whew, took me probably an hour or more to mess around with the new switch lite and transfer stuff over for my son and there's still more to do. The parental controls are a bit janky.

What a time for me to wish I could play Pokemon Red+Blue on my Switch.

Fire Red + Leaf Green aren't on GBA Virtual Console yet, are they? I might be tempted to dish out for the Online Expansion Pass if so.

EDIT: Nope. Still tempted for other N64 and GBA stuff though.

I'm looking for suggestions for games for my 5 year old.

He's got super mario wonder which he is getting better at but still finds certain parts too hard.

Looking really for linear platformer games which don't require too much out of the box thinking?

Mainly to get him used to using the switch and how games work etc before he moves on to the more complicated games.

When my twins were 5 they didn’t play a load of traditional platformers - it was mostly Mario Kart, Mario Party, and a few things like that.

What they loved (and still do) was Kirby and the Forgotten Land - not really a platformer but similar DNA

When they were 6 they were playing Super Mario 3D World - what really helps there is that if you fail a level 3 times, you get given a free invincibility power-up to help you through

Kirby Star Allies would be my simplest recommendation, it's really a side scroller rather than a platformer. Rayman Legends is also a big hit with my son. It requires good execution but it's rarely hard to figure out the way forward.
